Need help finding a game

So I've been thinking about this game I played when I was a kid... I don't remember a lot about it and I can't remember what it was called, so I figured I'd try ask here.

We used to play this game on Playstation when I was young... The opening sequence was this really young kid falling off a train or something into the woods and they get found by this old man... The game starts off a few years later when the kid is a little older and you help the old guy with tasks around his cabin in the woods and eventually you set off on adventures.

You'd bump into enemies and it had that playstyle where you take turns doing damage to each other etc.

There was this game I used to play where you start out, i think, on a ship, and you find this sword chained to a wall and take it and the sword talks to you during the game. I think it was for PS1, but it could be nes-ps1. It was a rpg. ive been trying to figure out/remember the name forever, if anyone could help that would be amazing
