https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/exclusive-xbox-cvp-kareem-choudhry-is-leaving-microsoft-amid-a-large-xbox-leadership-shake-up

What you need to know

  • Xbox CVP Kareem Choudhry is leaving Microsoft as of today.
  • Choudhry worked on some of Microsoft's most cutting-edge gaming tech, from Xbox Cloud Gaming to its recent AI efforts.
  • Choudhry's exit precedes a wider Xbox leadership re-org, with some team members promoted, and new staff incoming.
  • The wider leadership shake-up is designed to streamline processes and help Microsoft accelerate plans for growth for Xbox Game Pass, Xbox hardware, and beyond.
  • Windows Central understands that Kareem's exit was amicable and coincidental, and not part of the wider re-org.

...

After 26 years of Microsoft tenure, our sources indicate that Kareem Choudhry is exiting the company. Choudhry might be known best to Xbox fans for the quote "it eats monsters for breakfast," in reference to theXbox Series X, and "it's a monster" in reference to the Xbox One X. Indeed, Kareem was responsible for working on some of Microsoft's most cutting-edge projects, including developing the Xbox backwards compatibility layer,Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Microsoft's new gaming AI division, known internally as XEmTech or Xbox's Emerging Tech team. Today is Choudhry's last day at Microsoft, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The "eats monsters for breakfast" guy is out a day or so after MS announce it's 4th 30fps title on its console. There that should get some jimmies rustled.

Never heard of him, and have no idea what CVP means 🤣

But since this news has been posted by a cow, I'm sure it's concerning in some way, I just haven't figured it out yet 🤔

@davillain: I don’t care if you’re a moderator, you’re wrong for actively participating in the console warring nonsense and if DToast has any sense, he’d put a stop to this nonsense like what happened over on GameFAQs. 🥱

@agent_stroud: Dude, I have no knowledge to what's going on GameFAQS and even back in the old days, I had no idea Gamespot & GameFAQS were sister sites to begin with. Hell, I'm not even a mod on that site. (Thank goodness for that)

Learned something new every day. Truth be told, this whole thing is just a big pile of meh if you ask me. Kareem Choudhry leaving MS is hardly a loss.

Fair dues to him for the BC stuff. Credit where it's due: MS does that very well. Sorting out the Xbox to Xbox 360 stuff back in the day must have been a complete pain in the ass.

A shame we have yet to see anything from the AI stuff. Maybe it's more internal tooling for developers? Or more B2B focused?

Anywho best of luck to him.

Finally. Thing is, it too you so long that the resell value is equal to a family meal from mcdonalds, so don't think for a single second that you were smart waiting this much.

And welcome to Sony's Playstation family.

The console isn't difficult to develop for, the api has a heavier overhead than PlayStations. It's DX12 that needs the work.

But it's true. Giving developers more resources isn't that useful either. The more they have, the less they optimise, especially with the costs of developing. It's human nature.

I don't think the Series S has severe limitations, I think the games were never designed with the resources it has. Like Baldur's Gate 3 was designed for the PC with tons of RAM, and then they squeezed it onto consoles after the fact. I highly doubt the game wouldn't have worked on the Series S if it was built with more efficient memory techniques in mind. Especially when you consider what developers were pulling off on 7th gen consoles with less than 512MB of RAM.

It's mind blowing to consider a game like Perfect Dark on the N64 for example. You're never going to have that much of a highly optimised game again on a console.

Imagine half these developers of today faced with the PS3, PS2, N64, Sega Saturn or NES. They'd quit the industry for sure. Half Life on the PS2, Half Life 2 and Doom 3 on the Original Xbox. Now THAT'S talent. They weren't simple ports, they were more or less built from the ground up.

Can you link to the API having a heavier overhead than PlayStation? My understanding of DX12 is not the overhead but the change in the way data is managed and processed.

Unfortunately I can't remember where I heard it. I'm pretty sure some developer said it or something. While like all low level apis DX12 does have a low overhead, I just heard that PSs is lower, which is why the performance can often be a bit better. I'll try and find something for future use though.

After reading some of this thread: https://forum.beyond3d.com/threads/digital-foundry-article-technical-discussion-2023.63146/page-32

There's a lot, in retrospect I think it's more complex than simply saying "overhead". That's an over simplification. What seems for sure is that DX12 hasn't matured as fast as it needs to.

@HalcyonScarlet: DX12 uses a more modern approach for rendering thus, the slow adoption to the process despite it being around for over a decade. Devs tend to stick with what works and are slow to change like everything else.
