Poll Do you think the Switch can outsell the PS5 & XSX this holiday? (63 votes)

Yes 51%
No 49%

I'm going with Yes. Right now Sony and Xbox are bathing in attention with their next gen consoles, but I have a feeling Nintendo is going to announce some really good games for this holiday season. Nintendo has been good with keeping tight lipped about things until the perfect moment. Case in point: Paper Mario. Came out of nowhere and is being released next month. I'm expecting Nintendo to drop some big announcements soon, along with the rumored remaster of games like Super Mario Galaxy. That, along with the fact that consoles are probably going to be 500-$600. I'm not even sure if PS4 Digital will be $400-$450. Will be interesting to see! Your thoughts, SW? Do you think the Switch can outsell the PS5 & XSX this holiday?

Only if supplies are limited or prices for new consoles are above $499. If Switch has a new Zelda or some other heavy hitter it could. I was given a Switch for my birthday and have only played Breath of the Wild so far.

Hard to say at the moment.

The PS5 and/or XSX could be supply constrained at launch with the chaos this year. So far there hasn't been a single game on either console to really rally around either. Some very nice looking games but nothing really screaming "OMG I WANT A PS5/XSX RIGHT FRICKIN NOW FOR GAME X!!!!!!".

If i was Sony i would really be pushing for GT7 for launch (it's a proven system seller too and its been a long time since GT6). That would be the game where a lot of marketing would be focused.

MS have committed to no exclusives for the first couple of years for the XSX....that could hurt. They may still market the likes of the new halo heavily as an XSX game that shows off the new console while just mumbling that it also works on the X1X and X1.

Nintendo may have a big surprise too...it's early days yet. Hell the switch could still be supply constrained too....they can't make them (or ring fit adventure...seriously thats a silent hit for them) fast enough at the moment. It's very hard to out hype and shut above new console launches though.

At the moment i would say the switch won't outsell them though unless the switch supply is plentiful and the PS5/XSX supply is quite limited.

Yeah I think so. Nintendo could drop some big titles, maybe drop the price, or supply of the XSX and PS5 could be more limited then the Switch.

Considering variables of pandemic resurgence and potential economic outlook, it's anybody's guess. But it it significantly cheaper than competition, and has a strong and growing library, I think there's strong reason to think it can do quite well.

Yes. I'm expecting Switch to stay on top. The system has a more four-quadrant appeal than the other two and will remain a cheaper and portable option.

Nah, people like shiny new things, the hype around MS & Sony will be massive, the Switch will be an after thought unless its cheap, and Nintendo never sell their devices for cheap.

Yes if PS5 is supply constrained. Sony was planning for 10 million shipment but was rumored is forecasted lower 5 million shipment due to the Covid pandemic.

Its possible. The only thing holding these companies back is supply. It literally took me 3 weeks to find a Switch.

@osan0: I doubt there will be any supply issues, China’s economy has been reopen for months now.

The problem is likely to be demand given the global recession.

There's no doubt in my mind Switch will outsell both... maybe combined.

1. It's far cheaper.

2. More geared towards the family

3. Far more of them as new gens almost always suffer from a lack of supply to start.

4. Virus has constrained at least some of the supply.

5. Virus is responsible for laying off millions of people that may have otherwise purchased the PS5 or XSeX.

And that's without knowing exactly what games will be available for each system.

@crazy_chemist: I'm, might be worth reading about it a little if you genuinely don't know. The Switch is selling like gangbusters. The reply to you about 2009 was meant to indicate its current success - let's see, what were they selling in 2009... something that sold well...

Nintendo is doing fine

@xantufrog: right, but the switch to outsell these new consoles in this years holiday season with people making more from unemployment, no way. I can’t see that happening.

After looking at the sales numbers i didn’t realize that the switch sold that much in total, thats crazy. Thats right up there with NES and SNES.

@xantufrog: Launches of new systems i thought usually fly off the shelves, these wont be any different. And after seeing new console sales after every generation of a console releases, come on man. Hahaha.

They will sell more of these new systems than nintendo switches. Just holiday sales i am talking about.

Stop moderating your posts cause then i feel i have to change mine. Lol

Probably but it'll be tough since the new consoles will enjoy their launch-window popularity and sales. I expect Nintendo to have something up their sleeves to sort-of "counter" the console launches this year and maybe a mid-life console upgrade of their own next year.

There would need to be a large shortage of next gen consoles for it to happen.

Probably. SX and PS5 are going to be in short supply this year. I'll go so far as to say the PS4 may even outsell them. Next year though, all bets are off.

It's kinda hard to say at this point. Switch is on fire this year in terms of sales, so unless things drop off by the end of the year Sony and MS would need record-breaking amounts of supply to overtake Switch's current momentum, but at the same time if they actually have that supply then... maybe? If Switch has another 10 million+ holiday quarter though, it's probably not possible for PS5 or Series X to come close.

Even then though, Series X only has a chance in the US. In Europe it's next to impossible, and in Japan it'll be lucky to hit 10k.

It goes further than that. In the US they've sold more in the first 5 months of this year than any console in history. So, in the US it'll definitely be at least a close battle.

Nintendo's success this holiday season will depend largely on what their holiday lineup looks like and if they're planning to release a major title that will get people excited.

So far we know next to nothing on Nintendo's plans so there's really not much of a say right now.

It probably will... especially if there are a couple of big releases towards the end of the year (such as Mario remasters etc).

@hrt_rulz01: Do you think remasters alone can carry Nintendo this holiday season?

Rumor has it: Mario Kart 9 is in development, and it was originally going to be the major 2020 holiday release for the Switch.

Because of the pandemic many plans across the industry have shifted and it does not look like MK9 is on the table for this year anymore.

Unless we hear Nintendo's plans for the rest of the year soon, I can best expect 2020 might go down as one of the the weaker years for the Switch. 2019 was an explosive year but I'm afraid 2020 isn't going to match unfortunately due to all the circumstances.

Rumors at the end of the day are rumors, BUT some of my own sources have had a good track record of leaking stuff that ends up true. From the same source, they leaked a new Paper Mario game was coming out this year and that ended up being true.

Also MK8 is a Wii U port, and I can see Nintendo would have interest in building an authentic Switch Mario Kart game since all their systems have a proper installment.

No, I think people are more hyped for the new PlayStation and Xbox, and will be getting either one or both of those instead. the majority of people will flock to the newest thing to be a part of it as well.

It all comes down to the games.

There are plenty of things that can go wrong with the PS5 and XSX - launch price, launch lineup, marketing, supply shortages, etc.

Still, if Nintendo wants an assured victory, it'll need at least one big game for the holiday season.

The Switch has some fucking phenomenal games, so it's a possibility. Still, you have to deal with the hype, and Sony announced some bangers (not 100% sure about release dates.) MS is next with their July 20/20, so we'll see if they've laid the groundwork for some solid release titles.

If Sony announced GT 7 was coming at launch, that would definitely boost sales. Stinks we didn't get a lot of launch dates. Hopefully we'll get more info soon.

GT7 at launch, for sure. The way Poly work, i'd expect 2021, and at worst... Beyond.
