Poll Do you spend a lot of time on the character creator? (45 votes)

Yup 29%
Nope 71%

I can't enjoy a game with a character creator if my character isn't looking 10/10. Every single game, i spend at least 40 minutes in the character creator, and very often over an hour. Its a disease and i can't do anything about it.

Minimum a week before I can finally get to the playing part.

And even then, I once got a Skyrim character to level 30+, 100 hours into the play-through, only to suddenly thought; "her eyeshadows are too dark, her nose is all wrong, and I don't really like the hair." Immediately deleted the character and started over.

It varies. Sometimes I’ll spend time fine tuning the details, other times I’ll just go with whatever preset I like the best.

That’s always the first hour of a game that offers that to me.

Not really. I get impatient when there's more robust character creator options and I do not want to spend 30 minutes just creating a character.

Sometimes, but usually those games are really long to begin with that time seems negligible by comparison. Usually meaty RPGs and I probably spend a lot more time looking at gear and skills when I level up.

Kinda prefer Infinity Engine type games where you can use a portrait.

Can make goofy ass teams where everyone pretends it's normal.

I either make my characters look like me or one of my sons. Then I name them as such.

My friend, having a custom created model doesn't mean they, the world and every other character do not have a backstory.

That's cookie.

theres never been a game with character cusomization having good character.

lazy concept. hipsters love RPGs. because "OMG dialogues trees. so deeep"

Rather have Max payne and Mafia. deep character written having backstory.

This bothers me. One of the things like about MMOs, you can attach stats to other armor to style how you like.

If you want to wear a wooden pale on your head for 99% of the game, should let you.

Agreed. I'm playing Fenyx rising at the moment and that's something the game does well. You can equip gear with any stat and also make it look like any other bit of gear you collected (or *shudder* bought with real money).

Still it's not something I focus on much in games.

You do understand the fact not every game needs a well written character with a backstory like Kratos, right? Not every game is about the main character🤦‍♂️

Imma have to agree with ghosts here... Not a fan of character creation in single-player RPGs.

I don't mind it in multiplayer games, like MMOs or wrestling games, but I've never liked it in single-player RPGs.

I honestly don’t spend more than 3mins on it, I just go off one of the default characters and make some quick minor adjustments if I want but I don’t go in depth with it, I just want to get to playing the game. Some features developers allow you to adjust seem overkill to me but I get a lot of other people look for that kind of customization. Picking genitals in BG3 was just ridiculous, I’m hoping they did that as a PR stunt for more attention in which case it obviously worked.

Oh yes. I go crazy on that shit. I like to personalize characters/worlds as much as possible, so I really take my time. If a game has a robust character creator, I usually spend the first session just doing that. I could be at it for hours getting my character(s) just right.

Depends on the game. In games more focused on roleplaying I tend to take it more seriously, in other games, such as Street Fighter 6, where the emphasis is on punching. I tend to go through it quickly so I can get to the meat of the game.

Depends.

In City of Heroes/Villains, that is pretty much what your character would look like for the entire game. So yeah, I spent some time and made it look cool.

For Demon's Souls, I spent a decent amount of time, but then spent 95% the time in my undead form, looking like a zombie. Or I had a helmet on, that covered up all that effort. So on Dark Souls I just maxed out all the sliders, and looked like a walking bee allergy.

One general preference I have with character creators is when they emphasize diversity over detail.

6 sliders for my eyebrows is all well and good, but all the sliders in the world won't make a difference when I can't actually branch out from a general aesthetic all that much.

Dragon's Dogma 1 offered plenty of diversity along with detail.

The problem arises when games like Lost Ark severely limits your options, so that even though you have plenty of detail, everyone will still mostly look the same. Want your artist to be an old man? Too bad. Your artist, no matter what you do, is going to look something like this.

Iirc, Black Desert Online had a similar problem, the character creation in that was really detailed, but in the end, you really couldn't do much with it. The difference between characters within the same class were pretty small.

Sometimes, but usually go with "this looks ok" and be fine with that. Usually only create a character in action RPGs, and those run around with a helmet on all the time anyway. Would I play BG3, I'd probably sit and create my character for an hour or something to make him look like me.

It completely depend on how good the custom creator is. Baldur's Gate 3 is the GOAT of character creation so I probably have like 8-10 hours creating all these gorgeous players.
