Not that I care about celebrity bullshit but exceptions exists and this is pretty great.

For those that are not aware, Will Smith slapped Chris Rock. Footage below:

So basically Chris Rock made fun of Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith, Jada's husband, slapped him then yelled at him.

Of course, the responses have been great.

"Toxic masculinity at its worst"

"He could have killed him"

And so on and so forth. Anyway, what do you guys think.

Me personally I think Will Smith made a pretty big mistake, that's just not something you do in normal life, much less to a fellow celebrity in front of millions of people. Apparently Jada suffers from alopecia which made the joke about GI Jane, a movie in which Demi Moore shaves her head, maybe a bit too close to home. But FFS it was a bald joke, c'mon.

Will definitely crossed the line there. Ok the joke was in bad taste but you don't just smack someone and then shout the f-word on live television. He could have responded in a calm demeanor and ask Rock to apologize. Instead of a hero he became a perpetrator though.

Will sure did save the Oscars this time around lol.

All jest aside. I had more sympathy for Chris Rock until I realized his joke was referencing Jada's hair loss from alopecia. Now, did that warrant being struck by the hand, especially on television? Of course not, but Rock's joke here was kind of low. So I'll give this to Will's reaction and say that warrant a slap in the face.

Disappointed with Will's actions there. Okay, Chris Rock's joke had gone wrong, but Will didn't need to smack and swear at Chris on LIVE television! Will Smith is one of the most influential people out there and sadly he's made a mess of himself.

The other day I was going to buy Will Smith's biography 'Will', but now that won't happen for a while.

What Chris Rock should have said was "Ya know, I totally deserved that. Sometimes my mouth moves so fast up here that my brain can't keep up! I apologize. Moving right along..."

But he didn't and he deserved to look like the fool he is on live TV.

I know what you mean, but not everyone can take a joke when it's had an impact on Jada, and Will's family.

But let's not forget when Chris Rock made that joke, Will originally laughed at the joke before he attacked Chris :o

Crazy!

The joke was way below the belt….but Smith got his reaction all wrong and will end up being cancelled. He could have just called Rock out on making jokes about his wife, which would have been more effective than slapping him. Have to say Rock handled the slap pretty well though.

@sealionact: Of course he did. He stepped up when he called out Will's wife. Will stepped DOWN, career wise to correct Rock. Rock will benefit while Will *might* suffer a small amount of back lash.

@davillain: yeah he sure saved it, though I can't say in a good way. It's the first time I cared about the Oscar's in years.

Chris Rock took it like a champ, though it was a bitch slap, it still looked painful. But now he's got a new bit for his show for years to come.

The Oscars had another all time ratings low, this was done as a desperate attempt to get people talking about the show. Hopefully people realize this and the Oscars continue to go downhill.

The funny and sad thing is: nobody is even talking about the awards or the wins. It just goes to show nobody gives a shit about the purpose these ceremonies anymore. Just like nobody gives a shit about the Golden Globes, but everyone sure as hell loves it when Ricky Gervais roasts all of Hollywood and calls them friends with Epstein.

Making celebrities look bad is all the rage these days, and awards shows that self-congratulate them is a melting pot of roast.

@jaydan: news flash: the show is for the 1%ers that make california go round. The broadcast of the show is nothing but casting pearls before swine. Nobody cares if the swine aren't talking about the big night only 1% of the people care about. Think about that.

Will should have been escorted off the premises at a minimum. There's no way they should have let him stay and pretend nothing happened after that.

This is how you get people talking about your event. Will Smith and Chris Rock will be talked about more now than they have for 20 years, and the Oscar's probably got their biggest rating spike in history. Now when Smith and Rock do interviews, everyone will be watching. When they end up on camera together again, they could sell tickets. This was a smart move for the brands of everyone involved.

I just find the whole thing sad, I don't think Chris Rock's joke was all that bad but I can in some way understand why Will Smith was upset but he should have never done that.

Millions of men and women deal with hair loss due to alopecia everyday. Rock is a comedian. Will's wife isn't someone who is exempt from comedy. It was a joke. The Smith's need thicker skin, that is for sure.

Reality is: people are supporting both Smith and Rock. Some people thought Will Smith crossed the line and others think Chris Rock crossed the line. It will cause debate for a while and get some tabloids, but in the end it will amount to a big heap of nothing for both parties involved. Oscars is a dying show and it needed some controversy to get people to talk about it. In the end Academy gets full benefit of some Hollywood drama.

So many things Will Smith could have done instead of committing physical assault on national television. He could have taken his mic instead and explained how the comment was insensitive and raise awareness about alopecia. Keep in mind that he was also laughing before he saw his wife's reaction, so it's not like he knew any better. This is nothing more than a display of macho behaviour and toxic masculinity.

Funny that because of the slap way more people now know about her hair condition and her having sex with a younger man.

This wasn't mean-spirited. Other roasts have far worse. I remember some comedian in a Julia Louis Dreyfus roast/award thing suggest in front of everyone that she was faking her cancer. She laughed with the rest of the audience.

A working class person would have been arrested. Instead, he got applause while crying over his Oscar later.

I condone violence at all times. If you think your country was won on honest trading than you're nieve. Defending something also takes violence. There's times for peaceful talk and there's time for knocking down your fellow man. When the time comes, are YOU going to be on the ground or are YOU going to be the one delivering the smackdown?

@warm_gun: I don't think the joke was mean spirited either, but it was such a weak shitty joke that I think Will had the right to slap him for not putting more effort into roasting his wife. I wonder if her boyfriends will slap Chris also over this?

Chris Rock made a bald joke and will Smith threw a temper tantrum and a slap.

Chris Rock handled it quite well. I would have preferred he just start swinging on Will though, would have been better TV. As soon as he got slapped should have punched him back in the mouth.

Some interesting responses in this thread.

I don't think Will will be cancelled, personally. I think he has enough "good guy" equity in Hollywood to the point he can just apologize, do some anger management, and by then people will forget.

As others have said I am a little surprised he wasn't escorted off the premises at the time.

Actually "you" can be referenced as "the royal you" which means the general populace or a group of people.

For example if I just saw a specific person slap somebody and then I turned and spoke to you and said "Wow, you just don't slap somebody like that" I wasn't specifically meaning you. I was referring to the royal you.

The internet and the lack of voice inflection and body language makes this hard to distinguish, however, so perhaps a different phrasing is warranted. But I wouldn't say it's wrong.

Yeah, sad.

Also frankly a little out of character. Smith obviously has a huge ego but he seems like a good guy.

I think Will Smith is a bit of a character actor (or he wants to be at least) and he is quoted saying that in his last role as "King Richard" he was very protective. I mean filming stopped a long time ago but maybe since he was there accepting the reward as the actor that portrayed that guy m aybe he sort of fell back into it?

Still no excuse but it will be interesting if that is his excuse.

@mrbojangles25: No excuse? Look, just because you don't have anyone at home who has honor that you feel the need to defend when people maliciously call her out while she's feeling insecure about her hair falling out of her head, doesn't mean the rest of the world has to live the way you do.

In fact, everyone and anyone here that disagrees with that slap deserves the same treatment until you break down and actually slap the slapper back in the face.

It doesn't take much to make you just as low and petty as Will Smith. I know I can manipulate you to do anything I want. If I wanted you to wake up, I'd wake you up. If you choose to stay asleep, consider yourself due for another rude awakening.

Repeat as necessary until you are no longer a beta male.
