First of all, hi! I've just joined, as you can see from my profile. I don't usually post in forums like these, but I'm trying it now.

So, I've been playing video-games since I was a kid. My tastes have changed over time. I used to play first person shooters. Now I don't. At the moment, I prefer the feeling of immersion and exploration when I drop off into a RPG game. I don't use anything other than my PC to play games (excluding mobile phone). The problem is, games are becoming dull for me. Say I get a new one. I load it up, really interested in it from the trailer. Here it is, there goes the introduction. "Holy shit, this is amazing!" I exclaim and get engaged for a good 5 or 6 hours. After that time, I really reconsider my actions. "How did I find this enjoyable at all? What is so special about it? Where's the fun?"

I get bored easily. Even outside video-games. I might be excited about any game I get, but the interest slowly withdraws to the point of boredom. I find many things repetitive. (I play RPGs, so no surprise there). I recently (re)finished Mass Effect 3. Even though I had played it before, it was still fun to go through the experience again. I made different choices now, so it was fun. And a second ago I complained about repetitive stuff. I hope you don't take it the wrong way, I'm real picky about games. So, please don't take offense if you suggest a game which I am not interested in.

Games I like:

Mass Effect Trilogy.

Mount & Blade: Warband.

Crusader Kings 2, Stellaris, and so on. (Most Paradox titles).

Sorcery! (Yeah, I know it's weird as shit to insert this into such a list).

Assassin's Creed Series.

The Banner Saga 1 and 2.

Overfall.

That's all about it. I'm sorry, I might be asking for a lot. Thanks in advance.

@tryit: Most of my games listed are either RPGs or related to strategy in a way. Or both.

I think your problem is variety. I love RPGs too, but I can get put off by the endless grind. Try stuff that is out of your comfort zone, platformers, adventure games, strategy games. There's probably too many to list seeing as how games that are a few years old age well on PC, but just browse reviews, online sales, try out Steam's discovery queue.

exactly.

I know this is true because I went thru the same thing.

First I avoided indies because I figured if there was no hype it must not be better. I was wrong

Then I avoided simple graphics games because I thought it would be too distracting, again I was wrong.

trying new venues is a good thing. In fact on that note I should try FPS again. I havent done a pure FPS is ages

If you bored with gaming stop for a while and do other stuff.

I have had several spells of going a few months hardly playing any games, then I can spot something I like the look of and become a recluse playing it.

If your not going to do other stuff I'll recommend Dark Souls franchise, its hit or miss with people but when its a hit its a massive hit.

@GTR12: "Keep making excuses."

Nice one bud. Let me remind you that I'm choosing a video-game suited for my playstyle which shouldn't concern you at all. What's truly "LOL" is "those excuses" are my preferences and I am not obligated to like a game which you like. Keep that in mind next time you post something so thoughtless, will ya?

@thehig1: Thanks. I think it's the fact that I'm burning out due to how much I play video-games. On several occasions, I have left a game on my desktop for a few months and when I returned to it, looked like a complete new experience.

No, the fact that you refuse to try anything new is why you "are getting bored", preferences are one thing, but completely ignoring other genres is just ignorant.

Try something with addicting gameplay like Warframe (free) or maybe Rocket League.

There's a Warlock on Firetop Mountain gamebook adaption that's pretty cool too. More of a smaller scale dungeon crawl opposed to the epic adventure of Sorcery! though.

@GTR12: I'm not ignoring anything though. Yes, I know you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but I'm getting some ideas as to what that game would look like, which is something I am not interested in.

And yep, I still think it's colorful. I don't see myself getting immersed into a game which throws rainbows and flashy animations at me. That's how it looks like anyway, I've not played it.

I still have all 4 of the original Sorcery! gamebooks from the 80s, but haven't started the digital versions yet, although I did grab them all on a sale. Looking forward to getting into them.

Are you a fan of cRPGs also ?

@zzzhhh: The only way I can "design" a game would be to make one. And by game I mean an interactive text game, and that's not even designing, just writing. So, yeah, other stuff requires too much learning and I feel it would be too hard to do.

I personally think that games, in general, offer you emotion and excitement for a determined period of time. Sometimes, it's important to let yourself get some rest from different games. In that order, my advise would be: vary frequently the games that you play. I'm not say, of course, buy a new game every single weekend. I understand it's sometimes difficult to try to be updated when your financial status doesn't allow you to, but it's very important that you try to dedicate some time to all the games you now have and in that way you will be able to continue playing avoiding boredom. I, personally, try to dedicate the same amount fo time to the games I have and even sometimes you get really excited about a game and you want to play at all time, it's better if you let the game and yourself rest from each other. Next time you come back to play that one game you will feel fresh and renewed and that's going to happen to all the different games you have. Again, this is just a personal perspective and I give you this tip because it works for me. If anyone gives it a try, let me know how it works for you, please

A few that come to mind are
Gothic series
Styx: Master of Shadows (similar to AC in my opinion)
Shadow of Mordor
The Witcher 1/2/3
Someone suggested Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning which I agree
Thief series

Listen to your body, quit for a week or two...you'll enjoy coming back.

Or else try some mmorpg like GW2, it's free (core game) huge, with a pleasant gamers community.

And if it doesn't work change genre ^^

Give gaming a break.

I sometimes find myself sitting in front of my computer, looking at my Steam library, a whole list of games I have installed from the whole spectrum of game genres, and feel like "Meh". When this happens, I pick up a book or watch a movie and generally don't game for a while. I haven't played a game for three days, actually, as of this writing. I still have Battletech and Frostpunk to play, too.

@misterdeathborn said:

Nothing, your list is fine. If you like those games then you like them, don't let people tell you otherwise. Tryit has good tastes, just is a little opinionated :P I'm the same way I just won't tell you what you like is garbage.

Try games like kerbal space programme. You build space craft, aeroplanes etc. I have 196 hours in that when it first came out but not played for some time. Not even tried missions as back then it just had build mode and no objectives apart from your own. Just started it back up last night and probably going to give it another 200hours. At least now they have proper up to tutorials as well to walk you threw about how to attach rockets and stuff.

Perhaps you need to play games with a deeper story for it to feel nourishing. After all, the catharsis that you feel is done primarily through storytelling. Also, give books and movies a go; maybe you just need a break from games.

RPG games with rich stories:

Witcher 3

Horizon Zero Dawn

Nier Automata

Kingdom Come Deliverence

Persona 5

Xenoblade Chronicles 2

There are obviously more but these are the ones that first come to my mind out of the recent ones.

I can understand why you get bored, I've been getting bored lately so I took a break and now I'm gaming again. I recommend you try this game, it is the best game I have ever played. Deus Ex: Game of the Year
