Eager to go back to it later today. So far it's really good.
Well I figured out why my DLSS isn't working. Gamepass version is trash. I shouldn't be surprised at this point. Bought it on Steam, no issues since.
Omg, the PC version on Game Pass is horrible.
As others mentioned, the DLSS is absent but it also stutters like crazy.
I'm running a 3090 and 5900x. Game shouldn't be stuttering this much WITHOUT RTX
What could be the cause?
No idea. I've tried both DX11 and 12, tried lowering settings (which I shouldn't have to since I'm averaging 80-90fps at 4k), also tried running in windowed mode. Nothing works.
I'll probably just wait on a few patches, no need to buy it when it's on Game Pass lol
Regarding the stuttering, changing the dx version to 12 ( and turning on ray tracing) seems to work for me, wasn’t a huge issue before though!
Played 2 hours or so, and seems pretty solid! No idea why gs would rate this 6/10 tbh, won’t revolutionize anything but seems like a solid 7,5/10 here! And it’s a 25$ title or free on Gs…
The more I play the more I like it. There's so much to do, and I strongly suggest doing side quests to level up a bit before charging through the main game.
Here's a legit review of the game:
@navyguy21: that's weird - I didn't really have performance issues on my 2070S at 75Hz 1440p with RT on. The only one I noted was huge stutter periodically when entering new rooms, as if the game wasn't doing a good job streaming assets from a new area before they are actually needed, causing the framerate to lurch for a sec.

After researching online, I may have to do a fresh install of the Nvidia driver. Most of my stuttering came when there was some kind of special effect, usually tied to explosions, grenade, or boss attack. Hopefully it also fixes the little micro stutters when moving into new areas
@shadyacshuns: I'm one of those people that likes to do all the side quests anyway and iv been having trouble reaching areas where the side quests are telling me to go to. I decided to progress a bit in the game and come back to them and after doing so I had the same problem reaching still inaccessible areas. Putting those side quests in at a stage of the game where they aren't even reachable seems a bit of a daft thing to do.

Yeah, that's a level 2 quest for the 'roids up in an area that isn't accessible until you progress through the story a bit. That quest really screwed me over early on too. Somebody didn't think that one through.
I think that the combat in this game, with the cover system and the height variations, is really fantastic but yeah, the world/mission structure is very weird. Still I don't feel like that's a major problem, just awkward.
Still having trouble understanding the difficulty complaints in the GS review my only possible explanation is if the reviewer played the game like a traditional twin shooter instead of using the game's systems. But oh well, I honestly enjoying the game so far.
housemarque has been making indie titles for ps4 for years.
outland, reso gun, alien nation, matter fall, nex machine
all look like indie titles to me.
this was there first big third person title.
the other games scored well to.
they been 2nd party as well until lately were sony bought them very recently.
im sure Microsoft funded ascent as well. companies usually fund second party as well.
If the game is funded and published by Sony, it is not an indie title. Returnal was both. Indie titles don't have a look, contrary to popular belief. Any game can be an indie title. What makes a game indie is how it was funded. Indie games are games independently made without a publisher.
The Ascent is not the first big third person title. Where did you manufacture that claim?
Do you have proof that Microsoft funded The Ascent or are you making stuff up?
Even Ori is not indie because it was funded and published by MS but folks still incorrectly call it indie.
Ryse Son of Rome is an indie title.
Ryse was funded and published by MS. The PC port was also published by Deep Silver IIRC.
I guess I’m past half way now. I’m really enjoying myself. It’s a fantastic game, a 8.5/10 for me, it’s my type of game!
But it’s not perfect. The map system is bad, it really needs a mini-map.
I wish there was some sort of hover-board or faster way to travel or a faster sprint since there is a fair bit of backtracking.
It would be nice if there was some sort of random enemy generation because they reappear at the same spots.
But it’s a 12-person team, the shooting mechanics are excellent, the graphics are so good they hurt my eyes, the music is also great.
Man it's glitchy, but damn if it isn't fun. Most issues I have get resolved by restarting game. A couple side missions I think it keeps sending me to wrong place so might need to research work around. But did a couple hours of co-op today and holy hell, so much more fun that way. Firefights are even more chaotic and beautifully destructive. Hopefully some more patching will be happening soon. But just playing what the game is now, no regrets putting time into it.
The more I play the more I tend to agree with the 6/10.
Looks great and there is some fun to be had, but monotonous backtracking and some rough difficulty spikes here and there, along with random crashing really hamper the experience.
It's certainly no Alienation.
I honestly hated Alienation lol

Honestly there's so much going on, I don't see how the One X can even run it at all. This game was made for high end PCs and the Series consoles. Sucks the One X can't handle it properly, was looking forward to co opping with ya.
@Ballroompirate: Impossibru! :P
@shadyacshuns: We can Co op. You're probably going to hate waiting for my long load times though.
The X1X runs well mostly, and it looks really nice. Just every once in a while when fast traveling or getting in one of the long elevator rides it kicks me out to the Xbox front end menu. Hopefully it's stuff that can be ironed out with a patch.
I'll holla at you when I finish the campaign. Maybe they'll put down some stabilization patches by then.
Watched both SkillUp & ACG's video review on this game. I picked this up on Steam...looking forward to playing it soon, looks solid from what I've seen.
Been playing this weekend and I'm loving the game. graphics, sound and gameplay are all fantastic.
Gamespot scuffed their review on this one. How did this get a 6 and Medium get a 9???? I would have rated them the opposite.
Probably the worst review from gamespot this year imo. This is a fantastic stick shooter. I want to go as far as saying best stick shooter I've ever played.

It must be, they didn't enable ray tracing on the Series because it's too much
There's no HDR in the game either on Series X, but that's ok because it looks great as is.
It's on Game Pass so I will see for myself. Still excited to play it myself.
That's the best part of GamePass, I'm definitely trying this out, but I wouldn't spend 60 dollars on it.
It is $30.
that's not bad, 20 would be better
Watched some gameplay, it looks very bland, very 0815 indie. Feels like certain (sub)genres are not progressing at all. The animation on itself... Helldivers (2015) has proven, player characters dont have to move like an abonimable mannequin in iso. Sick of it.
This muhfucker gets hard as crap midway through if you're playing solo. And some more side quest fuckery exists as well. I've had a couple glitches here and there that I've never seen in a game before. On one load in I was moving around the maps and no enemies spawned, and then tonight in a play session I had like a million enemies spawning every few yards over and over, like total chaos. Time for some patches.
With the group of you gamers playing The Ascent how would you rate it up to now? I downloaded it on my XSX this morning and haven’t tried it yet? Still do you think it’s a 6/10, better or worse? I’d like opinions please! I’m going to try it when I’m finished work.

7.5/10 possibly 8
I am enjoying it personally.
I played quite a bit of the game this weekend. I'm around level 20 (not sure what the cap is... maybe 30?)
Definitely think the reviews have been on the harsh end of things. I've had a great time with it. I'd say it'd be a easy 8/10 without the bugs and performance issues.
I managed to mostly fix the stuttering with the gamepass version by going through this
https://www.reddit.com/r/theascent/comments/ouc0s0/stuttering_fix_for_dx12_tested_and_working/
The reason it stutters on gamepass is that apparently its stuck in DX12 mode which has stability issues, whereas the steam version doesn't have that problem (which is really annoying). RTX/DLSS is also broken on the gamepass version.
Other than that, I've had a bug where the game doesn't exit properly (pressing "quit to main menu" does nothing). but thats about it. No quest bugs or crashes or save files getting deleted (playing solo).
Probably in my top 3 games this year alongside Valheim and It Takes Two, granted its been a really weak year so far. If you want to play this on Gamepass its probably worth waiting a month for some patches.

8/10 for me. The back tracking and grind doesn't bother me as I enjoy all the sites and sounds so much.
