https://www.gamespot.com/articles/sony-mentions-ps6-release-year-if-only-this-document-werent-redacted/1100-6509450/

In one of its latest CMA responses to Microsoft's planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard (spotted by games industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls), Sony has mentioned its next generation of PlayStation consoles and how potentially losing access to the Call of Duty franchise would have major repercussions on its profits. While the brief line of text doesn't mention an exact date due to a redaction in it, it does confirm that Sony has a new PlayStation planned for a future release, possibly by 2027 or slightly later.

"Microsoft has offered to continue making Activision's games available on PlayStation only until 2027," Sony's comments read. "Likewise, in public comments just on October 26, Microsoft said that it plans to offer Call of Duty on PlayStation only as long as it makes sense. A period until 2027--or some other (possibly shorter) time that Microsoft unilaterally determines makes sense to Microsoft is badly inadequate. By the time that SIE launched the next generation of its PlayStation console (which is likely to occur around REDACTED), it would have lost access to Call of Duty and other Activision titles, making it extremely vulnerable to consumer switching and subsequent degradation in its competitiveness."

PlayStation consoles typically have a shelf life of 6-7 years, and the current model, the PlayStation 5, celebrated its second birthday this month. It's not unusual for Sony to be focusing on a PS6 console at this stage in the PS5 lifecycle either, as constant console research and development is something that is practiced by both Xbox and Nintendo.

Thoughts, SW? This makes me think we’ll have a mid-gen refresh if we’re going to be waiting that long for the PS6.

With how weak the PS5 is, I expect the PS5 Pro 2024 and then PS6 2026.

That sounds about right. I actually expect PS6 to be hitting stores in 2030 to say the least and the same for next-gen Xbox.

The timeline seems consistent with their normal cycle, so probably. I wouldn't put it past them to do a mid-gen sku, but I still don't care for the practice. I still prefer the idea of a new console being a "leap" in quality and function, but diminishing returns have probably made that a moot point. How well did the PS4 pro sell, versus the normal one?

I'm curious to see what they would add to PS6. Besides incremental upgrades (ram, hdd, gpu, processor) what would they add? And what's the point, when 99% of what's being played is low demand titles like GTA V, Minecraft and Rocket League?

What features would you like to see in the PS6?

Perhaps but a lot can happen between now and then. Probably going to get a mid-gen refresh though.

2027 is too late. 2025 would be better. These consoles already struggle with RT and that is the future.

1. The xsx isn’t that much more powerful. If you’re comparing the ps5 to a powerhouse pc, then sure but the xsx isn’t that much more powerful to call the ps5 weak. In hindsight, the xss is MUCH weaker to the ps5 than the ps5 us to the xsx.

2. Aren’t you a Nintendo fan?

Can't wait for 10th gen games to cost $80 and watch corporate fanboys defend the price.

So, stable performance is what you want? Nothing innovative or ridiculous, like a detachable waffle iron, or a goddamn music visualizer (like PS3 had)?

By then, the SSD will be fully optimized and its power will be fully unlocked to the public.

Imagine the performance of games by then lol. Literally Switch 2.0.

"That long"? 2027 is only 4 years away and so far there really isn't anything to play this gen. This gen needs to last well into the 2030's. Give these developers time to release their games. They've all been struggling ever since lockdown. And now every pansy employee that works from a computer wants to work from home. The lack of productivity is starting to show.

Working from home makes you more productive. You can work whenever and wherever you like. Working in the office constrains you to the office.

10yr life cycle is pretty much the norm since 7th gen started and I don't see why this would be an issue for any gamer as long as developers continue making good games, no need to rush next-gen. I'm pretty much happy where we're at but I'm speaking myself on the subject.

I wouldn't mind a 10 year lifecycle for PS5 and Series S/X. It would certainly give developers more time to push the systems to their fullest potential and not rush out games to meet the deadline. It definitely feels like there's nothing worth playing cause of developers making games for last gen systems.

Used to be you got new systems ever 5-6 years now it has started to be more like ever 6-7 years. 7 would mean late 2027. 2026 or 2027 sounds about right for a ps6 but considering how it took longer than normal for people to get a system thinks to covid and shipping issues and such I do wonder if they will take longer to come out with new systems. Normally its hard to find a system for about 3-4 months. The system has been out 2 years and is only starting to be hard to not find now. Heck before friday I had never seen a ps5 in stock be it in store or online be it Best Buy, target, amazon etc always just sold out. Saw 1 ps5 on friday at Best Buy was shocked and saw target had some like sunday. With people having to wait a little longer to get systems also means sony having to wait a little longer to make money that will be made from game sales, controller etc. Also just about ever game sense 2020 has been delayed at least once if not 2 times. Basically everthing has likely been effected by a year things to covid. Because of that its taking longer for companies to make there money back from the cost to make the game because you cant make back say a 50 million dollar budget back for a game untill a game is out. So I could see a ps6 being out in like 2028 instead of a more normal 2026-2027.

@SolidGame_basic: I don't think there will be a PS6 because console generations are over. They can call it what they want going forward, PS5 pro, PS6, PS6 supergrafx, it will just be an upgrade every few years going forward.

I think ps6 will be able to do full 4k at 60 fps right a now a lot of games do dynamic 4k to get 60 fps or do like 1440p-1800p to get 60 fps. Maybe ps6 will be able to do some kind of 8k gaming even if its at 30 fps. Maybe we can get 4k at 120 fps. I am not really sure. Yes I agree about the new consoles being new gen verse getting mid gen because with new gen you get new games where mid gen you dont and also if you want to get the newer hardware it cost more to get one ever 3 years or so compared to ever like 6-7 and of course if you get a new consoles ever 3 years compared to ever 6-7 the upgrade will seem more impressive. Like say the pro didnt happen than ps5 would have been first taste at all of 4k unless you played on pc.

We always get a lot of cross gen games the first few years because companies dont want to leave a console with like 100 million for one with only like 20 million but I think the bigger issues is how covid basically pushed everthing back like a year when it comes to release. So we are just past 2 years into this gen but covid has basically made it so that games that are just coming out would have likely be out around year 1. So maybe just have a little longer gen like ps6 in 2028 instead of 2026-27

Cross gen outside of sports games will likely basically end next year or at least 2024 and ever gen has cross gen games so just because a ps6 comes out in 2027 dosnt mean it will not get any games in 2028 or even some in 2029.

@zeldabotw2: Man, if that's all they have left to offer, I might officially be done with modern gaming. That just sounds so boring.

I also saw my first PS5 in the wild last week. There were 5 of them, but they still don't have anything I want to play.

Does 8k even matter on standard size TV's? I thought the benefits only really mattered with giant TV's. But what's next? 16k.. 32k? 300fps.. 600? Have we hit the end of the road with visuals? What will people fawn over when it's as good as it gets?

The consoles are the equivalent to a meh PC from 2017-2018. They were being smoked by PC’s when they launched in 2020, and things have gotten worse since. Every 18 months the gap is going to widen 2X+. The reason we saw the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X is because tech moves so much faster than console generations.

With 8k and 16k and such I am not sure but I have heard that human eye can only pick up like 8k or 12k and after that the human eye cant tell the difference. I think we are still a long way from hitting a road with visuals. Untill we get to the point where we cant tell a game from real life graphics can always get better. Some movie CGI you cant tell its CGI even than not all and movie CGI is ahead of games. Also animations can still improve things like running animations and such can be improved. FPS I think a lot of people would love 120 fps at 4k. Right now to get like 120 fps resolution has to normally be brought down to like 1080p or 1440p. Also being able to have ray tracing at 4k at 120 fps too.

At the end of the day the most important thing is games to be fun and games don't have to keep looking better and better to play I can still go back and play older games like DK2 for example. With ps5 I think ratchet and clank is a must play game and spiderman 2 is next year also must play game to. It's also nice to get the better version of games that are cross gen and the fast load times we get now. Also the ps5 controller is interesting and could be a game changer. We have had rumble in controllers sense N64 and its basically always been the same even with switch. Before ps5 came out I thought the whole ps5 and triggers and such talk was going to be some over hyped thing but its not. After playing astro bots it could be a complete game changer but so far astro is the only one that has blown me away with that. A few other games had some cool moments with the controller but not at the amazing level of astro bot.

Well PC is always going to be above consoles because PC you can just upgrade things ever year in it if you want where console you cant and also console is going for a much cheaper level and consoles are plained out a good amount of time before they come out so a console that comes out in say 2030 is not going to have 2030 tech in it and from what I have heard this gens consoles at the start where closer to pc than last gen consoles where compared to there pc at there time. So sounds like last gen was worst when it comes to power. Also you had wii that was basically gamecube but with motion controls not much of a power upgrade sale over 100 million and also switch may end up being the most sold system ever and its very under powered compared to other consoles and crazy under powered to pc.

That's still shit. By 2027, we'd only have had 4 years of current gen gaming. We've just wasted two years on cross gen gaming.

They need to come out and say, "we're really not doing generations anymore". Then we can change our expectations. Right now, with "generations", comes the expectation of "next gen experiences".

That’s a long ass time to be sitting on low end hardware from 2018…

?

??

The consoles are the equivalent to a meh PC from 2017-2018. They were being smoked by PC’s when they launched in 2020, and things have gotten worse since. Every 18 months the gap is going to widen 2X+. The reason we saw the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X is because tech moves so much faster than console generations.

When are consoles not going to be getting smoked by PCs? They will only ever be able to afford to put mid - low tier GPUs in consoles.

And it doesn't feel like a long time considering how much time we've been wasting on cross gen games. GT7 for example should have looked literally 2 or 3 times better than that and been a far more advanced simulation, but it was designed for the PS4 first.

@zeldabotw2: Yeah, I hear ya, but none of that interests me. I guess once realism is achieved, that's when VR will become our new reality.

I pretty much only like old games anymore. Last gen was the least amount of fun I've had with gaming, and this current gen isn't looking any better. So expecting something different from next gen probably qualifies as insanity. There are tons of old games I never got around to. Maybe my next love is just sitting there, waiting for me.

We always get a lot of cross gen games though. So same has ever gen. A few years of cross gen and than a few of games only for the newer console and than a new console comes out and the few years of cross gen start again. The problem was that sony gave the impression that GOW Ragnark, Spiderman miles Morales, Horizon forbidden west, GT7 where all going to be ps5 only. That is 4 games if they had been ps5 only it would be like the most loaded start to a console ever it was basically false advertisement.

Usually for the first year or so, but now it's nothing but cross gen games. If it was a mix, sure, and I get it, if a last gen console can handle the game, why not.

To be honest, at this point I'm frustrated with it. Not even just the graphics, but the CPU. The Jag CPU sucked when the last gen consoles were released, and they're STILL the base for most games.

VR could be another thing has that puts you like more into the game. I have never had VR tried meta quest 2 for first time at friends on July 4th beat saber was really cool and now PSVR 2 with call of the mountain coming out I am interested in PSVR 2 but never got the invite email from sony hoping it will go up soon to pre order on Best Buy, amazon etc. I guess I am different I thought last gen was pretty good and I think this gen is off to a very strong start but I also have a big backlog at the same time lol. I still have ps3, ps4, wii, Wii U, switch games I need to play plus some ps5 games. I will never not have a backlog only would be possible if I could retire right. now at 33 and just do what I want 24/7.

while I guess that is some what far because we have only had like a few games that are not cross gen or a remake. I do think that is going to change majorly in 2023 though and I also think covid kind of put everything off by like a year.

I'm hoping they're still making games for ps4 when ps6 comes out! Why not?! There are few if any advancements to game design that require more powerful hardware, so keep it coming on ps4!

Also, isn't God of War Ragnarok a ps4 game if it sold more there rather than ps5?

There is no reason the Xbox One can't be getting games for a long time to come for example.

As long as they don't hold back the AAA games.

Perfect timing for The Elder Scrolls VI and they better start using the Hall Effect Joysticks in the PS6 controller.
