GOP's Gohmert introduces resolution that would ban the Democratic Party

https://thehill.com/homenews/house/508759-gops-gohmert-introduces-resolution-that-would-ban-the-democratic-party

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) introduced a House resolution Thursday calling on lawmakers to ban organizations or political groups that have historically supported the Confederacy or slavery in the U.S., a list he said includes the Democratic Party.

“A great portion of the history of the Democratic Party is filled with racism and hatred. Since people are demanding we rid ourselves of the entities, symbols, and reminders of the repugnant aspects of our past, then the time has come for Democrats to acknowledge their party’s loathsome and bigoted past, and consider changing their party name to something that isn’t so blatantly and offensively tied to slavery, Jim Crow, discrimination, and the Ku Klux Klan,” Gohmert said in a statement.

The resolution is co-sponsored by GOP Reps. Andy Biggs (Ariz.), Jody Hice (Ga.), Randy Weber (Texas) and Andy Harris (Md.)

It comes after the House on Wednesday voted to remove from the Capitol statues of people who served in the Confederacy or defended slavery.

Lmao low IQ or just crazy gas-lighting?

Must be a slow news day. It's an interesting move to see how Democrats, especially the far left folks, would take addressing a silly name change and locking them in to a statement/addressing it.

Not really. Plenty of bigger news, like the Jacksonville rally being cancelled or Biden's 13 point lead poll in FL. Or Trump's stimulus talk breakdown.

I just thought this in particular was hilarious, because of how amazingly idiotic it is. I had to do a double take!

Nah, no one should react with any real action over this lunacy. It's extremely stupid, and people are laughing at the stunt clown Gohmert....as they should be.

@zaryia: As I suspected, definitely a slow news day. Of course it's dumb, but then again, so is a lot of the political grandstanding that occurrs in Washington DC.

He's the only person I've seen consistently argue with this same logic on the KKK and their history in the US.

The GOP should be banned too then. They have a racist history as well. A more recent in at that.

Looks like Gohmert needs a history lesson. If he honestly believes the Democratic and Republican parties align the way they did in the 1860s, then he needs to stop eating Goya beans and go take the Montreal Cognitive Assessment.

Aren't democrats fighting for a world of cancellation based on past transgressions and association no matter how vague or how long ago? Seems fitting that democrats would withdraw from the election. Again, because of the endless lies and polarisation in the echo chambers, democrats are in a bad position. It didn't have to be that way.

If this would actually happen (it wont), I could see The Democratic base splitting up between a new centrist party, and the green party.

Some people who happen to be democrats? Yes

The democrats as an organization? No

But I remember Obama speaking out against Cancel Culture, and I wouldnt be surprised if Biden and most other people of any real power were opposed to it as well.

You think Biden is going to oppose the cult? I don't think he'd dare. But that would be something, at least. It would greatly help his election.

If you're going to use isolated individuals as an example of a larger demographic......something bigots/racists engage in then we can do that. Using trump as an example we can extrapolate that Republicans are all unintelligent, unempathetic, racist, sexist, homophobes. Is that how you want to judge large groups?

Makes sense. If you’re going to tear down historic statues because their beliefs don’t align with 2020, then the Democratic Party should be on your dismantle list too.

Democrats ejected their racists in the 40s and 50s in the form of dixiecrats who then all joined and influenced the Republican party. Republicans have become the party of racists while Democrats left it behind. Troll history need not apply.

Useless legislation that assumes that nothing has changed in the last 100+ years. Yes, the Democratic party used to be the party of the south. Nobody's trying to hide that. It was pretty darn clear in my grade school history books. Then again, I was one of the few who actually enjoyed history class. The Civil Rights Act changed how the south voted, since their own party betrayed them on segregation. Some things aren't static and fortunately the Democratic party moved on for the better.

I agree the liberal mindset is they have to right to cancel anything until it is something about them. Still wondering how the hell Ralph Northam is still governor after that yearbook photo. I don't hear anything from the left about that. Can't even imagine if a photo like that came out for a republican governor they would have been eaten alive.

So that makes it okay right? Again both parties have people that are bad that support them. That was my point, but I always love to see you justify something the left does wrong by bringing up the right to justify the behavior. Its just sad that you support all of this hate that is happening.

Their claim to the party of Lincoln is undermined by their defense of confederate statues and use of the confederate flag.

Pathetically irrelevant given the topic you're in. You can't always 'bu bu both sides' your way out of everything.

Well you are talking about a few and extrapolating that to the majority. Which is why I asked you if you wanted us to do that with other demographics. You can't have it both ways. You either accept that it's some or paint the Republicans the same as their examples.

Gohmert is essentially the JimB of Congress.

The Democrat party is the same as the Confederate statues in fact they are the same.

Was, but I know you don't care about such details.

@LJS9502_basic: No, I'm giving examples of Democrats in Government addressing the issues Kung was discussing. But if you want to move the goal post, and then strawman, to generalizations about Republicans ... Um? What?

Well you are talking about a few and extrapolating that to the majority. Which is why I asked you if you wanted us to do that with other demographics. You can't have it both ways. You either accept that it's some or paint the Republicans the same as their examples.

Again, you said "no" to what Kung was discussing with no context or any effort what-so-ever. I gave two very readily available examples of Democrats in Government sustaining what Kung was discussing. But if you want to step back and expand upon to your "no" as a country-wide context, by all means, have at it champ.

Yes I did. He blamed an entire demographic. You apparently agreed with that.

The confederate statues are all Democrats I can't change the facts. Nancy Pelosi is taking down all the pictures in the congress of past Speakers that were with the Confederacy, they are also all Democrats. Gohmert is just doing the same thing.
