As a male i prefer female protagonists the most, always creating a OP female char in my action rpg's . Besides, fem shep (ME) ranks #1 in my book.

Well?

Don’t care much either way, usually create a make if you control a custom character, but otherwise I just play what the game hands me:)

Depends. In games with a character creator, i usually do because creating a cool looking dude is pretty much impossible. They all look generic af. In games without one, i'd play as Arthur Morgan, the new Kratos, Shepard, etc over any character created females.

Don't care for most protagonists. I usually prefer them to STFU so man or woman makes no difference.

I can’t say that I “prefer” it, but the change up is nice. I like characters such as Samus, Lara Croft, and Claire Redfield.

Honestly, as men who game, I don’t think we can separate the sexuality of the idea of playing as aesthetically pleasing female characters. It doesn’t mean we make a weird deal of it, but there has to be something occurring psychologically when we choose to play as Jill Valentine in the first play through instead of Chris Redfield.

It could also be that the male player identifies more with feminine characteristics of the female characters, or perhaps it’s a way for the male player to get in touch with his “feminine side” or something. I don’t know, really. It’s just interesting to consider the “why” of such things.

Depends.

Like the OG Lara Croft 1/4 where she's a hybrid of James Bond and Indiana Jone with tits. Just being a badass and not taking things too seriously.

The modern one sounds like a whiny college student with daddy issues who doesn't seem to enjoy the actual Tomb Raiding. With narrative dissonance of "OMG I CAN DO THIS, SO HORRIBLE", after she's just like... gave Ted Bundy a run for his money on murder count.

Stupid. Annoying. etc...

If I’m creating the character in an RPG where I’m making choices than I always choose male as that’s what I can relate to the easiest. If it’s a character created by the developer where I’m experiencing their story, I have no preferences.

Idenity (such as gender) is irrelevent, personality is important. I prefer likeable characters regardless of gender.

Don't really have a preference, though I do enjoy a strong female. Not like in a SJW sense, I just like to see females that are as capable as males. It's super attractive and appealing to see a woman killing monsters, and doing it with a great ass.

To be honest, most of the time I make a character in a game (like an RPG or whatever), it ends up being a woman. At this point in time, I think female NPC's are more interesting; males have just become stereotypes, more effort seems to be put into females (say what you want about that from an equality standpoint, but it does make them more interesting).

Depends on which female protagonist we are talking about. From the 90s and early 2000s like OG Lara Croft, Joanna Dark, Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, sure. The stuff they've come out with lately? **** no.

It doesn't really matter much to me either way. Depending on whether the game is more gameplay or story driven, it depends on whether she's actually fun to play and/or is a well-written character.

For example, my favourite game of this gen so far is Streets of Rage 4, and my favourite character from the game is the new girl Cherry. Not because of what she looks like or even how she's written, but simply because of how fun it is to play with her. She's a speedy character like Skate from Streets of Rage 2 and 3, but updated with SOR4's combo system. Because she's the fastest character, and deals lower damage with each hit, she has the most combo potential, which makes it incredibly fun to chain combos with her.

No, I don't. If that's what the designers want, that's what I play. But if I get the choice, I would always choose to be a man.

Depends, as i prefer agility over strenght, i normally pick up female since most developers tend to make them more agile, in games like dark souls, i first create a male then a female; in Monster Hunter i usually choose female because i think the end game armors looks great on female and in male characters they look like power rangers villains; and finally in games that you enter relationships like Mass Effect, definitely i pick up males because i feel really awkward trying to score with a male character.

I prefer male heroes. Especially since most female heroes today seem to be made by regressive leftist who go overboard on the feminist power fantasy. It's worse on games grounded in realism when you got a 130 pound chick destroying dudes left and right.

It's actually more entertaining if there's a supernatural reason why she's so powerful ie.( Bayonetta).

But most my favorite heroes in games are all Males.

If I make my own character in the game I usually play as a male since I am one. If I am playing a game with story characters you play as, then it doesn't matter if the protagonist is male or female as long as the character fits well with the story.

If given a choice I always create a male character.

Funny story though, I've gone through Mass Effect trilogy many times as a male and always played the good guy because I just couldn't get myself to do the evil stuff and be the bad guy.

Though I was finally able to do the play through being the super bad guy when I created a smexy fem Shep and boy was I a total biatch in that play through. ;o

My son laughs about that to this day. lolol :P

Good point. I also tend to prefer speed and agility over strength. And more often than not, female characters tend to be faster but weaker, while male characters tend to be stronger but slower.

In the original Resident Evil, they also did this thing where Jill is easy mode and Chris is hard mode. But then with RE2, they made Leon and Claire equivalent difficulty.

I like playing as female characters. I have no affinity towards either, just sometimes pick the one where the voice actor gives the better performance.

AC Odyssey was Kasandra

AC Valhalla was male Eivor

Mass Effect was femshep

Cyberpunk was female as well

I prefer anyone over the generic white male to be honest. Fortunately, developers have realized that not all protagonist need to be cut from the exact template.

As long as the characters are written good (subjective), I can go either way. E.g., personal subjective opinion, I dislike more or less every character in the Last of Us II, but liked Ellie in the first game; or I dislike more or less every protagonists in GTA V, but liked all others in previous entries.

In character creator, if there is any, I usually since Mass Effect 1 days default to Bruce Willis lookalike or some kinda of monsters (so, in this case, neither).

Right now I prefer female protagonists just cause I've played as a guy so much already and I'm a guy myself which makes it rather boring. Just need something unique or different from a main character.

Usually, in every thread that asks this question, there's at least one guy that comes by with the usual "a guy playing as a girld is weird". Where is this person?
