Basically I can either afford a 680i with no sound card, or something like an Asus P5N-e with a creative labs x-fi. So since im hearing that the 680i absolutely blows away all the competition, I want to go with my first choice, but Im just wondering if the onboard audio is any good at all, or if it'll be the sort of situation where as soon as I get $100 I go buy a card. 8 channel Azalia HDA is what newegg.com describes it as, for whatever it's worth....

Why are you planning to go with the 680i?
The high FSB and stability for OCing?

Yep pretty much, from the reviews I read it seems to be extremely solid overall.

Well the 650i gives it a run for it's money and is much easier on the wallet.
Do you have some nice $100 or more speakers? (I plan to get the Z-5300e)
I would go with the 650i and the X-Fi if you do.

Can you list out the rest of your build?
I can try and help you save some money or get more for your money.

lol the choice is clear...get the 650i with the x-fi sound card...trust me...the 680i isnt much better than the 650i in the performance area it just has more features that you dont really need. the 650i overclocks fine (if you are worried about that)

Im looking at a Core 2 Duo e6400
evga 680i
2gb ddr2 800 (I like the look of the dominator)
nvidia geforce 8800gts

(other specs)
thermaltake tsunami with ocz gameXstream 600w
WD caviar 320 gb

oh and I forgot to mention I dont have any nice speakers yet, Im running everything through a headset/ mic combo which is working fine for me, but I'd like to buy some speakers eventually.
