Game Pass: Lies of P benefits devs and gamers Day One!

Looks devs continue to gush over Game Pass. What say you fellow SW friends? Have you given Lies of P a whirl? It's on my backlog of games to play, but I know the game has been praised. I guess gamers come out ahead with the success of Game Pass, which is the most important thing here. But with Xbox and devs also benefitting, it's a win win all the way around.

Lies of P Dev Explains Benefits of Launching Day One With Xbox Game Pass

In a post-launch interview with Game Rant, Lies of P director Jiwon Choi details how the team benefited from launching day one on Xbox Game Pass.

Lies of P surprised the world when it was revealed to be a Soulslike game based on the classic story of Pinocchio, one complete with a seriously dark Bloodborne vibe, and it would surprise the world again whenit would launch on Xbox Game Pass a day early. It was confirmed as a day-one game long before this, but Xbox, Round8, and Neowiz coordinating to drop it a day early was a very nice touch.

However, that's far from the only benefit that Lies of P has drawn thanks to its day one inclusion on Xbox Game Pass. One constant benefit of the service, especially for any new IP, is an almost instant community. Someone who may skip on a game like Lies of P at retail value may find themselves drawn to it when it comes at the cost of their subscription. Game Pass is a serious benefit, one that game director Jiwon Choi described as "one of the best options for us to get the game into the hands of a large community of players" as a completely new IP in a recent interview with Game Rant.

The instant community is no doubt one of the biggest benefits, but it's not the only one. As Choi described, the Xbox team provided plenty of marketing support for Lies of P, and as many indie or smaller studios can contest, marketing is one of the hardest parts of the game industry. There are so many games out there that getting a gamer's time can be incredibly trying, but Xbox ran plenty of marketing campaigns to help assist on this front.

The result, Choi says, is a huge number of players.

"The Xbox team ran a wide range of marketing campaigns for Lies of P, and I cannot reveal the exact number here, but a huge number of gamers have played our game through Xbox Game Pass. I believe both parties earned a very good result from this collaboration."

Understandably, Choi couldn't reveal an exact player count for Xbox Game Pass subscribers, but it's clearly enough that Round8 and Neowiz are full steam ahead on turning this new IP into a franchise. Not too long after its release, Choi would confirm that both a Lies of P DLC and a sequel were in development. News such as this, especially a sequel, is not usually confirmed so close to release, so it's encouraging to see.

Very good. I played this day one via Game Pass and found it to be such a fantastic game. Calling it a “Souls like” almost feels like a disservice. I found it to be just as good as FromSoftware’s best work. Thank you Game Pass. 🙏

A dev with no marketing budget made some money, while MS lost some more. Nothing new or surprising.

Xbox profited from this deal, which is great news for gamers!

Gamepass is killing devs. These devs are obviously lying. Look at the leaks. Speculation confirms that it is harming developers. 😏

No such thing as profits when its GP. Epic store has a higher chance of being profitable than GP.

On a serious note, I really don't care about GP as I buy games and therefor get to choose what I play when I want to play it, not play the gaming equivalent of a lucky dip, but each to their own.

Of course they will say that receiving Xbox money. :/ Go figure.

I played the demo for a while but it did not make me want to get the full game unfortunately. I was hoping for a good Bloodborne homage, but it missed the mark for me. Given how deep I want to get into these types of games, I can't play one half heartedly and try to convince myself I am enjoying it, especially when I can easily start a new character in a game I already have and can enjoy over and over.

I wonder if the mod scene has tried to enhance this game and how successful they have been in tweaking the gameplay, enemy AI, hitboxes, etc?

Congrats to the devs and the people who enjoyed it. I hope they keep trying.

How do developers make their money off Game Pass. Say they spent $50 million to make their game? Same goes for PSN+.

There’s a few ways devs make money. With this game, the dev had their marketing budget covered. In other cases, the dev may negotiate an upfront fee from Xbox and then engagement based payouts afterward. With other indie devs, we saw Xbox cover development costs, allowing the dev to make the game better. We have yet to get a good deal breakdown from a big dev. But those that have come out in favor tend to be small indie devs or games that wouldn’t have had a marketing budget otherwise.

It’s on a case by case basis. No game is the same when they negotiate the Game Pass access.

The good news is that it’s profitable for MS and the devs and it gives gamers access to the game on Game Pass.

Lies of P was an absolutely brilliant day 1 add to the GamePass. Thank you Phil!!
