Poll The time has come. SW's favorite open world game. (99 votes)

Fallout 3 1%
Fallout 4 (lul) 3%
Fallout New Vegas 5%
Elden Ring 12%
Oblivion 5%
Skyrim 5%
BOTW 8%
TOTK 13%
RDR2 5%
RDR1 1%
TW3 9%
GTA San Adreas 2%
GTA5 3%
Stalker 1%
MGS5 2%
Halo Infinite (oof) 8%
Other (specify) 16%

No more beating around the bush. Its time to name your fav open world game.

If it wasn't for the garbage mini dungeons of Elden Ring, ER would've crushed everything, but since they were a big part of the game, Fallout New Vegas is still the king of open world games for me.

Other: Just Cause 3 or 4. Now people will be like WTF, but you need to play in its open world with the tethers (once you unlock all of them) and that's where it really starts to shine because of the things the tethers allow you to create, it's fun, plain & simple, can't say that for the majority of open world games.

What Just Cause offers is nothing else but chaos. Chaos is like playing GTA3 with cheats, fun for 1-2h, and then the fun is gone. JC has no meat on the bone.

I don't think you get what i am saying. Your creativity you're referring to is nothing but "f*cking around". There is no meaningful characters, exploration, story, side quests, or anything that makes an open world game memorable and immersive. Its a shallow ass experience.

Other: Cyberpunk 2077.

Also, Halo: Infinite isn't really an Open-World as it makes out to be. It's more of a sandbox IMO.

The best one is probably X: Terran Conflict.

But I decided to vote for TOTK anyways. Could be nostalgia for the former.

What can I say, if I am gonna play an open world game, it better be a sandbox, not a themepark which would just have been better off as a linear game.

The good:

BotW is my pick, TotK is up there too but it doesn't have the flawless flow of BotW.

Mad Max for the world and the driving. I love desert and the post apocalyptic themes. Yeah the game isn't top tier but the whole atmosphere does it for me.

RdR2 could be a strong candidate if the story wasn't so half assed. But the world itself is close to perfect. I still pick 1 over 2 as a game. GTA5 also has an incredible world to explore.

Elden Ring might be slightly too big for it's own good but it's incredible still. I enjoyed the mini dungeons they were like cool 5 minutes long palate cleansers but it's true that so few try cool stuff.

Skyrim was just joyful exploration for me. Love the world/level design.

Morrowind for the atmosphere.

The bad:

TW3 is among best written game I've played, but I hate the world design. Just play the game and while free roaming look at the horizon and ask yourself what landscape feature calls for exploration and you'll find out that often the answer is none.

New Vegas broke my heart twice with it becoming unplayable so while I love it I can't pick it.

Oblivion, hated the texture work and the repeating patterns, killed the game for me.

I voted other: Grand Theft Auto III.

The ambulance, police and fire department missions put it over the top for me.

I loved Fallout New Vegas, I thought it was a 10/10 masterpiece but the mostly apocalyptic desert doesn’t do it for me.

@hardwenzen: No, you need for the game to show you what to do otherwise its boring. You have no creativity to use the tools the game gives you to create fun. That's what a game Iis all about FUN.

You simply don't understand that.

TotK.

The other ones are either boring or buggy. While I did enjoy Elden Ring, I hope their next Souls game isn't open world.

You enjoy braindead gameplay🤷‍♂️What kind of creativity in game that offers nothing than braindead gameplay can you really expect? Your definition of creativity is jumping on a gas tank, and use it as a rocket to fly. So original

Can you even enjoy a game with dialogue?

@hardwenzen: Nah, simply making a point that Open World games that emphasize the GAME part are better than forgettable themeparks. Of the games you listed it is the only one, aside from New Vegas and BotW, that I would consider a decent game.

The best open world games are the ones that make the open world the game itself. Games like the X series, Elite, Escape Velocity, Kenshi and more.

MGS5 has ace mechanics. But the open world dragged down the experience hard. If the whole games was just 5 or so Ground Zeroes bases it could have been a GOAT.

It is the most game of any game you listed aside from the Zeldas.

Some people just like it when video games are actual games. Literally nothing you mentioned adds anything to the mechanics or game part. Just themepark rides, to divert the attention away from the fact that games could have been done better linear.

Probably Gothic.

And I came to it really late (about 3 years back), having absolutely written it off prior.

Gothic 2 gets more praise, but the first one really sank its mits into me.

STALKER 1 if its count. its more of semi open world.

Far Cry 2 if we only talk about pure open world.

most underrated game of all time. get hated because because. its incredible immersive game, more so than newer movie FC games.

Its almost Ubisoft version of STALKER and done well.

The story and world is one of the best thing about RDR2.

Gameplay is bad. everything else is near perfect.

@Maroxad: You're wasting your time on lemwenzen. As you can see, he judges open world games by their story, characters, side quests etc. He doesn't understand what creativity or fun is. Best to just pity him.

Honestly my vote still goes to MGSV. incredible game gameplaywise. Sure the story sucks and idk why I need to replay missions in hard difficulty to finish the game but the gameplay itself is just sublime.

Skyrim, this is largely thanks to mods, the base game whilst good in its' own right would not have had the staying power it has had without mods.

Feels more like a world that exists without the player.

Is Subnautica considered open -world? That would be pretty high up there for me. Still, hard to beat Fallout 3 or RDR1.
