He called us gamers "niche" and were a huge fucking market bigger than movies etc GTA 5 made more money than any movie ever.

He also betrayed Playstation by teaming up with Microsoft Azure a direct competitor.

Its time we need a new direction one that is in line with the PS1 and the PS2 and just crushes its enemies and doesn't call us niche or crap like that.

100 million PS4s sell in the course of 5 and a half years while 100 million iPhones can sell in the space of months. It's not like the dude was exactly wrong. You're taking some Japanese quote out of context and spinning it into something it's not.

They know their ship is sailing with wind from the gaming industry in its sails. You cant blame them for wanting to expand their horizons to a certain degree. Hence, the gaming movie studio thing and an emphasis on streaming platforms.

There's no reason for him to step down. Sony's generating record profits and he's doing a great job of transforming Sony into a much more sustainable business.

- Consoles are absolutely niche when you look at other devices and even other gaming platforms like mobile. (Sony excels at niche products / markets!!!)

- Azure isn't a direct competitor. And just because you compete doesn't mean you can't use their products and services or collaborate on things.

Ex. Netflix uses AWS. iPhones use Samsung screens and, Sony cameras. Microsoft develops software for iOS and Mac OS. etc.

I agree with the above whilst making record profits it's foolish the position should be in question.

I didn't read his entire qoute, but I wouldn't consider consoles(including Xone/Switch) selling over 200 million units a niche market. That's like calling the NFL a niche market.

Kaz Hirai was the best CEO that Sony has had in decades. Under Kaz, the PlayStation, Electronics, Movies, Music and image-sensor branches of the company all began making a comeback. So the new CEO Kenichiro Yoshida has some big boots to fill. But it's too soon to judge him. So far, he seems to be doing a good job of building on the groundwork laid down by Kaz.

Just for the record, Yoshida's comments about console gamers doesn't hold a candle compared to the insulting remarks that Nintendo's former boss Hiroshi Yamauchi made about gamers. He was proud of the fact that he had never played any video games in his life. And he referred to RPG players as "depressed gamers who like to sit alone in their dark rooms and play slow games." Yet Nintendo, and the game industry as a whole, owes a lot to Yamauchi. He was a very effective businessman, and that's what matters most.

Consoles are dying my friend. Tbh, PC gaming will probably die too, but cloud gaming actually has a real chance of becoming something? Idk. I like to think so Times are changing, and traditional gaming is affected by them.

People complain about not owning their games nowadays, but at the same time, no one cares to buy physical media. Especially on PC (People are buying in mass on places like Steam, Origin, and Ubisoft Store.), no one really cares about the actual physical ownership of a copy. It was never really important if you wanna be honest. Convenience is what sells. No more downloading games play instantly as soon as buy them, don't have to worry about hard drive space. Gaming is niche but there are directions that companies can take to reduce the cost of gaming by cloud gaming. Gamers gonna game regardless.

I don't quite agree with the "niche" usage, but I still understand what he was trying to get at. Talking to investors, he wants to emphasize the importance of streaming, seamlessness and immersion next gen. And that's going to involve putting more energy into different areas than last generation. Hence why he wanted to look at the bigger picture (there be money in streaming services!), and not just repeat the same traditional methods as before. He wasn't making fun of console owners or Sony itself in that interview (obvious to anyone who read it).

Now, if he constantly said weird crap and lead Sony down multiple bad roads, then I'd call for his resignation. But so far I haven't seen him blunder the way the previous Xbox One director did (Mattrick), who didn't even look like the kind of guy into video games at all.

When console gaming makes up less than 25% of the market revanue, yes it certainly isn't the biggest player. Even if it is increasing (likely as its finally catching up with service based games).

Desperate Sony fans are not seeing the big picture.

PUBG's audience grew 150-200 million as soon as it went to android. Some of these singular games earn more than the entirity of the exclusive library of a console in 1 year.

Gating games behind £300 devices + periperals + subscripts and having to make games for 6 year old hardware aare going to become "niche" concepts in the next few years... they are going to be replaced by people paying £10 a month to play 100s of games without only slightly decreased image quality. On any device, be it thier TV, Monitor, Phone, Projector.

PSNOW is a solid proof of concept. With the weight of Google, Amazon and Azure ... this is the future.
