Like to see Hexen remade by Indefatigable (Amid Evil developer).
The original Heretic is unabashedly a Doom clone. It somewhat differentiates itself with a fantasy theme and an inventory system. But otherwise, it's a competent but run-of-the-mill clone.
Hexen: Beyond Heretic by comparison is significantly more ambitious. All the levels are interconnected with a hub, with the hub itself gradually opening up in reaction to the sublevels, like a spider-web untangling.
It also uses classes, where the player is limited in weapons, but each class changes play-style. Essentially melee/range/mix.
Where it fumbles is in that the "puzzles" are entirely a key-hunt. Flip switch on wall, with overly obtuse design and lack of visual indicators that quickly turns into frustration with a guide.
Also a problem where-by there isn't the enemy variety of something like the Doom series. Be seeing the same 4-5 enemies start to finish, with those enemies in a respawn loop.
Amid Evil gets compared to it, but it's closer to Heretic or Quake. It had a hub, but it's exactly copying Quakes where it just acts as a gate-way rather than the more sophisticated nature of Hexen.
