Who is surprised? He's peddling conspiracies like Joe S. murdering his intern from 15 years ago. He also spearheaded birtherism, which is THE conspiracy that identifies it's supporters as brain rotted morons.
Let's take a count of our favorite forum Trump supporters if they back this kind of rhetoric. My guess is you'll see the same canned responses.

I wouldn't classify it as stupid, but rather, dangerous. He purposefully propagates conspiracies and slanders anyone he sees fit. That's a bit more problematic than simple gaffs.
