According to Microsoft's Jason Ronald.

So if you have more than one with games on it you can just exchange them without a power off. Not sure who has that many games on the go, but that is a neat feature.

On a side note, has there been a leak of the connection that PS5 will be using for their external drives? I assume it will be more than just a USB port

That’s only logical. Why would you expect the need to turn off your system for that?

not confirmed at any price.. but a 1TB SSD is kind of in those ball parks. I suspect the "approved" list of PS5 drives will be expensive too

because it is electronics and you never know what you may have to do. With a Thumb Drive you are supposed to "unmount" it on modern computers I at least expected the same with this tech

@regnaston: You're asked to unmount a USB because you could be writing to it when you unplug it.

I very much expect the same with this SSD; you should only remove it if the system isn't writing to it.

Re: PS5 ... yeah, it'll just be the USB port and, it'll likely only be for "cold-storage". You'd have to upgrade the internal drive for more "SSD" storage or, move content between the internal SDD and the "cold-storage" external HDD / SSD.

If I can use an external HDD to rotate games I am playing to the SSD then I might just do that instead. That would just be cheaper.

As long as it is clear that the system isn't writing to it.. perhaps there will be an onscreen widget to press to remove the drive to stop all data transfer on it

I thought the PS5 was allowing for external SSD to use with the system and you did not have to change it internally

Nice feature but probably not a big deal to me either way.

Yeah, afaik, there's no way an external SSD reaches the same speeds as the internal SSD over lets say USB. It's the reason why the XSX has a dedicated port / form factor for the external SSD.

At least they don't call it raw swapping.

If your system actually boots in 1 to 2 seconds then it doesn't make a difference

@2mrw: I don't think we have seen any system booting or heard how quickly they boot

I plan on getting a series S so I will need an upgrade very soon after launch I would have paid the extra for a 1TB console.

This. Not sure why anyone would think otherwise.

The fast and expensive SSDs for these systems are going to be a price pain for a little bit.

That is kinda cool, ngl. It's not like rebooting a console is a major inconvenience, but yeah, still a great idea.

@lhughey: Exactly. People sweating over a $400-500 console price tag are going to be bummed out when they quickly discover that a back up SSD of equal speeds and high storage capacity is in the $200-300 range...
