Only Nvidia's Founders Edition isn't being effected as it was pointed out by few Tech YouTubers and as such, 3rd-party Custom GPU's are only experiencing various crashes.

The problem is a combination of power delivery and drivers. If the cards are switching too fast, fluctuations in power stability can lead to crashes. Nvidia definitely designed Ampere with TSMC's 7nm node in mind.

This is why I never buy new hardware the day it comes out, I like for them to iron things out, update drivers, plus I can get it cheaper by being patient so its a win win.

This is why I still stick to consoles... rarely ever a problem and if there is, it's fixed quickly across all systems, since hardware is the same.

It's only crashing if you go over 1900mhz for the core frequency, which is really high as the stock is around 1600mhz for the FE ones. This thing is just overblown.

And not all the models are crashing. MSI's and ASUS TUF ones are doing fine.

I cancelled my pre-/back-orders (had 2 active from 2 different retailers) of an RTX 3080 after I watched the video and then read up on the issue. Will wait until they get their shit together.

So far it seems like ASUS are the only 3080's worth the buy due to being over-spec, unluckily for me, I didn't place an order on the TUF/STRIX card... bummer.

People actually didn't read the article and don't understand what they are talking about. Only the cheapest 3rd party models are affected and only if you overclock over 2Ghz the base clock speed.

I back-ordered the Asus TUF RTX 3080 on launch day, but still don't have it. I am glad I ordered that one though. However, I think there is more to the story than just the different capacitors. FE and ASUS cards have CTD too from what I am hearing. So, we will see what kind of stability the next drivers bring.

If people would have actually read the article / watched the clip then they would know that the crashes are caused by power noise when the cards reach a high enough overclock because of cheaper capacitor arrays that some of the partner 3080 boards use.

It still sucks though with this design oversight. Im glad I wasnt able to preorder one now and will wait to see how the new RX 6000 cards compete.

It's the components being used in some models that are lending itself to the crashes. The current issue likely dealing with the cards' capacitor layout. Some AIB makers have been cutting corners it seems. Not sure if these can be fixed via software or no. It's not like a lot of people have these cards, so now would be the best time to make tweaks before a full rollout.

As a note, the pieces are all rated with accepted max clock speeds and all of the crashing happens at values way beyond those clock speeds. This is only an issue if you are doing serious overclocking, and even then, it will only be an issue for the first round of cards, and even further still, this only happens for a certain selection of the AIB cards.

This is definitely one that's getting overblown because of how few cards are actually out in the wild right now. I do get it's a shit launch but really this isn't as big as forum goers are making it seem.

Seems to be unrelated to overclocking, if I read it correctly.

Seems to be a problem with the chip that it just keeps drawing available power to get to a certain clockspeed (which it shouldn't) and then the game gets killed and you get sent back to desktop.

You do know its the overclocking 3080 that's causing the problems right? The RTX 3080 will work just fine out of the gate without overclocking. I only overclock my GPU within 2 years after usage.

People should read this:

the problem is a lot of people are crashing without trying to OC at all, its crashing at stock settings from the manufacture.

https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/j11h22/manually_oc_your_card_and_having_it_crash_at_some/

This is a serious issue with these cards.

I don't own an 3080 (not yet anyway) so can't really give you an answer why there's so much damage control. All I know is don't overclock the 3080 until an update on the Drivers are available.
