If they had cut the price a year or two ago, maybe. Now, no. Remember, the PSP and Wii kept the PS2 alive well into gen 7 due to easy ports between the three systems.

The PS5 is gonna be in such short supply that the PS4 Pro might get a bit of a sales surge. Especially if the majority of title are cross-platform. I know I would buy another Pro if the price was right. Hell, look at the Xbox team right now. I’m fighting myself from buying a 4th X because they’re $299 right now. That price is nuts

Judging by the latest numbers, it's close to 110 million or surpassed it. With the coronavirus thing and the PS5 around the corner - if it's backwards compatible, its chances if it had any are probably lost. It still has some legs to get past 140 million, though. Still, it'll end up being - wait, already is the second best-selling home console of all time so that's quite the achievement. I say it'll get close, real close, but not surpass.

That X really is tempting. @Conan planted the idea in my head to get one so I can play Ninja Gaiden at 4K 60fps lol.

Is it just me or is selling such underpowered system for $300-400 after all these years is completely ridiculous? How is it that a 2013 console with a Jag cpu still $300USD in 2020? It doesn't even make any sense to me.

Perhaps. It would be a good point of entry for folks that just want to play F2P games like Fortnite, Warzone etc.

Here in the UK the X was £260 2 weeks ago and I didn't pull the trigger. Still only £299 for a 6 teraflop machine is urging me to get it. I don't think ps4 will reach PS2 numbers without a price cut.

Make sure to remove the boost of higher population and saturation that the PS2 didn't have before using the fallacy of total sales to justify being stuck with one closed system

Well, PS2 had the DRE problem and a lot of people bought new ones because it had a ton of great games.

Maybe Sony should release a special DRE patch to a few million launch PS4s lol

@djoffer: At the very beginning yes, but it wasn't the cheapest DVD player its whole life. Don't get me wrong, that definitely helped it hit 155 million. I don't think the ps4 will hit that number, but if it gets a big price cut I think it could get close.

I dunno why anyone this late in the game would buy a PS4 when PS5 is only months till launch and likely a given it will include PS4 BC right outta the box.

That's what I've been saying for a while, I can't believe the PS4 Slim isn't $199. I feel like in generations past, the $199 was the price point a lot of people were waiting for to dive into a console. Especially if there's a bundle with a pack in game or 2.

I think if Sony would do that the PS4 could get a last second boost in terms of sales. As much as the PS2? Probably not, but it could get damn close.

I think whether Sony keeps making them after PS5 launches might make it happen, but if nobody buys it if PS5 BC gives less reason for buying one then maybe it won't happen.

Then again, maybe social distancing might push hardware sales next few months too.

@SecretPolice: Price mostly. The ps5 is probably going to be $500, the ps4 on the other hand is probably going to have a big price drop around black Friday and the holidays and that way lower price and huge backlog of games will keep the ps4 sales going strong.
