Apparently, sales of the headset are bad and inventory is piling up as units go unsold.

I haven't used one, but for those who do... what's the problem? Bad design? No games?

I warned all my local cows in the official launch thread. Nobody listened. Now suffer with your $550 waste of space headset, telling yourself you'll be using it on pc.

Well, we know the rabid fanboys would be avoiding this thread like a plague.😂

So much for Sony supporting the PSVR2.

Having no games makes it difficult to sell the hardware. And while upcoming PC support is nice, it’s not enough to sell headsets now. PlayStation has had this weird inability to market and support their products outside of the main console line. I’ll never understand it

Instead of unifying software they all chopped it up into their own greedy little fiefdoms happily at the expense of the consumer giving it absolutely no air room to breath.

Valve being the exception.

Sony (and all others, to be fair) should have been supporting VR as a whole instead of practicing their bullshit "walled garden" stuff again.

The VR playerbase is too small in its totality to carve up right now.

Establish the medium, let it grow organically, continue to develop your own hardware, then maybe in 10 years we can divide it up into proprietary markets.

Beat me to it. They killed it by doing their usual bullshit before the market could support it. They obviously have not heard or don't believe in "a rising tide lifts all ships".

Love Valve. When they made Alyx, they bought every single VR headset on the market to make sure it would work with them all (provided the hardware was compatible).

Would've sold more if they developed it in a way that supported older games, especially if they weren't going to invest in making any themselves.

Sony should've just made an AR headset and incentivized devs to support it like they do with the Dual Sense features.

NEVER!

Sure, I might only use mine maybe 100 hours a year. Sure, it was expensive. Sure, it's not perfect. Sure, sometimes games don't work well on it. Sure, it can be awkward to use.

BUT DAMMIT! I WILL NOT THROW IN THE TOWEL!

550 dollars.... My god what a ripoff. The worst part is some cows allowed Sony to do thus to them twice and will gladly get in line to do it again... Can't imagine being so frivolous with my cash flow.

Especially when they have no plan for sustainable growth. It's almost like Sony grabs the trend and tosses it out there and prays something good will just happen, rather than critically think about how to support customers buying their product.

Hopefully this means I will be able to get one at a discounted price soon :) There are a lot of good games released on it and I believe it will continue to get supported, even if that support doesn't come directly from Sony.

If the PS5 Pro rumors are true wouldn't it make sense that Sony would be pausing PSVR2 production to free up resources for PS5 Pro production?

If they release a PS5 Pro it should boost PSVR2 sales like how PS4 Pro boosted PSVR numbers.

@OmegaBlueUp: So you say there are a lot of good games for it, yet won't pony up the money for it unless it gets discounted.

You really think third party devs are going to make games for it even though Sony refuses to?

I bought the original PSVR. When the second was announced, I knew better than to buy it at launch. Sony has a bad habit of not supporting their promising pieces of tech with proper software support. With the franchises they own, it is simply unforgivable.

That said, RIP the greatest handheld ever made, the PS Vita.

@last_lap: yes. I am a very cheap gamer due to having little free time and being the sole provider of a family of 4. Most of the time I don't get a game until it is 70-80% off.

As for third party developer support, yes I think developers would still support it. Third party developers carried the original PSVR and it was still seen as a success by Sony.

I also suspect that there will be a slight revision to the PSVR2 similar to what they did with the PSVR. Perhaps this is another reason they halted production. Hard to tell unless Sony says something.

@OmegaBlueUp: I can respect your reasoning for waiting for sales and the like as family always comes first.

Sony can't rely on third party devs to develop for it VR though. First Cintact closed its doors recently, and they made a VR game exclusively for Sony's device.

VR as a whole is not viable for a studio, Sony abandoning it's own device within a year on the market won't encourage devs to make games for it, and especially if they have put production on hold. Not only that the last reported sales of the PSVR2 was at 600k, devs can't make money off of that, and don't forget VR games tend to be on the cheaper end, so again profits would be extremely hard to come by.

The PSVR2 is all but dead which is probably for the best.

@last_lap: I don't think it's all but dead though; it has nearly 200 games on it in its first year. It was selling quicker than the PSVR (last time Sony reported), and the quality of games are arguably better than what the PSVR had for its time.

Could Sony be doing more/better, of course. The same could be argued about their PS5 support. Sony has like 20 studios and we know little about what any of them are making.

As someone who owns PSVR 1(sold now) & 2, and meta quest 2&3, I prefer meta quest 3. Sony hasn’t released much for it but 3rd party has. Nearly every game on meta is also on PSVR 2. If PSVR 3 has OLED, eye tracking, pancake lenses, decent pass through for AR and wireless, I may get it.

@OmegaBlueUp: Sony may have 20 studios, but I'm willing to bet none are making VR games, it was reported that 12 of Sony's studios were making live service games. So there would be none making VR games. When it's reported that they have halted production and have no games in production, that's a death sentence for any device, couple that with VR is niche and yeah all but dead.

The fact that PSVR2 costs more than an actual PS5 is what truly killed its impact for most gamers out there. Not having backward compatibility with PSVR1 or PC support was the nail in the coffin.

@last_lap: I would be surprised if there are no PSVR2 games in development by Sony; there has been rumors of a Twisted Metal VR game for quite some time, Astro Bot has big VR roots so I would guess the next one would be on PSVR2, and with the praise GT7 got from its VR mode it would make a lot of sense other games could have a VR mode.

Also, it's not uncommon for studios to have multiple teams working on games in various stages of development.

@OmegaBlueUp: All I will say is that Sony's track record when it comes to making VR games is pretty much non-existent.

Not only that Sony's track record on every one of its devices, not named Playstation is appalling.
