For me, on any given day, it's either Silent Hill 1 or 3. 3 has my favorite character of all time, Heather, but 1 is just so profoundly surreal, and I reeeeeeeally dig that.
What about chu guyz?

@lundy86_4: Know what you mean about FF7. That was my first true rpg experience. Was super young (like little kid), had no idea what I was doing. Ended up getting to final Sephiroth at like some ridiculously low level, 30 or something, then just got destroyed, with no backup save points, as I didn't even grasp that concept yet. Not even sure how I pulled that off, lol. But made me super nostalgic for the game.
Too many great games to just have one at the top but I’ll always have a special place for Chrono Trigger so I’ll go with that.
Man that’s a tough one, Skate 3 is great for its replayability and always trying new stuff it’s hard to get bored of, but the Ratchet and Clank games always give me a good time replaying every few years as well, but that’s partially from nostalgia.
It's an impossible question, but Silent Hill wouldn't be in my top 1000 let alone number 1.
Lol, you couldn't help yourself. Just had to take a crack.
By playtime, its GW1, and its not is even close. Nostalgia wise, its always Perfect Dark. The game that felt very special when i played it is Demon's Souls in early 2010. All three are amazing games, so whatever.
For single player, I would probably say StarCraft, closely followed by Diablo 2. I love the game, the art, the characters, the music, the armies (40k-adjacent), the vibe, the cinematics, all of it.
For multiplayer, Halo CE. We would have 16 people every Sunday, playing from noon to midnight, for years. If you've never been in the position of holding the enemies flag, while they have your team's flag as well, frantically scanning for any movement that could lose you the game, then you haven't lived. Then your team kills their flag carrier, returns the flag, and you make your move to the base, hoping the enemy team is waiting in your base. This time, they aren't. You capture the game winning flag, and the cheers and jeers erupt. Easily one of the best feelings life has to offer.
I could also say Galaga. Every time I walk buy a cabinet, it's hard not to play. The funny thing is, I used to own one, and almost never played it. 🤷♂️ But if it's out in the wild, I can't help myself.
Honestly, I stopped trying to figure that out, because every time that question is asked, I have to think real hard about it, and each time I would get a different answer, or give up without an answer at all.
That being said, while the shortlist and answer is different each time, one thing is always the same: the very first name on my shortlist is always System Shock 2. Maybe that's enough?
@nod_calypse: You seem to be bending over backwards for some sort of win.
Just a heads up, there's is no right or wrong answer, but just people's preferences. And because we're on a forum you shouldn't get offended when someone thinks differently of your opinion.
Have a nice day 🙂
@last_lap: Ah, I see.
So, what determines that it is an average game?
Again, don't strain yourself, dude.
I have a few.
Sonic CD
NFL Blitz 2000
Nier Automata
Mario Kart Double Dash
Titanfall
Then there’s bad games that are great.
Sonic R
Sewer Shark
WCW/NWO Revenge
Demolition Man (3DO)

I don't see you playing a game like Nier. Sorry, but you're not fooling anyone.
Halflife.
This.
I was a playing games before Half-Life, but HL is what turned me into a gamer.
On its own, HL is one of the great first-person games ever created.
But it also introduced me to:
No other game has had a greater impact on my life. And that's just Half-Life 1! HL 2 (plus episodes) and HL Alyx continued this trend.
People give Valve a lot of shit, but if all we get is one HL game every 10 years (on average), I'm OK with that.

I LOVED Nier Automata. I raved about it plenty on this board.
impossible question when you've been gaming so long but in terms of playtime / replayability combined with enjoyment that ive got out of games, these stand out over the decades
secret of monkey island 1 & 2
streetfighter 2
super mario kart
super mario world
half life
thief 2
gta 3 / vice city
half life 2 + expansions
crysis
dishonored 1 & 2
demon's souls
elden ring
Its pretty much a tie, and I know some people will have a hard time understanding this...
I think MGS4 is subjectively better than TLOU, but TLOU is objectively better than MGS4.
MGS4 is my favourite game of all time, TLOU is the best game of all time. Even though I'll place MGS4 as #1, I never have and never will recommend anyone and everyone to play it. (at least not irl anyway)
My top 3 would be:
Was OoT for 2 decades until I played Half Life: Alyx. That's a gaming experience I will never forget and highlighted to me that a well developed VR title will comfortably be a better experience than any flatscreen one. With the UEVR mod I've been playing a lot of my favourite flatscreen titles in VR and it's quite a transformative gaming experience.
Had the biggest emotional attachment to tlou remember getting it on my PS3 and never experienced anything like it.
Super Metroid years before and SMB3.
So many great games released over the years, hard to pick. Just recently I have to say Dead Space Remake. Can’t pick just one.
I'd have to break it down by genre.
Beat'em Up: Final Fight or God of War 3
Action Adventure: Uncharted 2
Tactical/Stealth/Espionage : Metal Gear Solid 2 Son's of Liberty
Platformer: Blinx the Time Sweeper
Fighting: Street Fighter Alpha 2 (Saturn version) or Capcom vs SNK 2
Racing: Virtua Racing (Sega 32X) or Project Gotham Racing
Shooter: Virtua Cop or Panzer Dragoon II Zewi (Saturn)
FPS: Time Splitters or Halo CE
3rd Person Shooter: Day's Gone
Action RPG: Demon's Souls (PS3 version)
Turn based JRPG: Final Fantasy XII or Digital Devil Saga (entire series)
CRPG: Divinity Original Sin 2
Puzzle: Tetris
.
*Any genre not covered I don't play or don't care for*
Halo Infinite.
:P
lol :P
Well, IP hated on me for liking Silent Hill, so I understand the feeling, lol
I like to have 3 categories,
Most fun per hour: Portal 1/Majoras Mask.
In these games I remember practically every single room layout. And when I wasnt sleepy, I was smiling from start to finish (regrettably the first time I played Portal 1, I was really sleepy which soured my experience)
Most overall fun: Rimworld
I can return to this game over and over, it never gets old.
Best impact: Ring Fit Adventure
Introduced me to fitness, which in turn helped me enjoy Portal 1 since I was no longer constantly sleepy, as well as made me fitter, happier and healthier overall, massively improved my quality of life
Hmm planescape torment or Baldurs gate 1 would probably be my go to answer! That being said Monkey island 1 and Half life 1 is definitely also some of the best games ever!
