So I finally managed to save up a thousand bucks. As, I'm sure, you guys already know, I've always been a consoles' fan, so at first I had the intention of buying a PS4 and an X1 but now I'm dubious about it (Just look at those comparison videos of Wither 3). I know of a notebook which is nearly of the same price as a PS4 combined with an X1. Technically speaking, is the notebook any better than the consoles? Would you recommend it over the consoles, taking into account the exclusives I'll probably miss out on in the future?

If there is no possibility of getting a desktop, then get the PS4+XO.

Get a desktop PC. Notebooks are shit for gaming unless you spend close to $2000. You can build a respectable gaming desktop for $1000.

If you're willing to settle with a laptop screen, you should be fine with an average monitor =p

If it's a choice between a notebook or two consoles, mobility isn't part of the equation. So as others have said get a desktop PC not a laptop.

You can easily get a list of parts (just post in the hardware forum) for your price range and get the system built, if self building isn't something you want to do. I will add though that PC gaming can be daunting to someone who hasn't delved in before.

There is a bit of presumption here that you already have a monitor or decent TV you can plug it into. Most graphics cards have HDMI and display port outputs but DVI is becoming a lot rarer. This may be something you need to take into consideration.

I would honestly get PS4 + Xbox One over a $1000 PC of any kind. The console exclusives I would miss out on (Madden, The Show, Bloodborne, Naughty Dog games) outweigh the muscle advantage of a $1000 PC. Now make that a $3000 computer and force me to choose and my answer would be different. With a $3000 computer I could comfortably play all games released so far, maxed at 1440p and frame rates well above consoles. That PC would require 2 high end GPU'S to play games like GTA V and The Witcher 3 at those settings and resolutions. Take one GPU away and that's no longer possible.

Man I don't know, what are you planning to do with the notebook? Do you need it for work? I'd spent the money on PC parts if I was planning on playing PC games, just because playing PC games on a laptop is wack. Getting two consoles would be ace, but I'd get a Wii U/PS4 combo instead of X1.

@elkoldo: get a desktop and use your tv as the monitor, or get an inexpensive monitor still very good picture on most.

If you really don't want a desktop then get the consoles.

Laptop arnt made for gaming, heat is always an issue.

Spending nearer 2000 is the price point you will get decent gaming performance ffrom a laptop

A few months ago my friend bought a laptop with a 970m for 1399USD and it's a great performer.

It performs a little better than a desktop GTX 680 which is already more than twice the power of the PS4.

Hell, last year I bought a laptop off ebay for 315USD that has an i5 3230m and an Nvidia 650m which can handle most games fine although it's in not as strong as current consoles.

I would recommend to get one console of which you prefer more and just save the rest for something else. Maybe a better TV or whatever.

Lol at some answers here, PC gamers are the worst.

A notebook is a always overpriced for what it is, you'll get used to it. I'll be honest with you when I say keep looking for used deals for a 780m, 880M, or 970m that are around $1100 - $1200 because the 965m you'll get at best with $1000 is so severely outdated you'll be playing modern games at low to medium settings to achieve respectable frame rates.

Would I recommend it over consoles? Depends. I value AAA exclusives and the PlayStation ecosystem more than what a notebook could get me at $1000. So for me, no. If you're into a huge variety of low to mid budget games, emulation, maxing out last gen, and the odd big PC exclusive like DotA then the laptop comes first.

Personally, I'd take the two consoles at that price.

@RyviusARC: well there are exceptions but generally you need to spend more to get perofmance from laptop's.

I don't see the value in them at all, only if you you travel so much your never in the same place more than a few nights.

Between those, easily the PS4 + XBO.

But with that budget, make a gaming desktop, BOOM

Depends on your preferences but out of those 3, definitely the Consoles. Get which ever platform(s) your friends play on and the environment you prefer than asking a question like that in a sub-forum named System wars lol.

TC, never, EVER get a notebook for gaming. Period. If a 1000$ desktop is not possible, you should absolutely get the PS4+Xbox combo.

@elkoldo: Desktop PC if you are concerned about the graphical devide between the consoles and the PC, Notebook wont cut it, not for dedicated games. you are just throwing your money away

If you really don't care about the graphics and prefer a MUCH easier and stress free life, go consoles.... this is what the sensible people do

Care to explain your reasoning? I have built PC's across the spectrum of power and price. I also play all of the latest games at 1440p maxed and I know what performance I get. People who claim they can "max" games out on a $1000 machine are full of shit. I can provide dozens of benchmarks that will back that up.

gaming laptops are very expensive. I would say only buy one if you need one for work or school. Dont buy both a ps4 and x1 they both have pretty much the same line up its a waste of money.

A laptop or a pair of consoles. What an odd thing to be choosing between.

If you want mobility, get a laptop

If you want power and a huge game library, get a desktop

If you want console exclusives, buy a Wii U

If you're on a tight budget, buying both consoles is pointless.

The reason I don't want a PC is simply because this is my first professional computer and I'm not into building computers part by part, so I just decided to spend the whole money on a full package, namely the laptop. It appears though it's not the best idea. So maybe I'll just make a new thread in the hardware board to gain some knowledge.

Anyways, thank you guys all very much for your time.

I'd either get a X1/WiiU, PS4/WiiU, or build a nice desktop. The X1 and PS4 are too similar to buy both (if you're only going to have 2 systems).

E3 is soon if you want to see which console looks more promising in the near future. Also, building a desktop isn't too difficult if you have a good guide.

I abhore notebooks for gaming. Shoving a bunch of hot-running parts into a box sounds like a better way of making a pizza than a computer.

if you are serious about getting into pc gaming you need to learn or you will piss away 100s on pre builds. Its not super hard and will save you a lot of money. It allows you to get all the parts you want without over spending on stuff you dont need. also if you need to upgrade you will have to pay someone to do it for you making it more costly.

You can always buy three Xbox One's, tape them together and receive 3x the amount of frames. The Cloud and DX12 will be available later on so even more power AND its free. No brainer if you ask me.

Please don't waist your money on a notebook especially if you plan on gaming with it. Also, DON'T BUY ANYTHING ALIENWARE! I mean it! Don't! I bought an Alienware X51 and (aside from the I7 processor) it's all fucking junk. My X51 has burned 3 GPU's in 18 months, not to mention multiple random hardware failures and unexplained weirdness (machine randomly turning on/off) and their customer support is a laughing stalk unless you're willing to pay an annual fee of $199. If you don't pay the annual fee you'll end up talking to some shady dude from somewhere in India who speaks very poor english. Anything associated with Dell is garbage - period!

Consider building your own PC or let places like iBUYPOWER build it for you (I wish I did this) their systems are very affordable and they use quality brand name parts and won't rip you off unlike Dell. You can build a pretty damn good gaming PC for about $600 (think it's actually cheaper than this) and still have coin left over for a console.

As for the console I would go with the XBO if you go the PC route I suggested. Keep in mind Windows 10 will soon be out and it will be heavily integrated with the XBO. Certain games you buy for the PC will also be available for free to download for your XBO and visa versa. Also, game streaming and also cross platform play which means a lot more people to play with online. Windows 7 and 8.1 users will also get a free Windows 10 upgrade. Something to consider. If you're going for a PC/console combo then there's no better combo than XBO/PC. Just buy the PS4 down the road for whatever exclusives that interest you.

@elkoldo: I would never recommend a notebook over a console. I would recommend PCs over a console, but not a notebook.

.. You can get a Alienware Alpha+ a XboxOne/PS4 for under $1000.. I would never recommend anything alienware EXCEPT for this device.. It is affordable and actually works extremely well for it's price and size.. I can't think of anything on the market that comes this price point with what you get, at this size and comes with a full windows os.. Regardless if you build a machine or not.. Currently I have the Alienware Alpha $450 i3 model.. The only thing I did with it is spent $70 for a 1tb sshd and $20 for another 4gb of ram.. The system works amazingly well.. For newer games like Dragon Age Inquistion at 1080p with medium settings across the board with tesselation at low, and no msaa.. I am pulling a solid 60fps and the game still looks great.. I know because I have played this game extensively on my main desktop (which has I5 2500k at 4.5ghz with a MSI 970 GTX overclocked to 1450mhz (pretty much matching stock 980 performance))

And wah lah you now have access to multiple platforms at a cost under a notebook.. And the Alienware alpha is extremely tiny, not much larger than a Wii. I would find getting the xbox one and PS4 an incredible waste of money to purchase both, they share entirely too many games amongst each other and the exclusive library is extremely low compared to last gen.. Meanwhile the Alpha opens you up to the entire pc library of games stretching back over 15 years, while giving you better performance than a console at a affordable package of a system that is also a full range pc.

I abhore notebooks for gaming. Shoving a bunch of hot-running parts into a box sounds like a better way of making a pizza than a computer.

..... Notebook components are designed to run at much higher temperatures than the desktop counterparts for obvious reasons.. As long as you get a well designed notebook (the asus ROG ones for instance are well designed) that doesn't get uncomfortable to hold, temperatures really don't matter as long as it stays in the designed parameters.. Even then when it gets hotter there is no risk of damaging components because they automatically throttle back.. Which with these laptops shouldn't happen in less they have their vents blocked or their is a defect in the particular laptop...

Not to mention its a silly complaint when we are talking about consoles which are dealing with the exact same problems.. The Xbox One sounds like a jet engine when it is taxed.

None. Get a WiiU or a desktop PC instead.
