https://blog.playstation.com/2023/10/05/sony-pictures-core-formerly-bravia-core-launches-on-ps5-and-ps4-consoles-exclusive-benefits-including-early-access-to-select-sony-pictures-films/

Our friends at Sony Pictures Entertainment produce a lot of fantastic films, and today, I’m pleased to tell you about our new collaboration to provide the PlayStation community with access to some of these memorable movies on PS5 and PS4 consoles.

You may be familiar with the Bravia Core app, which is a great way to access a wide range of recent and classic films from Sony Pictures on Bravia TVs and select Xperia devices. Bravia Core will be rebranded to Sony Pictures Core on these devices next year, and starting today, we’re launching the Sony Pictures Core app on PS5 and PS4 consoles.

Once you sign up* for Sony Pictures Core on your PS4 or PS5, you will be able to buy or rent up to 2,000 movies** straight from your console. At launch, this will include blockbuster hits** such as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Uncharted, The Equalizer, No Hard Feelings, Bullet Train, and Ghostbusters: Afterlife, among others.

Sony Pictures Core is available starting today for PlayStation players in 23 markets globally. You can find the Sony Pictures Core app in the Media section on PS5 and on the PS Store for PS4.

We hope you’ll enjoy Sony Pictures Core and all the films that will be accessible through the app. It’s part of our shared goal with Sony Pictures Entertainment to bring together this curated collection of wonderful films to elevate the PlayStation experience. This is just the beginning, and we plan to evolve the offerings and benefits of Sony Pictures Core over time – including a selection of hit anime content from Crunchyroll. We’re looking forward to more exciting things to come, so stay tuned!

If you’re a PlayStation Plus Premium/Deluxe member, you’ll get access to a curated catalog of up to 100 movies***** through the Sony Pictures Core app to stream on demand from the Sony Pictures library as part of your membership. The catalog, which will be ad-free and updated periodically, features movies such as Looper, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, Elysium, and Resident Evil Damnation.** There will also be additional benefits for all PlayStation Plus members, so stay tuned for more details.

Wowza, what a cool benefit! Thoughts, SW?

That's actually really interesting for us videophiles.

If I am remember correctly, Bravia Core movies are streamed at 100Mb/s. Its essentially 4K movies at the same quality of physical 4K discs.

For context: a Netflix 4K movie/show is 15Mb/s. Their 1080p shows are 5Mbit/s.

Some of our local Norwegian stream sites use as little as 7-8Mbit/s for 4K.

iTunes is famous for having the best streaming quality at 4K, but they usually hover around 20-25Mb/s.

Compared to physical media:

1080p blu ray is 30-40Mb/s

4K blu ray is 80-130Mb/s

Get Disney plus and it's a deal lol.

Seriously though, definitely a value add but I'm not sure if it moves the needle in terms of making people want to subscribe.

you sure they stream at 100mb/s ? that needs a gigabit connection, and **** if psn gives me 15mb/s on a good day

Cool for those interested, but it isn't for me. I personally would rather have the previous price structure and have this be its own thing. It is just no added value for me as I do not watch many movies, nor do I care to start. This won't get me to resubscribe, that is for sure. First party on day 1, that would get me back in. Or once their catalogue of PS5 1st party games is large enough on the service, maybe I will jump back in.

This is nice, but I personallt would rather have more games on my game service.

If I wanted movies, I'd just get netflix.

Not a bad benefit, still not gonna change back to Premium. At least with the price increase they added value. Too many price increases from all the different subscription platforms and I hardly use them to justify keeping them. Had to cut them loose!

This doesn't sound right. You sure about that?

Edit: Very briefly looked and they do recommend 43mb/s to use it. Sounds like if you have the speed available by your provider, they actually do stream as high as BD. Impressive.

"In fact, to access the highest quality, you'll need a minimum internet speed of 115Mbps."

My bitrates are way worse. Netflix lowered EU bitrates during the pandemic, and never put them back up to standard.

Wow, I'd certainly want to check this out. Though the library might be redundant from the plethora of streaming services I have access to, will be nice to check out the quality of the streams, and at no extra cost since I already have a Premium subscription.

This is an app from where you can buy or rent Sony movies? Is there any particular reason it isn’t available to everybody…or am I misunderstanding something?

The bitrate/quality stuff is the only thing interesting here to me. It always grinds my gears seeing people with 4K TVs streaming their movies in “4K.” Shit looks like a 480p DVD…

Why? There's many folks out there with 4K OLED TVs and good speakers watching sub-1080p movies with 2.1 audio because of these awful streaming bitrates. I've shown folks side by side streaming vs UHD disc and the difference is clear. And then the audio quality difference is on a different level than that.

What's the point of having a nice TV when you stream all your content? Might as well stick to 1080p TVs and just use the TV speakers...
