Poll Have your physical/digital preferences changed since this gen started? (59 votes)

I'm 100% physical! 14%
75% physical, 25% digital 15%
50% physical, 50% digital 8%
25% physical, 75% digital 17%
I'm 100% digital! 46%

Before this gen, I preferred physical, but bought a substantial amount of digital games. I would say I was getting closer to that 50 / 50 mark. Since this gen started, my preference for physical has gone stronger! Physical has great benefits; you can sell it, lend it, borrow it, etc. In some cases, game prices actually go up and I'm make some money (if I decide to sell). With digital, it's a sunk cost. But if there is a game I really like and think I'll play it for the long term, digital isn't a bad option at all.

How about you, SW? Have your physical/digital preferences changed since this gen started?

I don’t know if my preferences have really changed that much. I still prefer physical but it’s not like I was ever that set against getting games digitally before. If I can walk into a local store and pickup a physical version of a game then in all likelihood that’ll be the option I’ll go for. For me it’s not about be able to sell my games, it’s just that I prefer to have a physical collection of them. I guess I would say that I’m 75% in favour of getting the game physical.

Nope. Still 100% digital, especially ever since I got fiber internet.

It's just so convenient, and no more plastic boxes taking up space in my house.

Noooope. Still 100% digital.

Physical has great benefits; - it doesn't

you can sell it, - you wont

lend it, - you wont get it back

borrow it, - your friends are all digital and have nothing to lend

etc. In some cases, game prices actually go up - it doesn't matter

and I'm make some money - because you wont

(if I decide to sell). - (because you wont)

I'm just kidding lol, you do you! Optical drives suck tho. They should really switch to flash carts like Nintendo. More faster, more quieter, more reliable hardware.

Yes. Last gen I was mostly physical. This gen I'm digital with Sony and Microsoft, and physical with Nintendo.

Surprised by the 32% digital; given how vocal people are about how they like to "own" their games and trade them in, I thought it'd be less. But then again that might just be vocal minority.

Last gen, I was maybe 15% physical and 85% digital.

Now, I'm all 100% Digital. As a minimalist gamer (I try to be), discs are simply just clutter to me. It's just far too convenient to buy games digitally, especially when there's discounts or flash sales at the PS Store. However, I still collect vinyl because they're cool and sound better.

I have no faith in Sony's B/C feature for the PS5 Disc, so I'm aiming to get the PS5 Digital Edition, it's cheaper yet the same power. Although I have about 40+ physical PS4 games, I don't intend on using them on PS5. I always keep my consoles in excellent condition, so if I wanna play PS4 games I simply play them on my Pro, the way they were meant to be played.

Last gen I started 100% physical but by the time the gen ended I was 100% digital. So this gen I'm starting 100% digital from the start. Also now with the amazing quick resume feature on Xbox consoles for me digital is the way to go. Plus all the sales it is far cheaper.

I don't have a PS5 and don't plan on it anytime soon. I was all digital on Xbox last gen, so keeping with that tradition. Only games I get physical are Switch, because I am well aware of their shitty digital rights.

Over a whole generation, you can save thousands from reselling your games, especially with Nintendo that doesn't drop prices of their games, which makes it so used copies are permanently expensive and now the $70 PS5 games as well. How is this not a good reason?

I've probably been about 50-50 this gen so far, but that's mainly because upgrades and certain PS5 games on other platforms don't have physical options in many cases.

Digital on PC.
Mostly physical on Switch, digital for indie games.

So I guess that's like 85% digital.

Digital 100%. Not a fan of needless clutter. That and I realize the older I get, the more I realize that stuff is just stuff. I don't need the clutter and I cannot take it with me when I go. I am a natural minimalist, so digital works great for me.

Last gen I bought zero physical games for the pc and PlayStation, but do have a few physics games for the switch since Nintendo’s store is utter crap and I can usually get the games cheaper at my local electronic store! Also with the tiny hard drive the swift have, it makes sense to get the game physical!

All physical for my console gaming, especially since the likes of Nintendo love to pull anti-consumer stunts like locking digital games to individual consoles. I do relatively little console gaming though so basically all PC gaming is digital now. I used to spring for the physical copies of the Kickstarter games I backed but ended up never opening them anyway.

Recently reinstalled Neverwinter Nights 2 out of nostalgia (and good lord I had forgetter how bad that camera was) and messing with the multitude of disks certainly felt archaic; don’t miss that at all.

At the start of PS4/Xbox One, I went fully digital gaming (besides for Wii U/Switch) and my stance hasn't change since. "I'm 100% digital" and I'm staying digital despite I'm on PC, I have always buy digital games on consoles (but few exception) and I don't regret it.

Back in the days, I was a physical buyer.

I don't like having physical copies so GamePass has been perfect for me. I play a game till I don't care to play anymore, then I uninstall and play something else. I don't have to bother selling anything and don't have any gamer clutter on my shelves.

Years ago I scoffed at digital unless it was necessary. Now the only time I buy physical is if it’s not available digitally or it’s a lot cheaper. For example, I recently bought Left4Dead 1&2 and Silent Hill Homecoming and Downpour.

I just can’t be bothered to run to the game store or wait for shipping. I’ve found myself doing this a lot now with Uber Eats, Door Dash, Instacart.

I don't have any current gen consoles, so it has had zero effect on how I purchase games. There's just not really anything that I'm dying to play, so it doesn't matter if it's digital or physical...I'm probably not going to buy it.

Most games aren't worth owning.

I have zero interest in physical games. Happened last gen when I got more into PC gaming.

Optical drives are so ancient and slow, no one even uses them on the PC any more. Teh "state of the art console" with optical drives. :-(
