You might compare this to Brexit, but I'll go back further, to the prelude to Brexit, the warning sign no one listened; the European Parliament elections. Pundits and the media have for years wondered why people in places like the UK, France and the Netherlands kept electing fringe groups like UKIP, FN and PVV to the European Parliament.
This is the key thing Ive been pointing out to people. Ever since the economic crash, this attitude has been a thing and has never gone away and the only way its been addressed is by middle class going around calling them racists and idiots while they dont have to deal with the same issues. Fast forward and the people who are affected most about this dont want the current establishment and wont listen to people more educated tell them that it wont work out as they hope because as far as they are concerned, theyve been left behind and the debate isnt representing them or their issues fairly so they are doing whatever they can to force a change, knowing that they dont really know how good or bad it will be but the fact that it will be different holds a lot of value for people who feel like they have to take a risk to make their lives better.
Also, everyone likes to put down the areas that voted Trump as just racist idiots... stop acting like these people all magically became racist/sexist etc the minute their feet touched the ground. Maybe the fact that those attitudes should be acknowledged as the proof that theyve been left behind and need to be brought forward to the modern values with support in infrastructure and education and not used as a way to isolate them further by just branding them as "deplorables" and leave at that because its convenient because that only makes it worse
