Yikes! That’s a huge amount of workers losing their jobs. Lots of layoffs in tech lately, but with a $70billion acquisition potentially in the wings, seems like they have the cash to burn and protect their employees.

What say you SW?

Didn't they do layoffs late last year?

Not surprised considering the amount of worker they have, and with the big gaming studios they bought for Xbox like Bethesda, Activision blizzard... No doubt they need to start taking extreme measures, sure people lost thier jobs, but it was for the greater good of the company. Hopefully.

It's not needed except as a demonstration to shareholders they mean to be lean because it's a recession and all, not like I imagine such a move really makes much of a difference to their button line.

Lots of companies are doing this though though I think some others do it even if their profits are up just to save a buck for their executive bonuses... that and to up their stock price.

That sucks. Hopefully they’ll land back on their feet somewhere.

Unfortunately this is just a sign of the times right now. The big boom these companies had during the covid lockdowns is over. Then you add in the fact that consumer’s wallets are being squeezed from every direction with inflation and you get these companies scaling things back. Sadly we’ll see more of this in the near future.

Yeah, they had another big layoff last year, nearly 1,000. But this time it's 10,000, ten times as many as last year, and reportedly Xbox and Bethesda employees will also be affected. So much for a "big tech" with money to burn.

As someone who works in tech, almost every tech company is having layoffs, they massively over hired during covid.

yeah, and over optimism. naively thinking pandemic numbers were the new norm. seen it a lot, businesses drunk off covid profits, over spending on lockdown friendly services, not considering one day it will all end and if the economy tanks at the same time then it's a very different landscape. seen the "hypergrowth" buzzword a lot this past couple of years, now it's hyper belt-tightening

@st_monica: They are a publicly traded company. It doesn't matter how much they have in cash reserves, they have to try and meet their quarterly 10-k goals; which included profit margins. If they are missing on the sales side, they have to reduce costs.

They could reduce costs by not overspending on ABK as a start…

Microsoft, FAANG, and other tech companies are all doing layoffs.

Amazon just laid of 18k, Metal laid off 11k last year.

It's a little sick that some people are using this as some sort of ammo in SW. These are people who are having their lives affected in real negative way. They have families.

Those dollars are accounted for differently - one time reductions in assets for investments. Those aren't the dollars I am talking about.

Some people really don't understand how finances work and just spew random shit.😂

It reminds me of the need to explain why some why a football stadium is being built while another department is begging for a door to be replaced.

Lol ok Pedro, who’d of thought the green clown car driver would come in here to PROTECT Microsoft in support of canning his fellow “developers”.

Apparently Xbox can dip into MS coffers to buy out the industry but how dare someone mention to cut back on frivolous spending for its dying game brand. What a 🤡

Is it a coincidence that Bethesda chose to lay off staff at the same time, or is Bethesda not independent under MS?

I don't believe Bethesda is independent under MS.

MS rather spend 70 bill on a game company , then rather take care of their own. Now this is just sad

Others have said plenty on expected layoffs due to an uptick in hiring. I think MS put a hold on new hires last year.
