https://blog.us.playstation.com/2019/12/02/celebrating-25-years-of-play/

"On December 3, 1994 – 25 years ago this week – the first PlayStation made its global debut in Japan."

Wow.. time to celebrate 25 years of greatness. Congrats to Sony for their success and for continuing to be a leader in the industry. Can't believe I've played all of the Playstation systems over the years. How would you rank every Sony system, SW?

Here is mine:

PS1 - favorite game (MGS) and amazing JRPGs

PS4 - was going to put PS3 ahead, but I think next year will put it ahead. Could very well be ahead of PS1 at the end of the gen.

PS3 - only system where you could play MGS 4 lol

PS2 - never really caught onto the PS2

As for the handhelds, I don't have an opinion.

You?

Happy 25th Anniversary to the PlayStation. I got one at launch and enjoyed some great games on it. I was very slow to warm up to 3D gaming though and still preferred 2D games for the duration of that generation.

As for how I would rank the systems I would probably go with:

1. PlayStation 2

2. PlayStation

3. PlayStation 3

I have yet to get a PS4 but I would probably rank it as number 2.

Ps3 great all around library

Ps4 exclusives are ok, vr is nice, has a decent library when including multiplats

Don't much care for ps1

Congratulations to Sony & PlayStation! Here hoping more greatness coming!

My fav system is PlayStation 2 followed by PlayStation 4 & PlayStation Vita. PlayStation 2 due to just how much games released on it and PlayStation Vita is backwards compatible digitally with PlayStation Portable and PlayStation games. PlayStation 4 got Bloodborne, and Bloodborne is fking amazing.

PS2, PS4, and PS1 are all tied at the top for me (but in that order I would say.. if that makes sense.. very small margins, and could easily put PS1 in first for its RPG's..) PS3 lags behind for various reasons, but it's not too far behind. Neither SONY or MS have ever made a console I don't like to date.

I was into Nintendo consoles at the time. It was all about that N64: Banjo Kazooie, Mario, Mario kart, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, ...

I only ever played on PS1 years later. When I played Rayman at a friends house.

Still years later I downloaded some PS1 roms for my PSP. Absolutely loved playing Heart of Darkness on it.

And now, well now I'm happy I finally get to play classics like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro on PC.

PS3 had a ton of PS2 collections, which was handy for me because I never owned a PS2.

It also had the Killzone, Uncharted, Infamous and Resistance games. I enjoyed all of those franchises.

I wasn't really hooked by PS3. Probably because it got somewhat overshadowed by X360. Found better games there. I wasn't really interested in Infamous, Killzone and Resistance games, even though they are/were solid franchises.

PS4 and PS2 are my favorite Sony consoles by far.

I owned every Playstation except PS3. PS1 and PS4 are actually in my top 5 favourite gaming systems (with Megadrive, Snes and A500). PS2, on the other hand, in my opinion is probably the most overrated console of all time :P

Damn, I pretty much enjoyed all the Playstations, so it's hard for me to rank.

I guess I'll say PS2>PS4>PS3>PS1

Looking forward to more.

@R4gn4r0k:

Well, I loved all Metal Gear titles, all GTA games and Bully (couldn't wait for the PC version lol), GT4, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3, 4, footie games (PES), Soul Calibur,

I wasn't that much into Final Fantasy though.

I don't play that much on PS4 (no much time), but I have played Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us Remastered, Spider-Man, RDR2, and actually finished Uncharted 4 lol. I also have to finish Until Dawn. Bought the Nathan Drake Collection, but I yet have to start playing it.

It's funny how I got into Playstation, it was so spontaneous. It was the fall before the PS1 was released.

At the time, I was a huge Sega fan and planned on getting their next system. My big bro, however, should me some magazines and catalogs selling a new system called the Playstation. Never heard of it till then, and I barely recognized the name Sony. He convinced me it would be better and that we should get that, instead.

I nearly ignored him, but went with his suggestion and haven't looked back since.

I must admit, I've only owned Playstation systems for the last four or five years.

The previous systems didn't appeal to me at all - the PS1's best games were also on the PC, the PS2 had the weakest version of multiplats, and the PS3 had a heavily unappealing library of games.

Still, I was intrigued by Persona, and bought a PS Vita to play P4G. I bought heaps of other games for the Vita, but P4G is one of the few that I played to completion.

Then I bought a PS4 to play Persona 5 (great) and Bloodborne (okay). I played quite a few other PS4 games early on, but the only other series that really clicked with me were the Yakuza games.

I also bought a PS3 during a clearance sale, mainly for Persona 3. I never played it much at all, and the rest of the library still hasn't drawn me in.

So...I have to say, I never really saw the appeal of the Playstation brand, and I probably never would have bought a PS3, 4, or Vita if not for the Persona franchise.

If Persona ever goes multiplat, I don't think I'll keep buying Playstation consoles in the future. The main IPs just don't click with me at all.

Metal Gear Solid, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Abes Oddyssey THPS, Bushido Blade, Wild Arms, Tomb Raider and Final Fantasy series were my favourites of course. Happy anniversary PlayStation.

Great series of systems. For me, it would almost go in order:

  1. PS1
  2. PS2
  3. PS4
  4. PS3

PS1 days were the heyday of gaming. I remember going to rent FF7 every weekend from the local video store (hoping it was available,) but then buying 8 and 9 day 1 for myself. The PS2 is self-explanatory, and I just feel the PS4 did a better job than the PS3.

Thanks for posting this solid game basic.

Its incredible to think the "newer" console creators like Sony have had their consoles for around 25 years...25 years!! The ps1 didn't arrive here in the U.S. until September 9, 1995. I hadn't heard much about since it was before the Web became popular. I do recall seeing in person the ps1 and Battle Arena Toshinden and thought "that looks amazing". I was a snes gamer at that point.

I have only owned a ps3 but am aware that SONY and PS (and the Sega Saturn) changed gaming for the better by creating games that delivered experiences/gaming never found on home consoles before. These machines made gaming more of an adult hobby. Resident Evil is a shining example of this.

The Verge has great look back at the Playstations 25 bday.

Though I didn't get a ps1 I did manage to get a ps3 and enjoyed castlevania SOTN very much.

Kutaragi and his console are legends!!!

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of the God Of War games, and I played all of them, through the collections on PS3. God of War on ps4 is also excellent and in fact really surprised me. The camera perspective changed but the gameplay is as fun as ever.

Right now I think my favourite games on PS4 are The Last Guardian and Horizon zero dawn :)

The first PlayStation game I bought and beat was Metal Gear Solid , and the latest was Death Stranding at the 25th anniversary point.

Very fitting.

Here's my ranking:

1. PlayStation.
It had Crash Bandicoot, which was fun. They had other games pretty similar to Nintendo's. That was fun. I could forgive the crap controller.

2. PlayStation 2.
It had a few gems in a humongous library of crap. I could never forgive the crap controller, though. And it felt very dated hardware wise compared to GameCube and Xbox.

3. PlayStation 4.
Though it sucks, it doesn't suck as much as the PS3. Most games are focused on graphics and presentation rather than fun. Often do the games have better graphics than what the console can handle. And again, a crap controller.

4. PlayStation 3.
One of the worst consoles made by a big company. Not only were the games bad and couldn't run properly on the hardware, the price of the console was awful. And once again, the controller was crap.

It is a good time to celebrate. Sony emerged on the scene somewhat unexpectedly for many, and now they unequivocally dominate the home console space for good reason.

I have owned them all, but certain experiences stand out more.

The PS1 and PS2 undoubtedly have given me the most unforgettable experiences. So many games across these two are timeless -- and for it they have been re-released and ported across other platforms (even PS1 titles were ported years after release to PC). Other games on these platforms are still yet to have re-releases or . Games like brave fencer musashi, legend of dragoon, saga frontier etc. Capcom was going to release a Megaman Legends 3, but it was cancelled in part due to Inafune's antics.

Given this, here are my rankings:

PS2

PS1

PS3

PS4

Because game design has significantly changed in twenty-five years and this archaic button layout is inadequate much of the time.

@ezekiel43: Why mess with what works? Its sold 100 million systems (or close to it) so they've got to be doing something right.

Because game design has significantly changed in twenty-five years and this archaic button layout is inadequate much of the time.

Game design hasn't fundamentally changed since the PS2 days.

And the controller is basically an upgraded SNES controller, in every respect. There are no problems with it, so don't fix it.
