All the more reason for me to hurry up and play the 5 games I actually care about, and then sell my ps4.
If developers still release new games on the PS4 as well I don't see the problem. I don't think people will like it though.

I'd say quite the opposite, a 5 year console cycle with a refresh and then two years later the successor? That's suicide.
Lets not do consoles like smartphones, guys.
Unless there is a seriously compelling reason to get a new Playstation iteration (mostly games, price and features), I don't see it flying off shelves like the PS4 did.
While we're here, I do think one feature would be excellent on next gen consoles: multiple monitors. I'm not saying this because it would benefit gameplay, that's mostly up to a developer. It would open possibilities of having multiple things being displayed e.g. streaming and playing, chat/social media and playing simultaneously etc. Since consoles are moving into the desk as well as the living room space, this could be a good idea. Does this sound good to others?

That's why I did not buy the Pro
Same here. I was thinking about this very situation.

Well, to be fair, it's not like I exactly disagree with you here. But mainly I'm thinking about those that bought a PS4 Pro. I didn't. And I won't. So, from my perspective, having bought a launch PS4, a PS5 coming next year would be not so bad, considering. I'm okay with a 5 year cycle. I do feel for Pro owners though. I'm assuming the PS5, incidentally, will be muuuuch more powerful than the Pro, however--and likely will crush the Scorpio specs-wise.
The level of unlikelihood in this is through the roof, regardless of who predicted it. November 2019 is the absolute earliest I can see it.
I highly doubt a new playstation console is coming. They will want to compete with project Scorpio but I dont see it this soon. Maybe 2019-2020

Even if you didn't buy the Pro it's still a slap in the face, I mean look at the timeline structuring here.
The PlayStation 4 was available for only 3 years and subsequently upgraded to the Pro, something that is supposed to be a mid-generation update or refresh. A PlayStation 5 releasing two years after that wouldn't even have allowed the Pro to be mid-generation or mature.
2018 is just too fast for this, now 2019 or 2020 sure, but imagine if Microsoft released Scorpio and did the same thing and released a successor Xbox two years later, it would be viewed as insane. Honestly that is just too fast for a market like this, the Pro itself was even kind of quick at 3 years but at least it's staying within the boundaries of being a PlayStation 4.

I'd think so as well. 2019 seems much more likely, even early in the year as opposed to late 2018. We'll see, I suppose.

2019 would be better undoubtedly, so it might be then after all. Bottom line for me is that this mid-gen upgrade stuff going on between Sony and MS does not sit well with me. I think it's pointless. As for a slap in the face to original PS4 owners, no, I disagree. A 5 year cycle in my book is fine. A little short, but not terribly so. It's been a good gen from my perspective.

When the only reason a console manufacturer is releasing a better piece of hardware and nullifying a current generation to simply outdo something in its existing generation, that is what doesn't sit well with me.
Artificially ending the life cycle of a system to chase someone else is ridiculous.
Maybe a new handheld/hybrid, ala Switch?
In addition to the PS4 maybe. If PS went hybrid, I would be done with PS. Same goes for Xbox. I would turn into 100% PC gaming.
I meant as an addition, yes.
Maybe a new handheld/hybrid, ala Switch?
PlayStation Portable 2.
pls
@reduc_ab_: Maybe, but Sony doesn't seem to be a fan of hardware launches outside November/December. They haven't launched a system outside those two months since the PS2 in 2000.
Maybe a new handheld/hybrid, ala Switch?
I wouldn't mind a new Sony handheld, but if it functions like the Switch, no thank you. I don't care for gimmicks. Sorry, Charizard, I know you like the Switch and all.

That I could get on board with if you could have automatically synced games. Playing on the PS Pro at home, pick up the PS Switch for the road and pick up where you left off at a reduced resolution. Sign me up for that. I don't find the remote play of the Vita to be worthy, so this could be a great option.

That is precisely what MS has done (is attempting, rather) with the Scorpio.

No it's not, that console is not leaving the scope of the 8th generation, it's no different than the PlayStation 4 Pro it's simply a better executed piece of hardware.
Scorpio is to the Xbox One what the PlayStation 4 Pro is to the PlayStation 4.

Not for me. When I play on a handheld, I hold it in my...hands. I don't want to interact with a TV in that instance. To be more precise, I curl up in my bed with the covers pulled over my head (or lay in the bathtub with the lights turned off) and stare at the shiny little screen with earbuds in. Very atmospheric.
@kvally: The tech just isn't there for the x86 architecture to accomplish anything worthwhile in the portable realm right now. They won't have compatability between the architectures if they move to ARM, and even if they did the portable would be so significantly weaker than the home console that they couldn't get the same games. Not to mention, their console games are distributed on Bluray, not cartridge. In other words, the exact problem that Nintendo solved with the Switch can't possibly be a solution for Sony because they would have to abandon their existing architecture and platform. And to abandon their strength in home consoles for the portable realm, where they failed miserably, is unthinkable.
I'd imagine Sony needs stronger and stronger consoles as well to fuel their VR goals, assuming those are still goals of the company - and I hope so because VR is cool and requires more powerful systems.

But you can do exactly that with a Switch lol. You can use it as just a handheld and never as a console (and I know at least one person who uses it that way)
It would only be too soon if its not compatible with the PS4/Pro. We are now at a point where cross-play exists and works well. The generation line is obviously being blurred with the PS4/Pro and the X1/XScorp. We have essentially hit a bit of a closed platform of PC's (multiple SKU's playing the same game at different settings). The only reason why this would be a bit surprising is because of how well the PS4 and Pro are currently doing.
Predicting the slim is nothing impressive since there has been a slim Playstation console every generation. And the Pro was one of the worst kept secrets in gaming.

Yeah, but.....as said, I do not wish to interact with the TV--in any way--when I'm using a handheld. I'm odd, I know. But I tend to seek escape. And sometimes I wish to escape from the TV, un-tethered, if you will. Even if I'm not even in the same room as the TV, and even if a handheld is kind of like a little TV.

You are honestly trying to tell me that the Scorpio is simply an upgraded XB1. You're honestly trying to say that.

I'm not trying to tell you anything, that is what it is.
This thing being a more advanced piece of hardware than the PlayStation 4 Pro and much better executed has no dictation on its being, Microsoft waited, didn't rush this out the door and as a result created a better upgrade for the Xbox One than Sony did for the PlayStation 4.
It operates under the same standards and guidelines concerning the Pro and the PS4 in relation to the Xbox One.

I mean with its connectivity to the console. You see? I don't want console games on my handheld; and I don't want handheld games on my console. Technically the Switch main console is not tethered to its handheld component, but at the same time, it absolutely is. They are like a brother and sister that share the same toys. I want my handheld to be an orphan, a loner, with experiences that are entirely its own.
