Undoubtedly this question has been asked numerous times. But good to keep on asking it I guess.

I haven't played a ton of Mario games and finished them, but there's been some fond memories along the way.

Me and my grandma used to play Super Mario Bros. 3 on the SNES back when I was younger. I also remember my cousin's playing a lot of Luigi's Mansion and Mario Sunshine back when they were first released too.

I wish I was able to play Super Mario 64 back when I was a kid. But I was more into Spyro and Playstation.

If I had to pick a favourite from what I've played and finished...(Super Mario Bros Wii & Odyssey.

It'd have to be Oddyssey. The game did so many things right.

(Huge fan of Mario Kart Wii and 8 too...play online constantly.)

I've always preferred the 3D Mario games, and have a massive soft spot for Mario Sunshine. But I think overall my favourite is actually Mario Odyssey. That game is damn-near perfect to me.

But admittedly, I haven't played them all. I also really loved Galaxy (first one, never played 2).

Cue the hate, but don't really get the hype with Mario...

That being said, I loved Super Mario Bros 2 on the GameBoy.

Didn't figure out the glitches and secrets in Mario 64 until later in life. A game I can always go back to that still feels fresh

Super Mario World SNES as it was my first ever, ever playing a Mario game and it was an introduction to Mario series on the SNES and not only that, SNES came with that game as a nice gift inside the box when my parents got it for me.

That said, in this order:

  1. Super Mario World SNES
  2. Mario 64 N64
  3. Super Mario: Odyssey

Edit: I'll also include 3 side Mario games that aren't part of the main Mario game series:

  1. Mario Party 3
  2. Mario Tennis
  3. Luigi's Mansion (Not sure about this, but it is part of Mario right)

Do you see that star in the middle? Pointless!
Do you see that star in the middle? Pointless!

Super Mario World (SNES): To me, there is NO OTHER Mario game which can compare to this priceless gem. Just looking at the photo (right) makes me want to go plug in my SNES and play it right now! There is an excitement you receive when completing the different sections of the game. There are secret levels, which allow you to unlock different colored blocks which can alter how you play the game. Let's not forget to mention STAR WORLD! Granted, I can play this game and remember mostly everything, but it still brings back happy memories from my childhood when it was first released with the SNES. A great topic choice for discussion. Thank you for the nostalgia!

I only played. Through it all again about 2-3 years ago,, completed every stage something I never achieved in my childhood could never finish star road.

Yep, as I said above. Super Mario World was my first ever Mario game when I was still new to SNES as my first ever gaming console of all times. Everything you said it perfectly, Nintendo at there time did almost everything they can throw at it. And man, the Star World was such bright colors, I love that stage. Every stages was so amazing, it's hard to say which was my favorite. I admit, the Ghost House stages really scared me as a young kid, but that Ghost Ship stage took me by surprise lol.

Also, own SNES Classic, I haven't started replaying Super Mario World just yet.

The castle leads DIRECTLY to Bowser. Who knew!?
The castle leads DIRECTLY to Bowser. Who knew!?

It's ironic to me you mentioned not being able to complete every stage until a few years ago. I will admit I had NO idea how to get to the specific castle (to the right) as a kid. Unfortunately, none of my friends at the time had any idea how to reach it either. I will further admit the ONLY reason I was able to figure it out a couple of years ago was due to Google. I tried. I promise you I tried! Ha! Either way, I was finally able to figure it out (No thanks to Google!) and I played a level for the first time.

Don't go through the last star!!!
Don't go through the last star!!!

To focus on your response about the Star Road. The one thing I did not like about it was how everyone turned into a pumpkin; at least what I thought looked like a pumpkin. This is only due to the last star on Star Road! Don't go through that Star! There is no turning back!

Super Mario 64.

It was my first mario game, and I just loved it (despite the issues with camera). And I still play it.

Mario Sunshine would also be really great if it did not have that horrible paint gun thingy...

Mario Galaxy felt great at beginning, but it got so repetitive real soon...

Old 2D marios are ok, but never really fell in love with them.

For me it's super mario advanced 3. I think it's because it's the first super mario game that I really like and have spent a lot of time grinding it back in my childhood! It brings back goooooooood memories!

@omegamaster: Yeah Mario Kart Wii is great fun. Very different from 8. 8 is less competitive imo.

I think MKWii is more strategic where as with 8 you don’t have the freedom to create your own shortcuts and what not.

@speeny: I have never played Mario Kart 8. Watched the gameplay and didn't look as competitive to the Wii. I own Mario Kart 3DS and didn't like the idea of karts carrying a kite.

Well, thanks for letting me know. At one point I was an inch close to buying the Switch just for Mario Kart 8.

@omegamaster: I prefer the maps on MK Wii honestly. I felt as if the maps on Mario Kart 7 were much more creative than 8 too. (Like Rainbow Road...landing on the moon...and I really liked the ice track and Wario’s Ship I believe it’s called.

I’m expecting big things for MK9 though. Not sure if i’ll get into MK Tour next year or not.

Yeah, good summary. Sunshine was definitely flawed (and I know some people who absolutely hate it), but for me it just had an x-factor. Like you said, the things it got right were awesome & there were little moments in that game that just put a massive smile on my face.

And it kinda felt like going on a Summer holiday. If they remastered this for Switch, I'd be buying a Switch immediately!
