Poll NX or PS4.5 - what are you more interested in? (62 votes)

NX 69%
PS4.5 23%
Both 8%

I'm very curious to see what the new PS4 looks like, but since I have a gaming PC, it's not like I'll be missing out that much. NX definitely interests me too though. The idea of a Nintendo machine that does 3rd and 1st party well would be amazing. So I'll probably have to go with both. What about you, SW?

I don't see how you can be interested in two things that don't presently exist and we know nothing about.

The NX. I can honestly say that, at the moment, I don't have a shred of interest in a PS4.5.

The PS4.5 is fundamentally just a repackaged PS4 clocked slightly higher- no different than, say, a New 3DS to a 3DS (except the original 3DS models were just badly made, so a New 3DS purchase could at least be justified from that perspective- on the other hand, the PS4 is a very well made machine on the whole).

The NX is a brand new console. No matter how it turns out in the end, it will be more exciting now. So I am definitely more interested in the NX than I am in the PS4.5, the PSVR, the Xbox One.5, or any other technology based on existing technology releasing this year.

No point in discussing the two when nether hasn't been release nor what it looks like. Sure I'm interested in NX yes, but I see no points in getting excited when I don't know what the hell NX is.

As said above, it's hard to say since we know nothing about NX and don't even know if PS4.5 exists, but I'd probably say NX.

They'll probably put a new apu in there. It would be a wasted opportunity to simply overclock it.

I barely use my PS4 as it is, so I currently have zero interest in PS4.5.

NX on the other hand I'm very interested in. Excited to find out what it is, and hoping it's something I want.

A new console versus a new model of current console already on the market? Really?

Should we start comparing the next version of the 3ds to idea that sony is coming out with a new handheld in the next 1-3 years?

I'd go with the brand new console, where Nintendo has the chance to not screw the pooch. It's a long-shot, but it may happen.

I don't know much about this PS4.5 story bc it sorta pissed me off. But I won't be buying one until it's $100 or so.

So I guess the NX it is.

Given that I rarely use my current PS4 as it is, I have absolutely no interest in a PS4.5.

New consoles, on the other hand, always get me excited, especially new Nintendo consoles, so I'm very excited for the NX.

I've been interested to see what Nintendo does with the NX since I first heard about it. As a PC gamer primarily, Nintendo is interesting because they always do things a bit differently and provide experiences that don't feel like just another version of something I can already play on my PC.

What's the real PS4. The current PS4 is actually the PS3.5. I'm guessing this is it? I'll go with NX for sure.

There's very little point with slightly clock higher PS4.

Exactly. Nobody should buy PS4.5 or XB1.5 (if they are really a thing) if they have already purchased original hardware. Show these companies that we aren't stupid, and that they can't get away with that kind of nonsense.

If console players wanted to buy upgrades every few years, they would just get a gaming PC instead.

@charizard1605: Never had a DSi. I did buy new 3ds systems though, as a collector of special edition versions. As far as practicality, it's a terrible idea that separates the user base.

At least Nintendo hasn't done that as of yet with the 3DS, because if they were going to do that, it would have been ideal to do it with popular titles like Fire Emblem Fates and Pokemon Sun/Moon for instance. Thankfully they haven't done that so far. I suspect Sony and Microsoft might put out a lot of titles that are only playable on the updated versions though.

There's also a much larger price differential involved here.

NX.. because it's new.

That said i'm curious, I want to know what this new Ps4 is before I buy the current model, since I still haven't bought one lol. I want the best possible experience. Who knows what it'll be, but if I can play Nier at 4K? Uncharted 4 60fps? Sign me up!

I do agree that there is a larger price differential. I also think that the 3DS being, what, 4-5 years old when the New 3DS came out made the difference versus a 2-3 year old PS4 or XB1.

All that said, I still think it would be a good idea to have a PS4.5 or an XB1.5- the difference is, I don't think these systems will have exclusives (at least, not right away) as much as they will have enhanced versions of all existing games- think of the difference in how New 3DS runs Smash or Codename STEAM or Monster Hunter versus regular 3DS systems, and you get the idea. Eventually, maybe, say, 3-4 years from now, a lot of games may shift to being PS4.5 or XB1.5 exclusives- but at that point launch PS4s will already be 5 years old, meaning they will have had a full product cycle.

The long and short of this all is, I don't see much of an issue with the concept itself- in theory, it could be great by allowing console hardware to keep pace with rapidly developing PC and smartphone chipsets. If handled right (i.e. minimal exclusives for a while, and offering multiple specs to developers for different levels of output), then it could even be a slam dunk. The question, of course, is- will MS and Sony handle it right?

The NX is more interesting by default. Anticipating Nintendo's next underpowered console with another useless gimmick will always be more interesting.

I don't know how they'd get older games running better, that seems far out there but if that is the case that'll be awesome. But the new 3DS doesn't help older games at all so I wouldn't hope for that.

Even still if games going forward run better it'd still be worth doing to make this generation last longer, I think they want another 8 year generation and they just can't do it with current hardware. I don't think there should be any exclusives for the new hardware besides a handful of games, like the few N64 games that needed the ram pak but no more than that.

Would you be interested in an NX made with the same mentality as the Gamecube or the N64 were? Or would you personally rather they go fully traditional?

I understand. But within those parameters, what is defined as traditional? I am sure the NES and SNES do, yes, but do the N64 and Gamecube reasonably qualify as traditional? (Personally, i think the Gamecube at least, does, but I would also like to know where you stand!)

@charizard1605: I don't see why they just don't call them "PS5" and "XBTWO" instead.

But yeah, I wouldn't fault anyone for not buying new 3DS if they already had previous versions of the hardware. I've been buying special editions of 3DS systems long before new 3DS was even a concept, and am admittedly stupid for doing so, but I just can't help myself. :P

Having said and done all that though, I'm just about to the point where I'm done with buying systems all together. I'm planning on getting a NX, unless it's a streaming device, at some point, and will always buy new laptop PCs (around twice a decade or so). For around the past decade, I've been squirreling away games just for this scenario. I don't really like where a lot of games are going these days, current trends, and am tired of getting less and less for the same amount of money, the hoops we have to jump through like paid online and dlc etc. Luckily I now have almost enough of my favorite games and series surrounding me to play and replay until the grave comes calling. So PS4, XB1, Wii U, PC, 3DS, NX (maybe), Vita (still buying digital PSP games for it) and all the previous systems I own will take care of all my gaming needs from now on.

So I'll continue to buy games for these and previous systems, but I'm not too keen on the future of gaming.

Indeed.

They do things so much different that getting hurt in the end. Who in the hell will give 300-400$ for a console that knows beforehand it might die in its first 2-3 years ( life support either ) . I know i wont , even as secondary. Renting is the only solution. Specially when 3 years old games costing full price also.

But your logic is valid overall

Well it would be nice to have some viable storage device included and not 32GB of memory which is the storage found on midrange smart phones. They can skip the storage if they decide to use non optical storage and I will be good with that. Trash all of the useless gimmicks for the sake of being different. The n64 controller was and is garbage. The GC had non traditional DVD and a arguably inferior controller. Give gamers a machine that is capable as the other 2 options with the leverage of Nintendo's recycles. This would make the platform a solid standalone and not a by the way purchase. I don't care about online functionality but the market demands it so a fully functional social network with all of the modern day networking features found in games. Non of this is far reaching; except for the non optical storage for games, so there is no reason why they can't have this for their next system.

With that said, I am very certain that the NX will be weaker than the PS4 and Xbos One and will include another gimmick to further isolate them as a real option. I could be wrong.

Once I know what the NX is, I'll probably flip to saying the PS4.5. But not knowing makes the anticipation that much more compelling.

Well, from what i understand, one of the things that Microsoft and Sony (and Nintendo as well) are actively looking at doing (and admitted to doing when they announced the move to x86) is to move away from discrete hardware generations, and moving towards continuous hardware platforms, not unlike iPhones. This is not a concept that i am against, and it does excite me a whole lot- I think it's a sensible evolution of console gaming as a concept, and I am eager to see it being implemented in practice. I have, in general, been a proponent of this approach for a few years at the very least, now.

I understand your instinctual aversion, here- to be fair, most of these companies have not given us reasons to trust them or to give them the benefit of the doubt. It is hard to imagine they would go about this the consumer friendly route. So I understand where you are coming from. But call it naivete on my part, as well as a central belief (understanding?) that a move like this could not work with a splintered userbase (could you imagine if each iPhone got exclusive apps that previous models could not get?), I don't believe they will look to cut older users out entirely. They'll make it as enticing for them to upgrade as possible- higher resolutions and framerates, maybe, or bonus features- but I firmly believe that for the foreseeable future, all models will play all games, with few notable exceptions.

Hopefully it happens in a way that you don't have to hop off the train!

I understand. But within those parameters, what is defined as traditional? I am sure the NES and SNES do, yes, but do the N64 and Gamecube reasonably qualify as traditional? (Personally, i think the Gamecube at least, does, but I would also like to know where you stand!)

I think the NX will be at least on par with the PS4 (maybe a little bit more powerful), but I am also completely certain there is a gimmick to it- my only hope is that it is not a disruptive gimmick that hinders games, like, say, the Wii Remote was, and is instead one that can be ignored if the developer/player chooses to, with very little lost (so, for instance, the 3DS's 3D, or even the Wii U Gamepad in most instances).

We shall see before the end of the year.

Indeed.

But I'll be honest, if they can't at least match a 2012 midrange specc'd console, then they need to really rethink their approach to hardware. As in look at not doing it at all.
