That sucks. I never hunted before, but it holds a prominent rank in my wishlist in case I ever make it to a place where hunting is a thing.

Say @br0kenrabbit, what do you use for hunting? seeing how you're all for manliness and all, I hope it's not a shotgun. I'm aching to hunt with a cross and bow. Also, how does venison taste compared with beef or other common meats? its dark red is enticing. It looks so lean too, which is a big plus in my book, as I despise animal fat.

Depends on the season and what I'm hunting. I bow-hunt turkey because the other option is bird shot, which means picking a lot of little pellets out.

Deer I hunt with a 30-06. I have hunted deer with a bow before, but there is so little margin for error. You really only have one target area with the bow: in the chest behind the forelegs. Anywhere else and not only will you be chasing the deer, but it's not going to be a pleasant experience for the deer. They won't even bleed out quickly because the arrow plugs the wound.

30-06 though, the deer might jump but it hits the ground right after.

As for the taste, it's gamey. Umm...not so sweet as what most people are used to in red meat...I'd describe it as slightly mushroomy-walnutty. Just slightly. But it also depends on the deer and its diet. The flavor isn't as consistent as store-bought beef or chicken or whatever.

It's also less tender, because those are wondering muscles, not standing around in a field muscles.

This may sound cruel to some people, but I wouldn't be that concerned about the deer's experience; after all, he's dead anyway. I wouldn't want to put an animal through unnecessary suffering, sure, but my hunting experience would take precedence here. To me, hunting needs to be as primitive as one can afford; otherwise, the experience is lacking. That's why I wouldn't have a problem chasing the deer for some time, but for how long is debatable.

I'm always tight on money; that's why most of what red meat I consume isn't premium cut. But after having tried both enough times, I realized that I prefer less tender meat, as it's more flavorful while also being less fatty.

I'm flabbergasted; I had no idea the Republican primaries are harboring such a prudent and judicious candidate. In fact, this is the first time I hear substantive arguments and policy positions from a Republican candidate. Of course it doesn't take a genius to realize he has no chance of winning the nomination.

I particularly loved the way he disregarded Trump and his attempts to throw him off his game. It takes courage and true strength to maintain composure facing an unprincipled, shameless lout in front of whom other Republican candidates have been dropping like flies.

@GazaAli: yum that looks great!

There was a show on PBS a while back called Mind of a Chef. Great show! Anyway in the first season they follow one chef named David (?) Chang, who is obsessed with Japanese food and Ramen. They spend an episode or two solely on ramen.

Ramen broth and noodles

The whole episode is great, but skip to 11:44

Bookmarked!

The poll is too restrictive. It was a mixed bag mainly of meh and sux, but with a few glorious moments that wouldn't let me choose sux.

Overall, it was a productive year, and I'm thankful for that. I continued to build my momentum and to prime myself for what I have in mind. I'm content. Besides, I don't view my life in terms of years but as a continuous stream, which is why I don't even take notice of the end of the year, let alone take it seriously.

I thought the term terrorism has lost most meaning to all by now. First it was reserved for brown, bearded men living in the desert, but then it's been abused and slapped around by anyone wishing to demonize a group of people. I reckon, however, that there are quite a few "traditionalists" that remain faithful to the original bias; nevertheless, they contribute to the corrosion of the term by waiving it on their deserving own.

I'm always jelly of Asian cuisine, Japanese in particular, and I try to copy it as much as I can. Needless to say, the result isn't always satisfactory; the cuisine is way too exotic to find the proper ingredients and equipments for here in Gaza.

for me it is the technique. Japanese food, ingredient-wise, is pretty minimal, but the technique is so hard. Have you ever seen how they make broth for ramen?! INSANE!

Can't say I have, but after having enjoyed Japanology's bento episode, I'm saving the ramen episode for later.

But you make a solid point. A while back, having watched the kare raisu episode, I thought I'd try my luck and make my own, as it seemed a simple enough dish to make. I looked up a recipe and all the ingredients were available. Then I got to the actual recipe, and I was enraged by how elaborate it is. It's not that I couldn't follow it, but it's so complex that it defeats the whole purpose of the dish as a comfy winter food. If you don't have the prepackaged roux available, don't bother.

Speaking of ramen, I made this for dinner the other day:

Nothing too fancy, but it was still great. I usually add vegetables, but I was too lazy that night.
