What game(s) have the best and most fun weapons (melee, guns, items etc) ?

Lol, one of the rare times GameSpot publishes an interesting video. This got me thinking tho, what game(s) have the best weapons (melee,gun,items etc)? On the realistic side, I think Rainbow Six Siege has a pretty good array of guns. On the fantasy side, Insomniac's Ratchet and Clank games usually have fun guns to use. Bayonetta also comes to mind. Has fun weapons overall to experiment with. Same with DMC V. How about you, SW?

Well just off the top of my head the Monster Hunter games spring to mind. They have a whole bunch of cool looking weapons and a number of the weapon can be quite fun to use.

Ratchet and Clank has some interesting and nonsensical weapons. I also recalled the weapons in Resistance also being pretty cool. Unreal Tournament had several novel weapons the pulse rifle and gloop gun. Also the ability to telefrag was equally awesome. Add Prey and Dishonored series to the list of games with fun weapons.

Agreement with Pedro on this one. I'll also add in the Tomb Raider reboot's bow. It was so satisfying shooting that thing.

Everyone's going to say the Gravity Gun from Half-Life 2 is the best weapon...and I can see why. But Pedro's answer is right however that Ratchet & Clank has cool weapons.

Yeah, I also really dig many of the weapons in the following game franchises as well:

- Ratchet & Clank

- Ninja Gaiden

- Bayonetta

- Devil May Cry

- Souls games

They were nothing extravagant but I always enjoyed the design, feel, and effects of the guns in FEAR. They were so well implemented.

The shotgun was beefy, casting pellets out in a good spread that looked simply glorious in slo-mo. The bolt-thrower gun was amazing, and using it to surgically nail enemies into the wall was satisfying as hell. Even explosives were great, creating distortion bubbles in slo-mo right before turning enemies into exploding sacks of red jelly and meat.

My inner Star Wars fan LOVES what Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series did.

The machine guns used in the original Contra game that was released on the arcades and the NES during the late 1980s. I really enjoyed blasting aliens using these weapons, as well as using the secret 30 lives code to finish the game.

R&C have hillarious weapons at least! Also MDK 2 was pretty awesome in the weapons department ( and everywhere else)!

I'm gonna have to go with the Monado from Xenoblade Chronicles.

I like it when they make a character out of the weapon. They did this with Transistor as well.

Honestly though, the Gravity Gun from Half Life 2 is probably one of the most memorable and iconic weapons in a video game. The simple crowbar turned out to be so iconic as well.

Probably have to go with the water, noise maker, moss, gas fire arrow.

The weapons are interesting as they are limited choice enviroment manipulaters as oppossed to offensive weapons.

Their was also a really neat mode for Oblivion called "Theives arsenel" i.e. Theif that has grease arrows that would cause enemies to slip and fall.

Another weapon (per say) is Shadow Tactics/Desperados 3 ability to distract men with tiddys in conjunction with attacks or simple stealth.

Doesn't work on strong willed men or woman.

Everything from the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series - concussion rifle, rail detonator, lightsaber, etc.

@jaydan: Yeah the twist regarding the Monado towards the end was also great. Usually i am good at seeing twists in stories (they are usually pretty obvious) but xenoblade did a good job of hiding them.

Monster hunter is an obvious one. The type of weapon you use has a huge effect on the way you play the game and the role you take in the fight. Some of them are also bonkers. Also it does a great job of making a weapon upgrade feel like a proper upgrade (most of the time...er World got a bit lazy in places :S).

The Last of Us: Multiplayer. Hands down one of the greatest multiplayer ever. Third-person shooters FTW

Anyway, Half Life 2 definitely comes to mind (the gravity gun and rocket launcher especially). And definitely agree with Insomniac games like Ratchet and Sunset Overdrive.

No, not gunplay by itself, but a combination of melee into gunplay. No games do it better. If we're talking about gunplay alone, i would go with Escape From Tarkov or Metro Exodus.

Killing Floor 2 has some great options. A mix of more serious weapons with some ridiculous ones added in like the Microwave gun

Borderlands comes to mind.

I like the way the weapons feel in RDR2, the looks, sounds, and it's nice when a game respects a weapon and not nerf the firepower. I love Halo but goddamn I hate how the shotgun is only useful at melee range, at least if that will be the case, make is like a gnasher from Gears of War, turn enemies into meat giblets.

Halo CE weapons (minus the needler) are still some of the best around. The sniper rifle is great, and the shotgun is decent at midrange and devastating at close range. The plasma pistol and rifle both slow the speed and turning capability of player, which generally leads to a satisfying crack to the back of their skull. Timing a well placed rocket on a fleeing warthog that's escaping with your flag is one of the most rewarding moments in gaming. And the king, the pistol is almost perfect. It's deadly at almost any range, it can dole out 3-shot kills if you can master the timing, and in most maps everyone starts with it, so it's the defacto equilizer of the game. The weapons are punchy, balanced and kick ass.

Bullseye - Resistance (not that effective, but cool)

As far as fun weapons go, I think there needs to be a mentioning of Quake's Grenade Launcher. Just hearing it bounce before exploding is one of my favourite moments in gaming in the past few decades.

Dunno if i'm allowed to mention mods, but I feel like I should talk about the detachable magazine upgrade for the pump action shotgun in GZDOOM's Project Brutality. Real fun to destroy the tougher non-boss demons with the Dragon's Breath shells.

Speaking of KF2, it's probably got one of the best melee systems in a first person shooter but if i'm to pick a favourite weapon, i'd go for the Hemoclobber. Balancing issues aside, there's something satisfying in using an explosive nail bat to solve your problems.

Easily the Dead Rising series. So many hilarious weapons.

I also love the weapons in the Far Cry series, especially the German machine gun in Far Cry 4. Kick ass.

I should also mention legendary Double Dragon (arcade). For its time it was amazing to use a whip, a baseball bat or an oil drum.
