Nintendo consoles are usually pioneering, and loaded to the brim with generation defining games and exclusives. However, one Nintendo console has to reign supreme- the question is, which one is that?

As we enter a new era of Nintendo consoles with the upcoming Nintendo NX, slated to launch next year, I figured this was going to be a good time to look back on 30 years and 6 machines- and decide which of them is truly considered to be the best.

SNES

Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, Super Mario RPG, A Link to the Past, Donkey Kong Country, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, Castlevania IV, Secret of Mana, Earthbound, Street Fighter 2, Star Fox, F-Zero, TMNT Turles in Time, Mega Man X, Tactics Ogre, Battletoads, Double Dragon, Final Fight 3, etc.

And it also featured BY FAR the best controller Nintendo ever made.

Anyways, Gamecube holds my fondest memories. I vote for that.

SNES was when they really got it. Before the crappy gimmicks and the over reliance on mascots.

I had a SNES, but never enough games (or essential games rather) to fully enjoy it's decadence. Gamecube on the other hand I was able to afford games myself and play a lot more of the essential titles. Therefore, it is my favorite Nintendo console. I love pretty much all of them though.

The Wii.

It can literally play the entire Nintendo library from NES to Wii, including handhelds, with little to no effort.

Yep, it's also asked more or less a thousand times with every poll being the same.

EDIT: It's pretty much akin to asking "which is the better James Bond game" and adding "Goldeneye" to the poll. Results are going to be obvious.

It has to be the original NES. That's what I had growing up. The Gamecube comes second. Actually, the NES was probably the only console that Nintendo got 100% right. The ones that came after were kinda gimped with stupid design decisions. The SNES has a severely small audio buffer that hurt its capable fidelity. The N64 still used tiny cartridges as the world used CD's. The Gamecube did not utilize full size DVDs. And the Wii... lost its charm after the first two minuets.

I still like them as a company... at least they're taking risks per each generation. Unlike some other parties... *cough* Sony *cough*... that are still using the exact same controller layout AND SHAPE for two decades now.

It's always SNES, for obvious reasons. Best combo of price, power, varied and strong game library, great 1st and 3rd party support, and mix of awesome sequels plus new IPs.

People won't accept that. Wii emulation is maybe the best I've used. Not 100 percent though.

...

All of the systems have their positives and negatives.

The most well rounded release is probably the NES as far as classics and genre coverage. SNES is great. Lacks great shooters. Pocky and Rocky. Rtype3. There's a few, but nothing that compares to what was on Genesis. Even the nes covers this area better. N64 is some kind of enigma. It perhaps has the largest amount of classic 3d games. The good stuff on the N64 is astounding. Shame the library was so small. The console is still home to the best games in quite a few genres.

It's the only Nintendo branded console that can play that many Nintendo games.

If you want "accurate emulation" then the only obvious answer is PC.

Like? Not gonna argue, just curious. I miss the Mario 64/Banjo style 3D platformers, and will always adore Zelda, but struggle to think of anything else that could still be the best after all these years. Sin and Punishment or Ogre Battle maybe?

Eh, even that has issues, and I think the wii emulation is better in ways.

I would say SNES as it was the era where Nintendo could not fail. They were consistently exceeding expectations in every conceivable way. The same can't be said for 3rd party though--the bad stuff on the snes is really rough, especially the poor audio. I don't know why I'm telling you this. lol.

Lets make it simpler and just say every nintendo console is the best. Gamecube was a kickass console--easily the best from that era. There are some gamecube games which were light years ahead of the competition.

Yeah, if we're not counting backwards compatibility and emulation, then it's easily the SNES for me.

I voted N64. The only Ninty home consoles Ive owned are the N64, Wii, and WiiU. The obvious choice is the SNES, but I was a genesis kid so I cant vote that in good conscience.

-Mario 64

-Banjo/Conker (I'd classify them differently than Mario 64)

-Wave Race

-Ocarina/Majora's Mask

-Fzero X (Yes, GX is amazing as well but the games are very different are they not?)

-Starfox 64 (personally prefer the original)

-Ogre Battle

-Pilotwings (why has this not been improved upon?)

-Blast Corps

-Sin and Punishment.

-Bangai-o

-Goldeneye

...I'll stop, because it will start bleeding into opinion. There are aspects of Mario Kart 64 that are better than the new ones. I like that it is less forgiving. There's a greater risk/reward. I'd even say this is true with many games on the console. After this era things started becoming a little easier because the market really exploded.

What makes N64 so unique is that there are games which are great and for some odd reason the genre died out. I've been on a Genesis/Nintendo 64 binge lately. Wave Race is a true classic. Just thinking that the game is 20 years old and plays better than anything out now--its crazy.

Gotcha, there's definitely some crazy stuff that has no modern counterpart. I do love me some Pilotwings, haven't thought about or played that game in at least a decade (sighs at being "old" :P)

For stuff like Wave Race and F Zero, I find their Gamecube sequels easily better and as for Goldeneye, I find it unplayable today. Framerate, controls and AI feel like a broken game. However, I also find virtually every NES game broken and unplayable today, so perhaps I just lack the "proper" appreciation for older games as time goes on.

I don't have that problem with SNES/Megadrive games though, it must be said. They remain classic to me.

Whenever I play a friend's N64 it's laggy and the controls kinda suck compared to probably every other nintendo system.

Wii cant compete with Gamecube's number of quality titles.

Wii U still needs time to be able to compete.

NES, never played it.

Thus it's down to Gamecube/SNES.

Ultimately voted for Gamecube, amazing classic games that I still play today (of course you can say the same with the SNES [anyone purchase chrono trigger for android, does it work?]).

I think Gamecube/SNES are clearly the top 2.

Blue Storm is good, but not quite on the level of the original. My reason for this is the boost. In Blue Storm there is a boost. In 64 cutting the time relied more on carefully timed presses of the B button, which could also affect turns. I know this game more than I should!

For many years I bought into the whole "goldeneye" doesn't hold up well. I think I just became so accustomed to twin stick controls. When I got my N64 back I was rather surprised I even questioned how great the game is. Mission structure, difficulty curve, even controls. The game is very open. There isn't much else like it. If you've got a 64 I urge you to give it at least until you pick the controls back up--just use C for forward/back/strafe and the analog stick for aim.

F Zero....not sure which I prefer or think is better. Might be the exception where the GC is better.

And I cannot believe you find every NES game broken. IMO it is maybe the console with the least amount of broken games and the most classics.
