Earlier today, we reported that a member of Destiny's community was offered a job as a Community Manager at Bungie for the game. For this Reddit user, his hobby and passion turned into a full-time job. Would you ever want to stop what you're doing for a living and join the games industry?

From what I've read it looks to be one of the worst tech industries to work in so no.

Indirectly, yes. I'd like to work as a game writer, but that’s not a full-time job.

Damn right I would. I'd make 3 smash hit indies followed by a critically acclaimed licensed game, then a triple-A epic that turns into a beloved trilogy. After that, my plans are a little more nebulous.

I've wanted to make video games since 2008; since I was 11. Though, since 2007, I've been playing a user-generated gaming platform known as ROBLOX, which lets you build maps part by part (like LEGO, but more complex), and then use LUA to script functions, basically making whatever you want. Over the years though I've never gotten myself to start making games on it. It's so much easier to just play the game. It's like my most difficult challenge: to use the thing that's sitting in front of me, free to use. Heh.

As I got older (24 now) I gradually started playing less games and got more into making them.

The competition is a killer, but I'm well on my way!

Work 70 hour weeks to meet deadlines only to have your game be released broken because it was rushed? Yeah no thanks.

In the past, I was not interested to make games or be in the gaming industrie, now I'm more than interested; It's almost my dream job; Still I prefer my current job over gaming developing but if I was not force in politics, I'd do game developer for sure.

From age 10 till about 25 I wanted nothing more (career wise) than to work in the gaming industry. The problem was that the industry is in upheaval. Studios closing all the time, even the semi successful ones closed by their parent company. It became to unstable for me so I looked elsewhere when expanding on my degree.

however it is not that easy, even when you study something related to it

I said yes but it's kind of a tentative yes. I'd love to make game music or write and design games. Don't much want to be a game programmer. Not sure how I'd realistically even get started on any of these things.

Topical: current Humble Bundle is a bunch of game making tools.

Of course, money would be good, but it's not even about the money. Most of us as gamers enjoy the fantasy worlds not for joy and amusement but by the world we create in them which gives us hope forvthe lives we currently lead.

I enjoy making games. Hopefully in not too long I'll make something I see as high enough quality to ask money for, but at the moment I enjoy it as just a learning experience and hobby.

Honestly, no...well, maybe as a side job! I'm happy with the job I have now, the pay is decent, I got great benefits, and job security!

But I also have a music recording studio, so I wouldn't mind collaborating with a developer to do a music score or soundtrack from time to time.

Anything dealing with the entertainment industry is risky, but hat's off to those who would make that their dream.

I feel as if 90% of those who think they want to make games for a living have no idea what it's actually like. If they did, most would reconsider and those who truly are passionate and talented would not be "wishing" and instead "doing". And what exactly does it mean to "make games"? There are also dozens of different roles to play in the development of a game. There are writers, producers, publishers, programmers, artists, animators, the list goes on.

I voted no because of one very specific reason. The way the question was worded. If you ask me if I want to make games for a living, my answer would be yes, but instead, you asked if I would want to join the industry. **** THE INDUSTRY. I would so much rather (and in time, will) make indie games. I would not want to spend years of my life working on something so that some fucking corporate CEO can make a shit ton of money off of my work, while I get paid some shitty salary. **** that noise. I refuse to work a corporate job in ANY OTHER FIELD, why would games be any kind of exception? Especially given how easy it is to make a good game without them.

I`d take a sucurity job for some good gaming company, i have zero knowledge about programming, coding & stuff like that - if i did then yes, i`d try the job & see how it goes. Better then sitting home doing nothing.

i wouldnt like to work in the games industry no. its brutal..it has one of the highest burn out rates in the entire computing sector for a reason.

i will maybe tinker with making games on the side as a hobby if i ever get bored of playing them. i have a few ideas that would be doable by 1-2 people. they may work...they may not. just have to....yaknow...gather the will to actually learn how to do it :P.

I used to want to make games, then I took programming classes in high school and college. It is hard, like learning a foreign language and very boring imo, not to mention how horrible the industry is to work in from what I've read. I think if I was a reviewer or tester I wouldn't enjoy gaming as much, so no there. However, designer would be fun perhaps, but it would be hard to get in without programming knowledge I think

No, I prefer to play games.

A friend of mine makes games (he used to work for S2 Games and was lead programmer on Heroes of Newerth), and he barely has time to play games anymore.

No.

I'd rather not get death threats and have the internet constantly screaming at my ear for how much of a bad person I am because I chose to cut my salary as a software engineer/UX developer by working in the games industry instead of the finance/science/manufacturing industry.

Hell Yesss it's one of those jobs that I would actually want to go too, the end result would be so rewarding and you get to play the game early. But honestly you don't see creators playing their own games because I can imagine the way they see it compared to the gamers, It just wouldn't be the same.

I can say I'm disappointed in the people of Victoria, Australia. Fore shame of those that want to play games and yet they carry on like two-bob watch about how they can make a better game. At least I'm studying a diploma of Digital and Interactive Gaming
