FFXVI falls out the Top 40 in the UK, but Pikmin 4 standing it's ground.

I dont understand whats wrong with FFXVI, how can a game this historic and of the AAA caliber fall off so quick? What did they do wrong? So happy to see Pikmin 4 doing extremely well in Japan and is doing nice in the UK also.

Warning, this chart doesnt include digital numbers for Nintendo games. Nintendo is still the only company to not release its digital sales numbers. Which makes all these games charting even more impressive.

Any time I hear a publisher or developer say something absolute like that--"this genre doesn't sell" or "people don't want to play this any more" or "there's no demand for games like this"--all I hear is that they just are out of touch with gamers, or they don't want to bother working hard, or they've sold out.

Any kind of game will sell. The question is whether or not you can make it viable by scaling your budget to the point where you can make it a good game, but not invest so much you need it to sell 10+ million copies.

I hope the industry is inspired by BG3 and doesn't use it as some sort of use like "Oh BG3 is the exception" like we are seeing some devs say.

JRPG series that were traditionally turn based that switched to hack n slash combat are trying to appeal to lowest common denominator gamers. Any game that isn't instant action with third or first person perspective doesn't hold their attention long. Also Final Fantasy and JRPGs in general target the console audience where these lowest common denominator gamers mostly are. If Baldur's Gate 3 released on PS5 first it would not do anywhere near as well as it is on Steam even if adjusted for user base size.

@mrbojangles25: Yeah, the best thing they can do is gauge their market and fanbase, this was a massive misfire on SE's part. Came out a bit too late too. As the Game of Thrones hype cycle has died out. Dark Fantasy worked for FF14: Shadowbringers but yeah... clearly not FF16.

Next time he makes random assertions. I hope he realizes that the most popular SE game on Steam lately was a turn based one: Tactics Ogre Reborn.

They could also look at how much bucks Nintendo is making with Pokemon and Fire Emblem.

It's worth noting FF16 began development in 2016, right after FF15 released. Back then, SE's decisions for FF16 made sense. The turn-based market was quite niche back then, ARPGs like FF15 and Witcher 3 were big hits, and Game of Thrones was very popular. So FF16 was designed with all that in mind.

But then in the late 2010s, turn-based made a big comeback with hits like Persona 5, Dragon Quest 11, Divinity OS 2, Pokemon, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, Octopath, etc. And there was also backlash against Game of Thrones at the same time. But by then, FF16 was already in full development, so it was too late for SE to backtrack.

If I had to guess what comes next for the franchise, I think FF17 could very well go back to its turn-based roots. SE should've got the message by now that fans are demanding a turn-based FF game.

Why are people still buying Grand Theft Auto V? Come on? You let Rockstar milk the hell out of you ( and your pockets) that easily?

You made so many good points here. I hope that Square-Enix gets their act together and make Final Fantasy turn based again. People still like Persona, Dragon Quest, and Pokemon and they are all still turn based so why doesn't Final Fantasy do the same again.

When you have a game as hyped as FFXVI, everyone buys it day 1. Hence why it was #1 for a bit and now not charting. Pikmin surprises me though. The rest of those games look like budget bin games. Still cool they're selling so well.

More incredible is Miles Morales still holding on. Game is old and on PS+ extra yet charting that high. Challenging belief that subscription service kills game.

To be fair, the Switch has hardly anything to play other than a handful of one and done exclusives. Hardly no 3rd party support and terrible online will sell its single player exclusives until the next console releases. Switch owners have to justify their purchase somehow.

@theam0g: I don’t buy into that weak sauce excuse people like to use when it comes Nintendo systems. For some strange reason people like to rationalize the fact that high sales of Nintendo games are because users are trying to “justify” their purchase of said system. You could argue that a sale of any game on any system is a purchase to “justify” them buying that system.

The fact that it has fallen off the top sellers. Even falling behind games like Saints Row and Forespoken, is not a very promising sign.

People simply put don't want the game. Even on the FF16 reddit, I saw people talk about how much superior Baldur's Gate 3 was to FF16.

Outside of Fromsoft bangers, BG3 is superior to every RPG released in over 10 years, so it being better than FF16 doesn't mean anything. Personally couldn't care less about FF as a whole, but comparing it to a magnum opus that is BG3, that's simply pointless.

God of War Ragnarök, held on better than I thought. Good for it I guess. Goes to show that online engagement doesn't necessarily translate to irl engagement.

It is funny they have been using that excuse so many times this year, whenever a Switch exclusive does well.

It may just be time for them to admit, that the Switch just happens to still have plenty of games worth playing.

That's why both FF16 and Baldur's Gate 3 are absent from the list. FF16 was only physical heavy in its launch week, before becoming digital heavy after that. Whereas BG3 is digital heavy due to being on PC.

The physical market nowadays only represents a small fraction of the game market. It's not a very useful metric anymore.

The first is probably found for way cheaper than the second. I'm not from the UK, but in my country Forspoken was already @ 29,99€ a while ago. FF XVI is still @ 79,99€

I take it that's why we barely see any $79,99 game on the list. The new price tag for games is not catching up and is actually slowing down sales of new games. I take it people like me are just waiting for sales on these games. Serves them right, I'd say

@vatususreturns: Forspoken was part of the Gran Turismo, Forspokan, and Lego game PS5 bundle pack. Digital games sold in bundles are counted on this chart.

forspoken 35 bucks ff16 70 bucks. sales price always out sells the top dollar games.

I wonder if the price increase has hurt sales. Everyone I know is waiting for it to do in price before grabbing it. Granted I only really talk to 4 people anymore, but it's still a valid question.
