Poll Do you prefer turn based or action based RPG combat? (54 votes)

Turn based 57%
Action based 43%

I will say, when a turn based game is done right, like in Octopath Traveler 2, it's awesome. I think Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth also had some great ideas with turn based combat. On the other hand, it could feel great to hack n slash and feel the action. FF16, tho flawed in some ways, was a cool vision for how an RPG could be, even tho some people will say it's an action game. I think some could also argue that Elden Ring is an action RPG, which I think is true. So there's definitely great examples of both turn based and action based RPGS. Which one do you prefer, SW?

I enjoyed turn based games as a kid a bit. As I grew up the thought of sitting by and waiting for my enemies to get their turn to hit me is asinine. It’s trash.

Then there is opportunities to improve the execution. No?

They have. Its full action combat

Yeah I prefer full action combat as well but I'll play turn based games.

I play turn based when I'm not trying to be too zoned in. Can literally walk away mid battle doesn't matter. Turnbased is more strategic planning. Full action is more reaction based being in the live moment.

Some turn based games mix in reaction based elements, paper mario, sea of stars, ect.. but it's still not as fullfilling as just in the moment full action imo

I appreciate developers mixing both styles, xenoblade, mass effect, fallout

Why is this thread "bumped" as it was last active at least a month ago?

Traditionally I prefer turn based, but I also enjoy action if done correctly. Games like DMC and FFVII Rebirth though? No... not even close... not even slightly close.. Games like Elder Scrolls, Dragons Dogma, Granblue Fantasy Relink, Outward, Kingdom Come Deliverance, and many others akin to those? Hell yeah. I pick both, but give a slight edge to turn based overall even though WRPGs have done very well with me in recent years. Still since there isn't a third option for those of us on the fence that enjoy both about equally in their own ways leaves me no choice other than a no vote and to complain or agree either way as I see fit. 😜

I like both about equally. What's more important is how well it's done and then how good the world and characters are.

I like both. I prefer my stat-heavy RPGs to be turn based, a the lighter stuff more action-based. Think Baulders Gate vs Y's or Mana.

Different type of game.

Hell I'm still down for some good old text-based Wizardy.
