https://www.insider.com/hong-kong-police-fire-blue-dye-water-cannons-2019-8

  • Protesters clashed with police in Hong Kong on Saturday as thousands rallied in spite of a police ban on demonstrating.
  • Police put blue dye in water cannons, intended to stain protesters and mark them out for arrest later.
  • The Hong Kong protests, sparked by a proposed extradition bill from mainland China, have been going on for thirteen weeks.

As flashpoints erupt between protesters and police in Hong Kong, water cannons filled with blue dye are being turned on the protesters.

Hong Kong citizens were out en masse protesting for the thirteenth week in a row on Saturday, despite a police ban on rallying. The protests were sparked in June by a proposed extradition bill by mainland China.

There were flashpoints between the police and protesters on Saturday, with the police deploying tear gas and water cannons, while protesters threw bricks and molotov cocktails, setting fire to barricades.

Police put blue dye in the water cannons directed at protesters, coating the road in a blue wash. The dye is intended to stain protesters, marking them out for later arrest.

Several prominent activists were arrested on Friday ahead of Saturday's protests, although two were subsequently released on bail. One of the arrested activists, Agnes Chow, shared pictures of the blue jets of water.

Last week Hong Kong police said it had arrested 86 protesters, including a 12-year-old child.

The police are spraying blue liquid to mark protesters for arresting them later. And just beating the F out of them. Messed up, right?

On mobile atm so I will fix links and more tomorrow when I got access to computer again.

China will gain control of Hong Kong eventually, it's only a matter of time.

Hong Kong has seen over 3 months of massive protests - I'm surprised it took this long for anyone to make a thread about it.

Is this not making headlines in the US? It gets reported about constantly here in Australia.

There is no positive outcome. The PRC controls the HK government and police and to cave to protestors would be to invite the same in Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing.

The counter protests and pro-PRC sentiments in Canada bother me quite a bit too.

@volsung: Yeah. There’s a lot of foreign Chinese students in Canada and they need to toe the CCP line and follow the narrative otherwise their finances and their family are in trouble. Plus a lot of them are intensely patriotic in general.

The scary thing is, due to the trade war and shit, China needs to look tough, so if given the choice of caving in and being diplomatic, or doing something terrible and oppressing the shit out of Hong Kong, they're going to do the latter.

No it's reported every day here. I just think on these forums if it's not the US (and occasionally Britain, of late), it doesn't get discussed.

I find it fascinating, and I hope the people get what they want. Americans should totally support Hong Kong unofficially, or maybe even officially. Political revolution by the people, for the people, hell yeah.

Now, as for the abuses, that's pretty terrible. I can't get behind China's excessive use of force and Gestapo tactics.

Our President should talk about it, but he wont. Just as Obama did nothing as people yearning for freedom were gunned down in the streets of Tehran, our current President will do the age old rule of jack shit. And China will take over Hong Kong.

@mrbojangles25: China already have a million people locked up in “re educational camps”, they will lock up or kill every citizen of Hong Kong if it needs to I bet.

@Nuck81: It has been done in protests around the world.

Trade talk are “keeping down the temperature” in Hong Kong, the president said.

OH and some more I found. The article is rather long so I won't post all of it here.

WASHINGTON — President Trump has shifted his stance on the unrest in Hong Kong in recent days to show greater solidarity with the pro-democracy protesters after coming to view the issue as a point of leverage in trade negotiations with China.

For months, Trump administration officials described the Hong Kong uprising as an internal matter for China, aware of how delicate the issue is for President Xi Jinping and other Communist Party officials. With tensions already high between the two nations and trade talks stalled, the administration chose to tread lightly.

But as the protests have dragged on, advisers to Mr. Trump have succeeded in making the case that wading into the issue could prove necessary — and advantageous — to the United States as it tries to push Beijing to accede to its trade terms.

After previously saying Hong Kong was a “very tough situation” that was up to Chinese leaders to handle, Mr. Trump has more recently called on those leaders to offer a “humane” response and urged Mr. Xi to engage in dialogue with the protesters.

The change in the administration’s tone appeared to be carefully coordinated this week, after Mr. Trump on Sunday issued a warning to China. The words were couched in practical terms centered on a trade deal, not in the language of human rights, but they were nevertheless surprising given Mr. Trump’s earlier passive remarks on Hong Kong.

“I think it would be very hard to deal if they do violence,” Mr. Trump said on Sunday. “I mean, if it’s another Tiananmen Square, it’s — I think it’s a very hard thing to do if there’s violence.”

Most tyrants want people to rule over. Bombing Hong Kong to the stone age to stop armed protesters does nothing but give them rubble and millions of dead bodies to rule over.

Want a real-life example of how superior firepower alone isn't enough to rule a country? Here's two, Iraq and Afghanistan.

You guys need to learn the reality of the situation.

The vast majority in HK do not support the protesters. People have been beaten up for expressing pro-China views, train stations, toll booths, shops and small businesses have been destroyed.

I have listened to so many stories on the news about small businesses shutting down and families being ruined.

Protesters are armed with metal and wooden sticks, Molotov's, lasers, police have been stabbed, police have been beaten up, the family of police are being targeted at every level including their children.

They have even stormed into government buildings and smashed up the place.

This is not peaceful protesting! They are not protesters but the mob.

However, if you only watch and read western media. You might believe that the entire HK population is rioting but in fact the protesters are a disillusioned and lost minority.

China's spent the last 10 years+ on a global charm offensive. A generation has almost grown up without any real news about the human rights abuses of previous governments. Showing concessions to HK might be a good way to assure the rest of the world this is really a new era for China and not just an extended PR campaign.

Sure, I absolutely support the protests for as long as they're focused on realistic goals. The violence is a worry though. Would be a shame to see the movement hijacked and have a golden opportunity for HK and the mainland come to nothing.

@sonicare: the chineese government is abusive, I understand completely why people in Hong Kong want separation in thier laws from mainland China. They are extremely authoritative compared to the west.

I feel sorry for Hong Kong, they are no longer backed by Britain, they are apart of China. So they most likely will be taken over. No more Hong Kong privellege for them.

On the plus side, civil unrest in Hong Kong helps America durring the trade war with China. Optics for China are not looking good.

That was trending on Reddit the other day, and I was pretty impressed with both his clever reaction (dousing it in water to extinguish the heating mechanism that causes the substance to become airborne) and his restraint from lobbing it back instead.

Behind a made-for-TV Hong Kong protest narrative, Washington is backing nativism and mob violence

"Hong Kong’s increasingly xenophobic protests are devolving into chaos with help from US government regime-change outfits and a right-wing local media tycoon with close ties to hardliners in Washington." - by Dan Cohen, The Grayzone

@horgen: You did not see the protesters beating an innocent man from China at the airport? They beat him up, tied him up and attempted to remove his trousers.

Or the numerous times they were beating up the police, or fighting pedestrians for supporting the government?

Or when protesters went on the rampage smashing up government offices, toll way booths, train stations?

Of course you won’t see these things, you only read western media.

Playing devil's advocate here. Isn't this apart of normal behaviour seen in similar instances to this? (I don't condone their actions). This just looks like a handful of radial people. This is going to happen on both sides and doesn't make up the majority of them. Cops do it and some protestors do it. I've also seen a video where thousands (which is a lot more people then the videos you posted) of them moving for an ambulance.

There's going to be violence, it's very rare for a place to gain independent power without violence of some sort.

There are no effective democratic ways over there to show their dissatisfaction. One of the protesters' five demands is literally for full, universal suffrage of everyone in Hong Kong. At present, not everyone can vote. Also, no one can vote for the Chief Executive (the leader, whom business groups pick from a pool of China-approved candidates) and more than half of the legislature is made up of pro-China interest groups. There is very little democracy in Hong Kong. I find it offensive you are labeling them as terrorists when essentially the entire population of the territory has been out protesting, because there is no other way, against the erosion of their rights from China.

also, hello, do you remember me?

And considering their methods, yes these are indeed terrorists not demonstrates.

@Jacanuk: Like what? Please tell me what are the “plenty of democratic ways” in Hong Kong. I’ve spent significant time there and I can tell you it only has the veneer of a democracy.

What methods? There has been almost 8 million people protesting and the vast, vast, vast majority of them have been peaceful. Calling them “terrorists” makes me believe you’re falling for Chinese propaganda. Use some critical thinking skills.

Not really and false equivalence there mate.

These people can use democratic ways to show their dissatisfaction not act like terrorists

Like tarring and feathering British loyalists.... But hey, you know what, apply that logic to the Civil Rights March, the American Revolution, Gandhi's Protests in India and so on. See how anything you say makes sense.

Goddamn you've fallen so low. The protests have been mostly peaceful and in response to what the protests deemed as an undermine to people's rights and freedoms if the extradition treaty was passed. I don't know what you mean by calling them "terrrorists" unless you're sucking the PRC Teet, which is the only thing that makes sense.

Anyways, on the bright side, the extradition bill has been withdrawn. However, I'm not too familiar to what's actually going on so don't know how it'll actually last.

Calling these demonstrators terrorists is the same as calling anybody that's against trump or its supporters terrorists.

Hong kong is done for, that's what happens when the western world that people love to hate so much leaves you alone. U will be picked up and stripped to the bone and all your freedoms and rights are straight flushed down the toilets.

Get ready for communisme.

@Gatygun: You won’t be saying that if you live in HK. The vast majority of the people here call them terrorists.

The Western media does not illustrate the problem. They throw Molotov’s at police stations, it’s HKD8,000 a night if you go to the front, HKD500 if you are at the back.

They go around destroying public property, government offices and they will beat you up if you disagree with them.

Check other news sites iCable news, TVB, CGTN, RTHK and you will see what the western media does not show you.

In the past few days, some girls have come out. Girls aged between 13-15 are being brainwashed to provide comfort (sex) to these so called warriors. They are told they are, ‘little angels’.

So yes these are terrorists. I like the majority of people in HK want them locked up.

@kadin_kai: Assuming you actually are from Hong Kong, which I doubt, it’s funny that you talk about the “local media”, which is almost entirely controlled by the pro-China puppet government and mainland interests. Western media isn’t perfect but I’d take them over Chinese propaganda any day of the week. The only local sources that aren’t Chinese propaganda are Apple Daily and Hong Kong Free Press, which corroborate everything that western media is reporting.

Please provide evidence of the claim that “the majority of people in HK want them locked up”. Wumao?

Meanwhile, Carrie Lam is currently the least popular of any chief executive ever lmao

@leicam6: No I am not “from Hong Kong.” I am in Hong Kong right now! To be a little more precise, I spend half my time in HK and half in China.

So are you saying TVB is controlled by China?

Can you please provide evidence that TVB is controlled by China? Ah you cannot right!

I love to see an independent Hong Kong, where will you import food from? Practically all food in HK comes from China! How will you get your cheap vegetables?

How about water? 75-80% of fresh water consumed in HK comes from China!

And electricity? The power stations are ancient and we rely on the one across the border in Shenzhen

How is the HK army? Ah it does not exist!

HK is a gateway into China! If that gateway is closed, then the entire city will collapse!

So in short, yes I am in Hong Kong! I am one of those people who have a decent job, pay my taxes and contribute to society!

I am not one of those cowards throwing Molotov’s at the police, smashing up MTR stations, destroying toll booths, pouring ink on those who disagree with your ideals. Or pushing elderly women of trains when they voice their opinions that differ from yours.

What a bunch of uneducated, hopeless cowardly terrorists who hide behind masks!

So what is your plan for annexing a part of China? The British will not help you, they won't even let those born in HK to live in the UK. Or will you ask Trump for help?

Face the facts. HK is almost entirely dependent on the mainland. Hong Kong really has nothing going for it, its economically dependent on China and even Shenzhen has surpassed HK.

@kadin_kai: Ah, so you're a mainlander? Well, that explains that lol. I suppose you do need to tread the CCP line otherwise your social credit rating will go down.

There's plenty of info out there regarding TVB's pro-China bias. All from non-Western sources! Even South China Morning Post, another Communist Party mouthpiece, is reporting on TVB.

A lot of your post is such incessant rambling. The protesters aren't fighting for independence nor have I argued that independence is what Hong Kong needs, though it would be nice. The protests are simply that Beijing and the central government should abide by "One country, two systems", like was promised by Deng after the handover. This includes bringing universal suffrage for both the legislature and the Chief Executive. It's really that simple.

@leicam6: Again you make uneducated assumptions. No I am not a mainlander.

So tell me, whats the going rate for standing at the front and attacking the police? It was HKD 8,000 last week and HKD 500 for staying in the back!

Where are you going this weekend? Which MTR station are you going to smash and burn?

Do you know how many businesses have closed down due to these terrorists? These local HK businesses that cannot conduct business and yet have to pay ridiculous high rent?

Just think about it huh? Are you helping Hong Kong or destroying it?

But I want to thank you. I am happy that house prices are coming down, I can pick up another apartment and rent it out! Thanks for that!
