Not really. 2007 is not widely considered one of the best years in gaming. That statement only holds true for 1998, which is indeed widely considered one of the best years in gaming.

As for my picks, I'd say the top five years in gaming: were: 1992, 1997, 1998, 2001, and 2017.

1992 was pretty awesome... Euro launch of SNES, with loads of brilliant games releasing that year: Super Mario World, Link To The Past, Street Fighter II, Super Probotector (aka Contra), Super Castlevania IV, Pilotwings, F-Zero, Super Mario Kart, Desert Strike, Lemmings, Sim City and plenty more. What a savage first year!

Plus Sonic 2 over on the Mega Drive, if you really must include the SNES' rival :P

@Jag85: Huh? 2007 is absolutely put on a pedestal, and for good reason. Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Portal + the rest of the Orange Box, COD4, Halo 3, Crysis, The Witcher, S.T.A.L.K.E.R, I'm gonna stop listing there but you get the idea, Jesus what a year that was :D

@locopatho: Nearly all of the 2007 games you mentioned are... shooters. That's the problem with 2007. It's certainly a memorable year for shooters, but it's a forgettable year for almost everything else. The only games on your list that are not shooters are Mario Galaxy (platformer) and The Witcher (RPG that is vastly inferior to its sequels). 2007 had a serious lack of variety and diversity. It was a year dominated by shooters and motion-control shovelware, with very little else to offer. In contrast, 2001 and 2017 were full of variety and diversity, with great games across numerous different genres.

Umm.. yeah. '92 was a beast, lol. I don't really know which game came when, but '92 is a clear contender, if not winner.

Gaming has been generally good. You can always find good games. The issue is when folks place too much stock in the highly marketed ones their disappointed dominates there overall experience.

Original GTA

Tomb Raider 2

WCW vs NWO

And best of all, the awesome 4 player Split Screen living room parties with Mario Kart 64 and Goldeneye.

2017 and 2018 were ridiculously good. At a point, in the last two years, between indies and AAAs we had quality games coming out almost at a daily basis. My backlog just got huge.

Borderlands

Modern Warfare 2

Infamous

2004:

Unreal Tournament 2004

Halo 2

Half life 2

World of Warcraft

GTA San Andreas

Doom 3

Prince of Persia Warrior Within

KOTOR 2

Burnout 3

Need for Speed Underground 2

Far Cry

Warhammer 40000

Rome Total War

Metroid Prime 2

Fable

Jak 3

Paper Mario

Star Wars Battlefront

Batlle for Middle Earth 2

Hitman Contracts

Rise of Nations thrones and patriots

MGS 3

Splinter Cell Pandoras tomorrow

Counter strike source

Roller Coaster Tycoon 3

Ninja Gaiden

The Chronicles of Riddick

As you can see most of these games are sequels, but reinvented sequels on all the fronts of any genre and thus remain timeless. RTS, racer, multiplayer, MMO, Single Player campaigns their feature sets were all reinvented for ALL GENRES. It was the time gaming turned bigger, from bigger studios with better graphics and animations, higher budgets with a ton of features and graphics far beyond their predecessors dreams. Yea 2004, that was the year. 2005 is a close second, nothing beats the Launch of the Xbox 360. Kameo, PGR3, Call Of Duty 2, NFS MW, Perfect Dark 0 and Amped 3 were enough reasons to buy that beast back then.

2004, if only for the release of Half-Life 2 and Steam.

We also got:

  • World of Warcraft
  • The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.
  • GTA: San Andreas (arguably the best GTA)
  • Far Cry
  • Rome: Total War
  • Knights of the Old Republic 2 (the mechanically better but plot-inferior sequel to KOTOR 1)
  • Counter-Strike: Source
  • Star Wars Battlefront
  • The Sims 2 (my fondest iteration of the franchise)
  • Fable

@jahnee: beat me to it.

Eh.

Mario Galaxy - Platformer
World In Conflict - RTS
Portal - puzzle game
Virtua Fighter 5 - Fighting game (3D one no less)
Rock Band - rhythm/music
PGR4 - Racing
God of War 2 - beat-em up

It's an overrated year to say the least, but I don't think it's just the lack of diversity of genres. It has more to do with what games got gassed up, and how many of them really aren't all that great and have only become less n less special over time. Tho if we going down that path, I don't want to be the one who opens up the can of worms that is Ocarina of Time sucks.

On topic

2001 and 2004 are strong as **** years for video games. 2001 PS2 alone could carry that year, without Halo 1 from Xbox and fucking Rogue Leader and Smash Bros. Melee (a fighting game oh btw that still has a popular competitive scene going strong to this day, suck a dick nintendoboy you twit) from the Gamecube. A lot of these recent years don't stack up that favorably in the grand scheme of things.

Early 2000's for me. So, the Gamecube & PS2 I'd mainly say. I'm saying that because I look back on that time with the most nostalgia.

Recently though, my time with the Switch (2017-) has been great.

Perhaps it aged poorly, I don't really know.

I've been playing Far Cry for the first time recently. While the beginning and the occasional later open levels ARE awesome, most of the gameplay time is actually confined to dull, grey, linear corridors. I'm sure the game as a whole was mindblowing in 2004, and I'm sure you probably remember it as being non-stop awesome, but it's really not. I've been forcing myself through the boring linear parts in hopes of getting to the next open area, but I'm not sure if I'll ever manage to finish it. It can be a slog.

I'm judging the game relative to the period it belongs to. Why apply 2019's standards to 2004? Shenmue 1 and 2 were great for time but are now awful as Shenmue 3 shows.

2004 is still the best year in gaming history.

We were at peak PS2/Xbox/GameCube of the gen.

The hype was insane. GTA SA, Halo 2, Half Life 2, WoW and the best game ever Metal Gear Solid 3 all launched together and it was freaking nuts.

The commercials and hype bro’s, never seen anything like it.

Ur probably mistaking the original with the enhanced edition. The original game is very buggy and have cencored sex scenes and some pretty terrible dialogue. The enhanced edition apparently fixed all of these(nude scenes, rewrote dialogue, new quest, etc) and have an overhauled combat. That one is very highly praised but is in 2008.

LOL, exaggerate more. DOOM 3 was neither a "masterpiece" or "total crap".

@pc_rocks Yeah, it was filled with jump scares. But it still had a good level/sound/graphics design and gameplay.

@ghosts4ever No, it wasn't especially great at horror. It was mostly jump scares.

It will always be 1998 for me. Zelda:OoT, Suikoden II, Parasite Eve, Half-Life, MvC et al...some of the best times gaming.

@Litchie: Yeah, gen 6 as a whole is probably my favorite time period in gaming, and 2003 might be the peak.

I'm judging the game relative to the period it belongs to. Why apply 2019's standards to 2004? Shenmue 1 and 2 were great for time but are now awful as Shenmue 3 shows.

shenmue 3 is ok. not crap.

It's garbage tier in 2019. The game that invented QTE and a boring walking simulator/full of tedious fetch quests - the thing that you 'supposedly' hate in other games.

LOL, exaggerate more. DOOM 3 was neither a "masterpiece" or "total crap".

@pc_rocks Yeah, it was filled with jump scares. But it still had a good level/sound/graphics design and gameplay.

Graphics and sound but not to level design or gameplay. The flash light got boring after a while. Total crap may be exaggerating a bit but it was a bad game.
