Well, it seems like the moment has finally arrrived.

After skipping the PC platform for 2 games, the red dead series has finally found its way to PC.

I'm quite excited to hear how well it runs and plays on PC. Rockstar ports have ranged from God tier (Max Payne 3) to shoddy (GTA IV). Personally I think first person mode could fit PC really well.

Anyone get their hands on it and want to share their thoughts, feel free to do so in this thread.

Personally I'm still waiting... for the Steam release :D

I pre-order it on Rockstar Game Launcher and got a free game with it. I'll give it a try at the end of the month cause I'm on a tight schedule of games releasing this month such as Death Stranding, Jedi Fallen Order, & Pokemon Sword/Shield. If this thread is still active, I'll return and pass my opinion.

For mods, I want an Erron Black (from Mortal Kombat) skin mod cause I always say he fits in RDR universe then in MK.

@davillain-: Saw some gameplay from a live stream and the settings menu looks really expansive and good.

I'll also be playing other games this month including Jedi and Age of empires II.

Can't wait for the mods :D

@freedomfreak: Imho the best looking open world games right now are AC: Odyssey and Origins. These are the games to beat. But I'm sure Rockstar is gonna nail the attention to detail. Even GTA IV still blows my mind in some parts.

You still game on PC?

I'll get it, but not at £54.99, be normalising it.

Which is going to happen either way, unfortunately.

Even Steam is sucking EA's butt helping push it along.

For me, RDR2 beats them. Like you said, attention to detail, AI interactions. Everything. It's beautifully crafted.

And yes, I do. Trying to finish up Mafia 2 before Death Stranding hits. Maxing out last gen games, and running them at near 120+ fps is cool.

@R4gn4r0k: Neither Odyssey nor Origins beat Unity’s graphics. Hilariously, the graphics got worse with each game following Unity.

Edit: Actually no. In graphics it goes

Unity>Origins>Odyssey>Syndicate

Yup, that's one of the main perks of PC gaming. Running older games on newer hardware and seeing the results. It's basically the same as buying a remaster. And I like how all your games carry over from one PC to the next. Which is made especially easy these days with cloud saving.

Uh, I'm not sure I can agree here. I do agree that Unity is an absolutely stunning game and still has the newer AC's beat when it comes to architecture and population density.

I guess 2015 was a good year for really good looking games (AC Unity, Witcher 3)

The game will be 60 euro for me on steam. I could buy it cheaper on say Greenmangaming or fanatical, but I'm not doing that this time. I really want the Steam version.

I still have some left over cash on Steam from selling stuffz (trading cards, ...) so that will lower the price a bit :)

Talking about older games, I replayed Battlefield 3&4 not long ago. Running it on newer hardware made for some fantastic results. Also, Battlefield 3 definitely has the best campaign of the series.

That's the one BF campaign I never played. I'll wait for a sale, because I'm pretty sure I don't own it.

Steam release for me. On controllers you smash A or X button repeatedly to run faster. On PC do you smash space bar?

This has been in Rockstar games for a while.

I replayed GTA IV recently: it was hold the key to run and smash it repeatedly to run faster.

So I'm guessing they'll continue this.

I have a copy for PS4, but I couldn't enjoy it because of the awful gun control, especially on a horse, with a controller. So I only progressed 10% of the game and quit until the PC version release. And this was the problem with the 1st game as well, aiming mechanics with the controller in RDR are just awful and it's impossible to play without aim assist. I will definitely buy the PC version to finally be able to enjoy the game.

I been playing it, it runs pretty good but not perfect has some little freezes off and on. It looks great aiming with the mouse feels so good. But the way screenshots are done sucks it isn't saved to my local drive it's saved to the social club and it's annoying making something so simple a task. But anyways rather then my few grips the game is great on the PC.

Thanks mate, I pretty much avoided every review, every video, every spoiler of RDR2 for a year.

Wasn't easy :P

Good to hear the PC controls are good :)

So this doesn't seem like it's a controller layout ported to M/KB, it feels like this was desgined properly for M/KB

I seen 4K benchmarks and RTX 2080Ti runs poor while in max settings. Bass is gonna have to twick those settings down.

Wasn't expecting to max out this game at 4K and get 60fps. It barely manages it in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Completely falls flat in AC: Odyssey and several other games. I could see it getting around 40ish fps at max settings+4K.

What's up with the blur? Why do devs do this?

Thank you, Nvidia, for giving us sharpening filters.

Seems like an okay game so far. Beginning is terribly slow, but not entirely boring.

@npiet1: I own a 2080 Ti + 9900K. I might be wrong but based on precedents, this combo isn’t maxing out this game at 4K maxed out.

@Juub1990: Yeah you're right from what I've heard on another site, I've also heard it runs like crap on other cards as well. It's just with all the 4k stuff rockstar has been posting about rdr2 you'd think the 2080ti could max it out at 4k.

I'm enjoying it, but so far it is a very linear experience. I think I might be at the point where the world opens up, but I am not sure. Was also surprised to see that after two hours I am already 8% done with the story. Seems like a short game in that respect but maybe not.

Anyway, it looks great. Running it at 1440 with everything at "ultra" or "high" settings. Beautiful game, especially when you get into the trees and green hills and stuff like in chapter 2. I might turn it down a bit though because it seems to run a little slow for some reason, even though it's only using 4.5 GB of my 8 GB VRAM on my 2080 card.

Playing in first-person is also great. A lot more immersive! Some moments are better suited for third-person (horse riding, for instance), but on foot, first-person is the way to go.

The start is relatively weak compared to the rest of the game.

also, its pretty darn long. probably the longest Rockstar game. once the game opens up there are loads of worthwhile side activities and missions. I remember the progress tracking stats being a bit wonky so I wouldn't read into that 8% figure too much.

if anything i'd say the story is slightly over-long and could have used some editing towards the end.

how does the combat feel in first person using a keyboard and mouse? (if you have tested it)

I just made it to chapter 2 as well, and this seems like the beginning of the actual game, while chapter 1 felt like a tutorial. Liking it so far, will enjoy it even more as long as it picks up.

I did 2 benchmark runs at 3440x1440 max settings with all AA disabled. One with DX12 and the other with Vulkan.

DX12
DX12
Vulkan
Vulkan

Vulkan minimum fps was definitely better than DX12, but this could change with multiple runs (min fps often occur during scene transitions). Sustained minimums that I actually noticed were in the 40s. Average and max fps were better for DX12. The frame pacing was definitely better on DX12 as I noticed less judder. I don't know if it is possibly an issue with how G-Sync works with Vulkan, but I definitely noticed a difference. I will try playing the actual game later tonight (in DX12), but I am going to play some BFV with some friends right now. Game looks great btw. :)

@BassMan: Do you have a g-sync monitor? I ask because I do; in this case, would Dx12 be a better option than Vulkan?

Also what is Vulkan, anyway? I saw it loaded up when I installed the game this morning.

My biggest gripe right now is the slight judder, as you put it; I might try Dx12 when I fire it up next, so far I've only played it under Vulkan.

Sweet, thanks for the info, good to know the game is lengthy.

As for the combat, it feels as great as any other FPS does. It feels more natural.

There are a couple things that are less-than-ideal, but not terrible; cover, for example, is a little weird in first-person but it still works fine, and horse-riding is a bit more cinematic and easier in third-person (in first-person the horse's head takes up some serious real estate screen-wise, and it's a bit harder to get your bearings).

Still, if I had to choose, I'd choose first-person perspective. In the end the game is an action and, imo, shooters are best played first-person. Third person might look better but it doesn't play better.

DX12 seems smoother from what I have seen. I do have a G-Sync monitor, but I don't know if that is a factor with the judder under Vulkan. I am not going to turn off G-Sync anyway, so DX12 it is for me. Vulkan is another low level API similar to DX12. It is derived from OpenGL which is a long time competitor of DirectX.

PC gamers know how hard it is to run 4K and know it is not realistic all the time. We don't blow a load over hyped buzzwords like console fanboys. Many of us are perfectly happy running at lower resolutions as long as the frame rate is high.
