I understand that a 640x480 camera is a poor choice for such a task. Think about it, its 2 bugs, in a swarm, at 640x480. Or, you can have a 1080p camera with higher frame rates, and a higher quality sensor and glass in front, capturing significantly more information.

At a resolution of 640x480, you would need quite a magnified lens to see actions that the human eye cannot see. And I dont believe the kinect has a decently magnified lens if it has to be used in a livingroom setting for 2 people at once.

Digital cameras from the turn of the century had 6 megapixel sensors, thats effectively just over 2800x2100. Here is an example of what you will see with kinect, get a picture of locust from a metre away, resize the picture to be 640x480, and then tell me what the heck is going on.

Little confused here, they are using a crappy 640x480 camera to study insects? Why dont they use a superior webcam if they wanted to be cheap about it? It doesnt even explain how kinect, in any way, is benefiting the research other than the idea of 'we have crappy low res footage of a bug eating another bug a few metres away'.
