This should nicely bump up Xbox console sales numbers as well for MS. What say you fellow SW friends? Do you think you will get this new Xbox console? Will it be called the Xbox Series C or E maybe?

How are they doing the owned games thing? Publishers didn't allow Nvidia to do that.

You release two different systems. Now they're going to release three? That's just stupid.

@Chutebox: agreed for the most part but I think it has potential. I feel like the price is a bit too high for what it is. If they are able to sell it for $50 and change the design to something more compact, it would be pretty tempting though.

Well the controller is $60.00 normally (and is included). So it's $39.99 for the actual console itself.

@kvallyx: oh, then that's pretty decent deal after all.

Hopefully they release this soon, along with the gamepass family plan.

Trying to inflate their console sales numbers. How would this count as a console? May as well add Playstation TV sales to the PS4 count lmao.

Not really, aimed at a particular demographic. I'm not sure about the price though, that could be a mistake.

$99 with a controller🤣Literally desperate to have people on their sub services🤡🤡🤡

This is the most desperate we've ever seen MS. This is what happens when you have no games to offer.

This is a silly notion. Xbox has been available outside of dedicated console hardware for years.

Also....

PS TV is just Vita hardware - it can count towards Vita sales for sure. PS TV was such a good value for what you can do with it. Love my PS TV for old Vita, PSP, and PS1 Classic games. PS TV has nothing to do with PS4 tho. Sony made a whole new store and PSN account for PS4 and PS5 (which was dumb, but prob a way to double-dip on all those remakes rather than providing a way to play legacy games).

The Ethernet port is the most exciting part for me. I was worried for a minute that they were going wifi only. Its also a lot bigger than I imagined. We went from streaming stick, to a streaming puck, to what looks to be slightly smaller than a Kinect. But I’m not that worried about the size though.

If valid, this looks like a good way to push streaming and Game Pass into the mainstream..

I still think they need a $4.99 "streaming only" Game Pass tier.. $15 a month seems steep if you dont have access to native games..

Not going to happen. It costs MS more to run the cloud service. Potentially more data used to stream a game vs. a user downloading it if the user plays a game for an extended period. The cost of the hardware and electricity to actually run the games on their server vs. offloading that to the user's console. Then you have to still pay the developers regardless if the user is streaming the game or running it locally.

US internet is worse than ours, you guys still have laughable caps. Streaming will never work, and even if you do have great internet, it goes terrible the more people who jump onto the connection. Sorry, three pieces of hardware make MS a bunch of clowns and just confuses the dumb average consumer.

While these are important factors, you must also consider:

  • The monumental R&D cost of developing a consumer hardware product, vs adding more servers to a datacenter
  • The fact that datacenters are dynamically allocated compute, vs a static console product that needs to be replaced every few years.
  • Console hardware margins are not where the money is made

@Pedro: what is a realistic price for a "streaming only" device when the only streaming option is the highest tier of Game Pass Ultimate (which includes native gaming on both PC and console that you wont have access to)?..

I think it's a great idea that would sell like hotcakes, but clearly not for the traditional gamer that posts on forums.

I can see it blowing up like the Wii, where a lot of people have them but only use them in specific situations

$9.99

Maybe that price for the streaming service could be exclusive to the streaming box?

@goldenelementxl: so, in terms of marketing:

Xbox Game Pass.. Includes native game downloads for console for just $9.99..

And

For Xbox Series C customers, game streaming for $9.99 required as a minimum to use this device..

Sure, i don't doubt the greed and/or tone deafness of any company but that just doesn't make much sense to entice consumers to your "streaming only" product..

Streaming just isn't there yet to be the same price as native in my opinion.. But if Microsoft takes that gamble, that's on them

Currently, game streaming is a $5 premium over regular Game Pass.. Doing streaming only for $5 makes sense to me but hey, i don't run a multi-trillion dollar company 🤷🏽‍♂️

@Antwan3K: I feel like Xbox can justify the $9.99 cost to consumers. If you play a game a ton, it would be less taxing on their servers if you were to download a game and play it native, vs streaming at a high resolution for dozens and dozens of hours.

The $5 Ultimate premium price also gets you PC Game Pass on top of streaming. Maybe it’s time for Xbox to reconsider their pricing. Sure, the aggressive pricing model they currently have is incredibly appealing. They’ve also spent a TON of money recently, have to pay 3rd party publishers for the majority of the games on Game Pass, and recoup the hardware production and R&D costs for not 1, not 2, but 3 products. They aren’t gonna make that up by selling hardware because the margins are too thin. And they aren’t selling as much software as they used to because of Game Pass. So it may be time to start slowly bumping the Game Pass cost over the next few years. Or they can ride it out and hope for some spikes in membership. But for Xbox to leave so much revenue on the table, to try to prop up and grow a service that is currently responsible for 18% of their total revenue seems asinine. But hey, whatever…

@goldenelementxl: you're making a ton of assumptions..

I will say that i wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft decides to release a game streaming device that requires a $10~15 cost of admission to even use the device..

What i'm saying is that i disagree with that strategy and don't think the end-user value proposition is present at that price point.. At least not yet with the current technology..

18% Game Pass revenue for 18% of Xbox users who use Game Pass isnt asinine.. It's a fair breakdown of the service..

I might get one for my bedroom to give it a try. I buy all these things. Can it really be worse than Ouya or Stadia? I've got them all minus Luna, and since I have Prime I'll probably try it out as well.

$99 to not own your games and be stuck streaming everything plus one of the biggest markets in the world has a massive part of the market where ISP caps are still in place or you gotta pay quite a bit more to not deal with.

This cloud version is a total shit show and feels only natural for Microsoft to lead the charge just like they did bringing subscription fees into gaming by charging for online play and creating a storefront which enables microtransactions.

Can't wait for in 20 years we get to look back with rose tinted glasses on who cool it was just even just buy a game digitally cause at least then you kinda owned it.

I don't think they'll release it, I don't think the streaming cloud services can scale to a growing GP base. I have encountered a lot of inconsistent results with the streaming cloud service.

They should focus instead on a dedicated home network peripheral screen + gamepad to stream over home network paired to an Series S|X running locally. Maybe the Logitech Cloud device could do that, if they could update it to pair with local network device streaming rather than play via a cloud server.

UPDATE 11/10/22: Xbox has confirmed that the device on Phil Spencer's shelf is an old prototype for Keystone.

"The device on Phil's shelf was an old prototype of Keystone. Earlier this year, we announced that we made the decision to pivot away from the current iteration of Keystone and are taking our learnings to refocus our efforts on a new approach that will allow us to deliver Xbox Cloud Gaming to more players around the world in the future. We have nothing more to share today," reads a statement to Eurogamer.

Keystone, as the device was codenamed, was a small gadget intended as a device capable of streaming Xbox Game Pass titles to any monitor or TV screen without extra hardware.

Back in May, Xbox confirmed it was pivoting away from the Xbox Game Pass streaming box. It seems that Spencer was just leaving a cheeky nod to the past on his shelf, then.
