The new rumor on the block says that not only will the PS5 Amateur launch in 2020, but the Professional model will too. What do you think? Personally I think it is a good idea if they can do it. The only problem I think is how future proof will the Pro model be and can they really cool a console that may push RTX 2080ti power.

PS5 Amateur

8c16t Zen2 @3.2ghz

Radeon RDNA graphics engine 36CU@1800mhz, 9.8tflop, 16GB GDDR6, 4GB DDR4.

2TB hybrid SSD/mechanical HDD

Quad-layer UHD BD drive.

$499

PS5 Professional

8c16t Zen2@3.5ghz

RDNA2 Radeon GPU 60CU @1700mhz, 16tflop, 20GB GDDR6, 4GB DDR4, 50% more Ray-tracing cores,

2TB hybrid HDD

Same BD drive

$599

I'm all for this strategy and it makes sense given the expected specs and the cost associated. It would offer a base model for those who don't want the high-end features, (no 4K or 8K) or care much about graphics at this stage, and make it more affordable for a lot more people. While at the same time, offering the best for those who do.

Not everybody games the same amount or even plays the same types of games and given the advancements in tech, I think base model will be more than good enough for many people. That said, more options to choose from is always a good idea, but I will not buy PS5 on launch at all. I'll buy PS5 eventually, probably 2/3 years after launch. My PC/Nintendo Switch will carry me for several years to come.

That is stupid. Sony dont do that but instead, how about you fund Bloodborne 2. More bloodborne is always good.

Two SKUs... sure. They've done that before but I doubt it will be the "Pro". They'll probably do a mid-gen upgrade like they did this time.

Side thought... when did everyone's names become blue on the mobile version of this site?

Gamespot Staff done goof again and all the fonts are blue and no longer red/orange until further notice. Whoever done this needs to be FIRED!!!

@davillain-: i like the blue btw. On mobile, dark mode + blue color for names and links is a lot better. Hope it stays as options.

All this blue makes me notice how most of us have blue avatars so this place is very 2 toned.

Typically, with black/grey, you need to warm up the surrounding environment. Blue is jarring. Red/orange was far more appropriate.

It's not bad, just jarring, like I said.

This blue color is messing with me. It doesn't match anything else on this site and it makes it hard to read.

Anyway, I thought Sony wasn't doing midgen refreshes anymore?

RDNA2 Radeon GPU 60CU @1700mhz, 16tflop, 20GB GDDR6, 4GB DDR4, 50% more Ray-tracing cores,

2TB hybrid HDD

Same BD drive

$599

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.gamesradar.com/amp/ps5-pro-rumors/

36 CU at 1800Mhz yields 8.3 TFLOPS

RX 5700 at 1Ghz (4.6 TFLOPS) is like Xbox One X with 7 to 8 TFLOPS GCN.

RX 5700 mod'ed with 5700 XT's BIOS yields nearly similar performance. There's a reason why AMD locked down 5700's clock speed.

Both RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT has the same raster hardware i.e. quad prim units, 64 ROPS and 4MB L2 cache.

8 core Zen 2 at 3.2Ghz yields about 1 TFLOPS FP32 with AVX 2's GPU style gather instruction capable.

PS5's total FP32 TFLOPS would be about 2.16X per watt over PS4 Pro's.

Both PS4 and PS4 Pro has similar chip size i.e.

PS4's 28 nm process node 348 mm2 chip size

PS4 Pro's 16 nm process node 321 mm2 chip size

Xbox Scalette's E3 2019 reveal has an estimate APU chip size into 370 mm2 to 380 mm2 range.

There's nothing wrong with the specs for the first machine you have there as the peak of what a next-gen system would be, but the second one is just way over the top. That price isn't even close to what something like that would cost, and the feasibility and time frame of building something like that just isn't on your side. That could be a possibility for a Pro model maybe 4 years after launch.

The whole idea of a two SKU launch isn't great with the host of problems that could accompany it.

Bad idea if Sony likes money. Lots of people bought a PS4, and then later bought a PS4 Pro. Sony would miss out on these morons buying the console twice for slightly better performance.

As long as the price point is below $500, Sony wins next-gen again.

I hope they learnt from their mistake with $599 E3 2005 fiasco.

$400 for the base PS5 and $500-550 for the PS5 Pro is a good entry point. Couple that with a Sony Exclusive at launch (Horizon Zero Dawn 2?) and you are off to the races.

This is terrible, they are just going to release a pro pro half way though the gen anyway and I'm going to have to convince the better half for us to spend more on the pro model.

Didn't Apple do this just a few months back when they released 2 phones at the same time? I remember them getting backlash from it because they essentially released an inferior product on launch day, though, I think it was kind of cool of them to do it as well. They gave the consumer 2 options. One for the ones who want all the flashy stuff, and one of the ones who didn't need all the flashy stuff. Even though I would never touch Apple products with a stick because of their prices, it was still cool of them to do it. I think it will be cool if Sony did it too, but I do think that a pro model on launch day is probably a bad idea, for multiple reasons. The main reason is that technology is always changing. The point of a pro model is to upgrade your experience for new technology, the how the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro are there to enhance your experience into 4K. What happens 5 years from now when TV monitors evolve into flashier products? Wouldn't Sony want to enhance their fans experience by creating a system that would look amazing on that new monitor? I think they should wait, that way, when we hit that point in time where our monitors get bigger and require higher resolution and power, we won't be begging for a "Pro 2".

I like the idea. Don't offer me a weak version, then 6-12 months later offer an improved more powerful version. Give me the option off the bat whatever the cost. Too pricey for what it offers, I'll take the cheaper version...although not gonna lie, I'll probably take the dearer version, just because.

Blue is better than the old colour scheme.

I don’t like the idea of 2 skus.

I will buy the most expensive version regardless, but I think it is best to start with 1 sku when launching a new console. You want the consumer to not have to think too hard.

I don't think it matters. Different spec'd sku's at different prices, launching at the same time has already been a thing.

As long as they play the same games, power difference is insignificant. The consumer will choose the product that serves them best.

It's not insignificant to developer support and what the target system will be for development.

@Netret0120: Why do people think $600 is to much for a console? The PS3 launched in 2006 the PS5 will launch in 2020. Gaming consoles are not going to stay under $400 forever. People pay $700 on shitty phones that are worthless in 3 years why not pay $600 for a gaming console that you will use for 7 years?

Most people that buy their phones get them on contract and rarely pay full price for them.

You have to buy consoles at full price and PS3's price point is not too long ago that people have forgotten about how it significantly hurt its sales at the beginning.

I think a $500 price point is reasonable either way but I'm not sure about the general public. I'd be willing to pay $600 for premium hardware that will last close to a decade ( I bought a PS3 at launch with no qualms) but i am in the minority.

Because you can't do what you want with it, just games and media. It's a luxury item making it feel more expensive. If I'm buying a PC, I don't mind spending more, because of all the freedom to tailor the hardware and software to my needs and generally use it for what I want at anytime, even if it's less powerful than the cheaper console. I'd spend for example up to £800 on a PC and £250ish on a console.

While spending a lot on a phone isn't my thing, I understand why people do it, because to them it's a tool and a PC that they rely on 24/7.

Remember that significant portion of these consoles are bought by parents for their kids and more casual players who might pick up like a game or two a year at best. So yes the price is very important
