Do you tell people that you're a gamer?

I believe that gaming has become more socially acceptable in our society, but there may be some persons who are insecure about the fact that they are a gamer. I'm interested to know: do you openly acknowledge the fact that you are a gamer? (outside of the internet)

I don't advertise it, but will talk about it if it comes up in conversation.

I've told some people at work with whom I'm friends with that I like a bit of gaming and I'm perhaps a bit of a 'tech nerd'. I mean built my own gaming PCs so....

But also have other hobbies as well. Gaming isn't quite as stereotyped as it used to be.

I tell it only to those who aren't into games like my wife.

I only do with other people that are into gaming, I don’t really bring it up to other people on my own.

I always tell someone I'm a PC gamer if they ask or if the conversation asks like what's my favorite hobby or something like that, that's when I'll tell'em I play video games all the time.

Usually just tell my friends what games I play. Discussing our preferences, having general conversations about it, if they want to team up or play against being the norm.

I'm not defined by gatekeeping taglines like "gamer" "hardcore" or "casual"; and never been a fan of them.

I don't think it was ever socially unacceptable. It's something I've done to do something in the house. With what video games have become now a days it's on another level. I always viewed it as another thing in the house to do and a good way to get with friends.

@Alexander2cents: same.

It causes a discussion I’m not willing to participate in.

Only if they first mention they are in to gaming. I am paranoid, it will make me look inmature otherwise.

Yeah.

I used to hide it because people often frown upon it, like it's something for children or childish or a waste.

But, idunno...it's what I do to relax, and I'd rather game than watch TV for hours which is, for some reason, more socially acceptable.

I look forward to the day where instead of casually asking "So what shows are you watching?" we ask eachother "So what games are you playing?" lol.

Anyway, I don't hide it anymore, it's nothing to be ashamed of. If people want to give me shit for playing a game that's essentially a NASA sim and is teaching me about delta V, apoapsis and periapsis and orbital trajectories and physics, well, shame on them.

I kind of assume most people are gamers, it seems to come up naturally and nobody has to advertise it. Maybe it just comes with the work I do and the people I already know who know other gamers.

@mrbojangles25: people around me don’t game. At all. So it would take a while to explain the subject.

Yeah that's how I feel around my family. Dad and sister borderline disapprove, mom humors me and will sometimes ask but about ten seconds into explaining it she looks disinterested haha.

It's a shame because I have to listen to them drone on about whatever "Nordic crime thriller" they're watching 😋

I'm kidding of course, I love them very much and we have a lot in common...just not gaming.

Well if you believe the recent surveys more people game now than don't, and that's REALLY going to change as the absolutely massive population of boomers starts to die off (sorry I know that sounds callous, I don't mean it like that).

I often wonder what I will be like when I'm 80. LAN parties in the old folk's home?! I hope so!

@mrbojangles25: it really depends on your age and circle of friends.

In my circle of friends, nobody games.

People are either fully devoted to work, academia or raising kids.

Their idea of fun is always social. Either eating with friends, playing sports or kids activities.

Maybe it has to do with me not living in a developed country. It feels like here, If you want to do well, you can't really afford to use time for gaming.

I think movies and (short) tv shows fit better in to people schedules because they take less time and you can watch them together with other people.

I don't go around calling myself a gamer but if it comes up in conversation I do mention that I play video games.

Even old people play on mobiles and everything nowadays.

Actually, no one know this fact. Sometimes when I go for to get new gaming keyboard, mouse or game, when they wanna know about me. But I really don't tell any one that i am a gamer since childhood.

Honeslty most people play games, so it's way easier in casual conversation to ask what games people play

I don’t like to, personally. People that don’t play video games don’t understand what it’s about.

Would have to find somebody who enjoys retro gaming as I do ,it would be a bit difficult see someone like from Gen z who knows knows what Millipede let alone expect what developer they were made by
