Damn, that's a pretty big difference. If you want best bang for your buck, sounds like consoles are a good way to go next gen. Of course if you want all of the fancy smancy tech and ultra settings and don't care about money, then PC will get you that. But for the money, the next gen consoles are pretty competitive with PC now. Wouldn't you agree, SW? Are Herms about to get rekt?

@sealionact: it should be, yes - the next gen hardware is ~high end for current gpus, but will be midrange for next gen gpus, which will likely mean a 2-300 price drop

But even then - you're still looking at a much more expensive build. I don't know why some people live in delusion on the price disparity. It costs more. That's ok.

Now is a really really bad time to try and build a PC that will hold up well for the next 6+ years. it usually is just before a console launch.

Even later this year there will be improvements in terms of better CPUs and GPUs available for the same money along with better SSDs and such like.

There are also unknowns. For example: on paper an 8 core/16 thread current CPU with higher clocks on the PC should be well able to cover anything the consoles can muster up. However Both the PS5 and XSX have specialised processors to deal with decompressing data. MS and sony have mentioned that it takes several ryzen cores to carry out the same workload. So whats going to happen on the PC side? will devs be able to implement similar systems to get even more out of SSDs on the PC? will it actually take several ryzen cores to do it? will they just be uncompressed on the PC, putting more of a strain on the backend? will it actually just be a non issue? we don't currently know. so trying to cover off those bases will be expensive.

Seriously (and i say this mainly as a PC gamer), if you want to build a PC that will hold up well over time, now is a REALLY REALLY bad time to do it. the future proof game is always tricky but at the moment it's really tricky.

@osan0: When did Microsoft and Sony ever mention it would take "several Ryzen cores" just to decompress like their consoles?

I've always spent around 1000eur on my PC.

That includes everything, but mostly doesn't include a keyboard, mouse and monitor. You don't buy a new TV everytime you buy a console either.

To me consoles are still more expensive. Their games are more expensive and they require you to buy subscriptions to access half of your games.

Oh and then there is Nintendo, who is in a whole different league of overcharging for their games, accessoires and shitty online services;

I can't find where MS mentioned it. It was a passing remark during their XSX teardown in 1 video.

What?

I built one last year and couldn't be happier.

Finally moved away from HDDs and went SSDs exclusively.

Moved from an i7 4790k to a i7 9700K (which was the best gaming CPU around in every single benchmark bar none, until the 10 series). Played every game that was CPU bottlenecked much, much better.

Also bought faster RAM along with it.

Kept my old GTX1080ti.

Paying MSRP for parts that are being discontinued and replaced in the next 2 months is foolish. You built yours a last year, not 1 month before a bunch of new hardware is being released.

I'm assuming the guy in the YouTube video doesn't actually know what he's doing because you can build a brand new PC capable of maxing out any game that will be released over the next couple of years for less than $1100. If you shop smart, you could probably get it done for less than half of that (assuming, of course, that you already have external peripherals like monitor, keyboard, mouse, and speakers).

But most PC gamers don't build a brand new PC from scratch every few years. Rather, they upgrade individual components. In my case, I recently bought a new graphics card for around $200, which is the most I've spent on a PC upgrade in several years, and now I have a machine that went from struggling to run newer games to one that can easily run any game on the market. Meanwhile, console gamers are looking at $500+ to "upgrade" their systems.

Hell a ryzen 3600 6 core 12 thread cpu would honestly out perform xbox series x or ps5's ryzen 3000 8 core 16 thread cpu's running @ 3.6/3.5 ghz due to clock it running @ higher core speed the 3600 boost to 4.2 ghz.

Not to mention sony and microsoft always dedicate 1 or 2 cores to running the consoles operating system so in reality the consoles are only dealing with 3.5/3.6 ghz ryzen 3600 which on the pc side runs @ 4.2 ghz.

Eh trust me you'll beable to build a pc that pisses all over ps5/xbox series x by the time they release for 600/700 dollars.

Not to mention ryzen 4000 series chips will make ryzen 3000 series chips drop in price also.

Why do consoles cost more than roku or amazon firesticks? Because they do more than just ''netflix'', no different than pc lol why do trucks cost more than cars? because they do more lol.Pc's arent much more expensive than consoles these days tho.

You're only paying 100-200 dollars more than you would a console plus you can DO MORE.

Consoles become less and less relevant every generation and more pc like every generation also you might aswell buy a pc.

When i got into pc gaming in the 90s 800 dollars was the sweet spot, now 600-800 is the sweet spot i got into console gaming with the atari2600 and stayed pc gaming and console gaming untill ps3/360 then i just gave up consoles they're no longer relevant to me for the most part none of the exclusive games interest me anymore and they're just been becoming more and more pc like since sega saturn and dreamcast, but now they're lacking interesting exclusives it's even worse lol.

Was trying to get my best friend to get a gaming pc, he's just console only reason i might get an xbox series x is to maybe play with him on there, but that's be the only real reason none of the exclusives interest me on ps5/xbox series x tho and me buying xbox series x is just a ''maybe''.Dunno if i will honestly buy one hell or him yet.

Oh, that yeah. Kraken can do 800MB/s per thread or 1350MB/s with two threads which for some reason he didn't mention so it's more like 4-5 cores instead of 9. 9 cores would be true if it were a single thread as demonstrated with this image;

If the PC is much more powerful than the consoles how come you get some terrible PC versions of the multiplat games.

I seem to remember a lot of consternation over a Batman game which was terrible and worse than the consoles versions.

Being more powerful does not prevent software companies shovelling out will-this-do rubbish now does it? It is not just us console users that suffer from this.

I'm not taking consoles into account at all. I'm talking about value for your money. You can spend $700 today and get a 2080S or you can wait until Sept. and get a far better Ampere GPU for that same $700. That way you won't feel like you wasted your money when a $350 Ampere is now outperforming that 2080S you just spent $700 on. Tons of new tech is releasing Q3 and the existing market will be getting price cuts as well.

@Juub1990: So i wonder how that will be dealt with on the PC side? will the PC build of a game use it (or something similar)? Does an even stronger CPU need to be factored in (12+ cores)? will there just be more of an SSD bandwidth brute force approach taken (i.e. no new compression)?

its just a bit all up in the air at the moment. if, today, i was speccing out a PC that i didn't want to upgrade again for 5+ years then that's a big red flag.

lol this is just speculation and why not wait after they are release to actually compare builds. There were literally comparison this gen where current gen console didn't even perform better than pc with similar specs during the early years.

Whoa, you mean the next gen of consoles will be better price/performance than PC when they launch?

Shocking. This has never happened before.
