Poll RTX 4090 could pull 600 Watts. Power Consumption no longer matters? (11 votes)

Yes, don't care about power consumption. 18%
No, still care about power consumption. 82%

Looks like the RTX 4090 could pull up to 600 Watts. Now, me usually didn't really care about power consumptions. When I was an AMD user, nVidia fan boys used to criticize AMD due to their GPUs consuming more power in certain generations, hence one reason not to get AMD GPUs. (Will they do so with RTX 4090 if that is the case?). Now, be being a casual gamer who only plays certain games, I wouldn't find it particularly offensive. My RTX 3090 tops out at 350 Watts, although I would like it to be lower, I am okay with it given the performance I get.

But 600 Watts? Starting to sound ridiculous, no?

Time to go with Solar power if I want to harness the power of the RTX 4080.

This crap makes me appreciate my 75w 1650. Could be the last of it's kind.

So need another PSU if you wish to overclock that thing? :P

Anyway I got my eyes on 4080. Hopefully it is priced similar to 3080 when it released.

Matters. Having to upgrade PSU every GPU upgrade is dumb,

Also isn't that going to be even more heat generation? My 3080 already makes me have to use AC in summer when I otherwise wouldn't have had to.

I might have to go team AMD if the watt gap increases.

I keep derpin around looking at stuff, but nothing is really worth any jump right now. I'm on 10th gen intel + Aorus 3070. Will have to see what 4000 series + 13th gen intel pull off I guess.

such a hard life, dumping all my $ into my pc 2020 / early 21.......... upgrades rn not worth it, lulz.

@zaryia: Thought I read somewhere that Intel's ARC gpus will have relatively low power consumption. If they ever get around to releasing the damn things.

I always buy a 60 or 70 card (lower or midrange), but power consumption still matters. I'm a sucker for silence.

Thats a lot of juice :S. I have an 850W Corsair RM850X so i reckon the max wattage of my GPU should be around 480W (that should leave enough room for the rest of the system + power spikes from the GPU). Soooo the 4090 is out of range for me unless i get a new PSU.

As for how important power consumption is: id rank it 4th, maybe 5th on things i consider when purchasing a GPU. It's a factor but not a very big factor.

It does matter; I don't think you can get certain Dell or Alienware (or other) computers in California if they draw too much power. Not sure if that legislation is still in place, and you can still build your own, but if pre-made PC makers want to keep selling PC's to the most populous state with arguably the most "technophiles" in the country, they need to cut back on power demand.

I think there's a certain gluttony to consider as well when considering these things. Like, how much is too much? Where do we start focusing more on efficiency and maybe taking things in a different direction (i.e. lower-power GPU's that are better at some other aspect than just framerates, I don't know...)

Some day. Intel is building or has built (iirc) two foundries in the US, maybe eventually they'll start cranking them out.

Age of Maxwell cards and their power efficiency is long gone, they keep adding volts in order to stay relevant in the competition market demands, until they'll come up with new efficient architecture once again.
