In regards to total revenue, at least. Here's the link.

Apparently, this comes from California District Court release of documents from the FTC v MS case. The slide show presentation states "Our ambition is to reach industry leadership, as defined by global revenue, by 2030. This implies doubling our total revenue during that timeframe"

According to the doc, Sony is the leader with $24,410; MS is 2nd with $15,563; and Nintendo is 3rd with $12,623 in revenue (in millions) - or, Sony 44%, MS 29%, and Nintendo 27%.

Another interesting note is that the "big 3" only make up 29% of the global game market.

Nadella outlined the growth vectors for Xbox gaming. These include continued expansion of Xbox Game Pass to capture more of the PC market as well as efforts to "build out" xCloud in an attempt to bring Xbox Game Pass to the mobile market.

Thoughts, SW? Is it possible for MS to overtake Sony in 6 years?

It is absolutely possible.... Anyone saying different isn't paying attention or has been blinded by the comfort of their favorite corporate suits. Gaming is in flux... Shake ups everywhere.... Studios, ownership of ip, trends and most of all, the way we game.... All in flux. If any of the big three forge a path forward by being first to market with big games and big changes that work for gamers on a large scale they could all capture the market. Microsoft alone has games like call of duty that will create a ton of revenue for Microsoft out of the pockets of Playstation gamers.... That alone is a signifying element of the change on the horizon.

Make no mistake though... Microsoft is capable of botching it by not leading with compelling experiences out of their studios. I do not believe they can gain an advantage without amazing games coming out of their owned studios.

They could but, it'll take a heck of a lot more than $32B in revenue. Perhaps they mean doubling their revenue *post* ABK?

PlayStation is on track to hit like $29B *this* fiscal year.

In was trying to check if this was a plan, or merely a mission, because previously this distinction has been very important with Microsoft. They say it's an "ambition." I'm wondering if this is synonymous with plan or mission for them, or if it's some third thing...

By more consolidation, probably.

But as far as sales go? Good luck with that, MS...

@TheEroica: I vote botching it. But, it would nice to see MS be around the same level as Sony by 2030 - each bringing in around the same revenue, say +- 5%

It is very telling that the ambition from Microsoft is to be the leader in revenue rather than be the leader in game quality or imagination. It tells you everything about the company and where the industry is heading. It is also a reason why more gamers are becoming more excited by indie games than the AAA sector.

The sad thing is that some people will see this horrible ambition as something to cheer and get behind. Sad times.

@Pedro: That is the one thing that will not happen given their track record of the more and more disappointing Halo and the mediocrities from Bethesda.

Certainly possible if they can get on track with the 4-5 releases a year that they are aiming for.

Owning Activision and King certainly makes this easier, especially considering Epic recently won against Epic and has to open the Play Store up for other stores.

I get that people dont like change and will be upset about this, but its certainly time for a change in leadership in gaming.

Im not saying MS will be better than Sony, its just that Sony has grown to be extremely anticompetitive in the last decade attempting to maintain their dominance and they dont like being challenged.

If Nintendo ever decided to really invest in hardware and 3rd parties, they'd crush MS and Sony with ease.

@navyguy21: Any antipathy against Microsoft has nothing to do with Sony and their flaws - of which there are many - but the fact that Microsoft are more interested in money than quality. It is is the way of things these days - just look at Disney - but it doesn't have to be liked.

Unfortunately some people on here cannot take valid criticism of MS and their ambitions.

Reverence? Don't be silly. It is as if you are intentionally ignoring the many talented developers who are working for MS. Two of the games you listed are multiplatform games. Pretending that MS has no studios that can make great games is well, silly.

I’m sure that’s their goal. But look at their current results. Xbox is spending billions and billions for 1%-3% growth in revenue YOY. PlayStation is topping that through conventional means. PlayStation is increasing its marketshare lead and has better margins as well. Xbox has made their software and services available to more than a hundred million additional consumers who don’t need to buy anything but a subscription. And their growth has been minimal. The market trends aren’t in Xbox’s favor.

Potential is nothing without results. Xbox has been operating on potential for long enough.

I didn’t say Xbox is or should leave gaming. They just won’t be the industry leader by 2030 with their current trajectory. They are barely beating their year over year numbers while PS is blowing away what was already industry leading performance. The gap is widening, not closing. Not sure how we get to this “Xbox in the industry leader” scenario.

Epic didn't win sh*t. It was Apple that actually won the case. The reason Apple and Google are allowing other stores is because of EU regulation which designated them as gate keepers. Still remains to be seen if they allow the other stores only in EU or all over the world.

The case was decided just yesterday in the Epic v Google case.

SLINKY

This is the verdict MS referenced in the FTC/CMA cases when they talked about wanting to open a MS storefront. That case has now been decided, which will likely affect the Apple Store as well.

This is the mindset that I was referencing with my post.

Change is difficult, and people had the EXACT same argument when Netflix started sending out DVDs for free, said the same thing when they shifted to all digital.

It took them 6 years and billions in losses to reach ONE million subscribers. It wasnt until 2007 when they went to streaming (which people said would kill the company) and in 2009 when they started producing original content did Netflix really take off.

Now, they have 248m paid subscribers.

Xbox is on a faster trajectory than Netflix and seems that they have learned the lessons of their mistakes.

MS is trying to be the Netflix of gaming and they are really investing in that as you mentioned in your post. Not everyone will understand, not everyone will like it. People are used to the traditional gaming console market and cant understand how the math works outside of that.

Truth is, gaming has been shifting for a decade (yes, im old). The traditional (Sony) model isnt sustainable, which is why they are investing in PC and Live Service games. Sure, they are selling consoles 1.7x-2x that of MS, but their REVENUE is shrinking. They make awesome games, but they also invest 200m to make those games amazing. That isnt sustainable, even if they sell 10m units. Why? Time. Those games take 5yrs to make and dont come out regularly enough to sustain the business. They are/were relying (their own words) on COD and other 3rd party revenues (paid exclusives) to subsidize their first party. They wont have all of that now that MS owns Activision.

Where are they going to get the money to subsidize the first party? More low cost remakes? Remasters? Lower game budgets? More GaaS games?

Money has to come from somewhere.

Do i like what MS is doing? No because I dont like my games tied to a subscription. But I seem to be in the minority as people keep subscribing to PSN and Game Pass and buying digital.

They market is changing, gamers just live in their own bubbles and havent caught up yet

A one-time transaction isn't going to get them to where they want to be.

Growth is what will ultimately determine whether or not the gap shrinks or widens.

No! but it would factually increase their revenue by default. This is not a complicated thing.

@navyguy21: You REALLY don’t want to use Netflix as an example. Their numbers were propped up by outside funding for many years. Once they went fully financially independent, we’ve seen password sharing crackdowns, spending cuts, price hikes and ad plans.

And like you said, Netflix has 240+ million subscribers. Most of their plans cost more than Game Pass subscriptions. And Netflix brings in $8.5 billion in revenue from 240+ million subscribers. Game Pass has what, 30 million subscribers? And games are much more expensive to produce than Netflix shows. Some of which will likely be exclusively released in theaters at first in the near future.

They are barely beating their year over year numbers while PS is blowing away what was already industry leading performance. The gap is widening, not closing. Not sure how we get to this “Xbox in the industry leader” scenario.

MS revenue will include Activision/Blizzard and you believe that the revenue gap is going to widen?🤔

They are still giving up 30% to PlayStation and PC storefronts where the games sell better. COD sales are down substantially too… And when/If Xbox puts those games on Game Pass, it could be a wash…

@TheEroica: I vote botching it. But, it would nice to see MS be around the same level as Sony by 2030 - each bringing in around the same revenue, say +- 5%

Botching it is certainly only a bad CEO away.... I think Phil has done good to grab the properties they want to develop under their studios umbrella. Certainly, it can be said that Microsoft can make as many franchises as Sony exclusive to their platforms.... But are those games genre defining experiences? Or shovelware... 👎

If Microsoft is gonna beat sonys anti consumer exclusives, dreadful bottleneck on gaming it's gonna be because Microsoft put pressure on them with good games....

Bu.. bu. but I thought that they were leaving gaming in 2027? I feel my concern dissipating. Whew.

Me too, I must meditate and clear my mind.
