Digital Foundry helps SW tech scrubs understand the PS5 to XSX tflop "advantage"?

A lot of SW users are confused about the hardware for PS5 and XSX and spreading a lot of misinformation. With that, It's good to have a neutral 3rd party deliver a break down without an agenda.

When laymen fans simply think 12 > 10 and their brains can't comprehend any thing beyond a GPU tflop rating and don't understand the all system components will factor into real world performance.

When Digital Foundry's opinion goes from as good a gold to uncredible fanboy arguments. 🤭

It all depends on if Sony can maintain those 2.2ghz GPU clock or not. If they can, which they claim the difference between XSX and PS5 is small and in some instances the PS5 will outperform the XSX. We have never seen a GPU ship with such a high clockspeeds not even in the desktop space. Games dont just scale in a linear fashion, for example a highly clocked Vega 56 is faster than a Vega 64 even though 64 has more Tflops.

This what happens when the PS5 weaker performance is hard to accept.

Even DF agrees, XsX is stronger. Glad to get the experts opinion.

Xbox does tend to have more flops than Sony, so this makes sense.

DF also mentions that because of the GPUs variable clock speed, that the PS5 would fluctuate between the original 9.2 they reported to the 10.2 mentioned by Sony, and they are interested in testing to see how well it maintains high speeds in CPU bound games

Sure, clock speeds can make a difference, but you need a door wide enough to fit all that data through. Sony should have gone 320 or 356bit bus with those high clocks.

That still remains to be seen. Yes, XSX has a stronger GPU but at the same time, it all comes down to real-world performance and with PS5 having a beast of an SSD does give it an edge. 50/50 both PS5 & XSX will have advantages over the other.

Its faster SSD doesn't make up for the GPU and CPU performance.

4K resolution needs high memory bandwidth.

@davillain-: This is where I think people get confused. A super fast SSD will not make a GPU or CPU more capable.

It can help it do its work FASTER, but that only translates into more frames or less stuttering.

The main benefit is game development where games dont have to be designed around slow HDD or optical drives.

A 2-3 TF delta would still exist, whether its HDD or NVME.

CU count will make the bigger difference here, especially if PS5 doesnt support VRS which Cerny never mentioned

I added it to one of the three threads about the PS5 reveal. I didn't want to get yelled at for cluttering the forum.

XSX's Gears 5 results have scaled according to TFLOPS which delivered RTX 2080 class results. MS hasn't revealed XSX GPU's non-CU hardware e.g. geometry input rate and ROPS unit count.

Vega 56 at 1710Mhz (12.2 TFLOPS with 56 CU spread) and Vega 64 at 1590 Mhz (13.1 TFLOPS with 64 CU spread) was configured with the same memory bandwidth and has the same non-CU hardware.

XSX's 56 CU GPU ASIC is a different class from PS5's 40 CU GPU ASIC. This is like comparing TU104 and TU106 respectively.

PS5's GPU is effectively RDNA 2 enhanced "NAVI 10" e.g. higher clock speed (higher than the Turing!, impressive for AMD GPU) with improved perf/watt and updated hardware features.

Seriously though, Xbox has a power advantage. They have higher cpu clocks and more CUs. While Sony's machine may be the most efficient at power consumption and data access, they clearly have the weaker GPU.

Secret sauce confirmed. Whatever cows - it's OK. 1) the kit is still impressive. 2) it eats current consoles for breakfast. A clear generational leap. 3) Sony has a very strong 1st party and 3rd parties will run just fine. So it's ok. The PS5 is weaker. It's ok.

the XbSX is so powerful, just like the XB1x, but games is where it matter and PS5 will dominate that court.

The XSX is a stronger box. Yes, the PS5 will see some advantages of its SSD, but on paper, there's no argument that XSX has the edge. Accept this, enjoy Sony's games, and peace will return to you.
