Poll Was the Xbox Series S a mistake by Microsoft in your opinion? (83 votes)

Yes 31%
No 69%
No Caption Provided

I see this thing getting discounted all the time. 2 years later, and it already feels like a last gen device. I think we’re entering a phase where games will be made for the next gen systems from scratch and a device like this is going to be severely lacking. Graphics wise, and plus, the 512gb memory is inadequate. I think MS should’ve focused more on showcasing the XSX. It’s clear that gamers want the latest and greatest graphics for their games. There will be less and less people that want an XSS, but since MS made a promise to support it, their first party games will be held back to support a lower tiered system.

What do you think, SW? Was the Xbox Series S a mistake by Microsoft in your opinion? I think so.

The main issue is that nobody wants 512gb in 2022. If Microsoft bumps it up a bit, then sales will climb. Plus there Series S is still competing against PS4, so once PS4 is discontinued, that will also help the S. And then there is a possibility that people want Blu-ray drive, so if Microsoft makes an S with Blu-ray, that can help too. Either way, the S is good for people who don’t care about having the best graphics.

Obviously not, the sales are massively in its favour. MS knew what they were doing considering the component shortages and increased price. They will be laughing all the way to the bank with people unable to afford anything else.

There’s massive amounts of people like hardwenzen who don’t have a big 4K screen to play on, and for gamers the xss bundled with Gamepass ultimate and sold as Xbox all access is a brilliant idea.

Not sure how anything that sells in the 10s of millions is a mistake in the normal world.

@sealionact: True, there’s plenty of people who don’t own 4K TVs and prefer to stick with the same 1080p TVs they are used to.

It's not a mistake many people still use 1080p monitors. I do think ms will release an X with no disc drive very soon.

@SolidGame_basic: The "mistake" is that Sony didn't release an "S" version of the PS5.

Please provide links of this great "XSS price discount".

They didn’t need an S version silly, they already had the PS4 which sold 117 million, more than double the Xbox One 😎 The S was an attempt to try to get in on early next gen sales, and now MS is forced to support it. There are plenty of sales on the XSS. Just yesterday there was one: https://slickdeals.net/f/15984586-512gb-microsoft-xbox-series-s-fortnite-rocket-league-bundle-250-free-shipping?src=SiteSearch

I have no idea what Series S have sold, so I can't answer that question. I would either need sales numbers, or be an idiot fanboy. But my guess is that no, it wasn't a mistake.

THAT'S the prime reason it was doing better. Because it was already getting a 50 dollar price cut. That thing was a slow starter once it hit shelves. MS has been doing nothing but burning cash with Xbox to keep up with Sony. It's hilarious

So, it's on sale. Oh, God, the horror. So, when there is a PS5 bundle of say... Horizon FW, Elden Ring, or Spider Man, for $550 - does that mean the PS5 is also "discounted"? You're saving $20. Or a bundle of a new PS5 and three $70 games for $599?

Just asking.

Besides the lack of storage, I like the Series S as it's small and even though it feels like a last gen system, I don't see the problem. If Microsoft just had the Series X, I would still be using my Xbox One.

People who obsess over tech specs spend all of their time worrying about nonsense. I have never bought a game console and worried about resolution, frame rate, etc. Just buy the thing and enjoy what you can play on it.

No. It does what it is supposed to do. It plays scaled down versions of Series X games. Some people do not care about the 4k hype and are good with 1080p or 1440p.

I haven't looked, but are you able to add external storage to the Series S? If so, the disk space available ton drive wouldn't matter.

And to be fair, I could survive on 512mb and just install/uninstall games as I go. Especially with the ability to download and install while in sleep mode.

Well I hope they’re good with 512p-720p too, cuz those resolutions are becoming more of a norm than an outlier. As is 30fps with 60+fps options not even being available. There are many PS4 Pro and Xbox One X games running at a higher resolution than the Series s. (with some graphical feature missing of course)

@Pedro: Oh, let me be clear. There are more 1080p games than sub 1080p games. There’s maybe more 720p games than 1440p games though.

When I said 512-720 was becoming more of a norm than outlier, I didn’t mean most of the games were running that way. I meant it was becoming more frequent than before. We are just seeing more games dip below 1080p as time the gen goes by. Something a certain faction told us not to worry about

No. The series S is a success. It is aimed mainly at the casual gamer who doesn't need lots of teraflops, raytracing etc. Personally, I strongly prefer the much more powerful series X, as I am an avid gamer, but that doesn't make the S a flop.

@mysticaldonut: Not really. When the price of SSDs goes down, the S will be 1TB and the X will be 2TB (without increasing console price). So there will still be differences between them.

Two years in and vast majority of games released from 3rd and 1st party are last gen games.

Not only is the Series S not a mistake, I'd say it is justified. What is the Series X and PS5 doing? YAY, last gen games in 1440p and 4K. "WOW, because we didn't have that with the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X".
