Of course he is a clown. He is a console gamer who is complaining about frame rate. How are we supposed to take any of these clowns seriously unless they are PC gamers? If you truly care about the hobby and quality, you play on PC. Everything else just isn't good enough. At least AJ plays on PC.

I'm done with console gaming promising 60fps.

First it was PS4 pro, that didn't last very long, I think there were like 3 games that offered 60fps, one of which was TLOU which was a remaster of a PS3 game.

Then it was this current gen with both PS5 and Xbox Series X promising 60fps. And I know for damn sure it's not the CPU as my CPU's (both 4 core 8 threads and 8 core 8 threads ones) had been doing 120fps without a sweat.

And again here we are a few years later: Outcast and Rise of the Ronin offer performance modes on console and they're not even good. They're straight up bad. Horizon FW 60fps mode had serious graphical issues on launch, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth 60fps mode has serious graphical issues on launch.

Meanwhile the list of 30fps only games keeps growing and growing:

  • Redfall
  • Gotham Knights
  • Starfield
  • Hellblade 2

I'm not ok with this. It feels like a scam. I specifically bought into this gen because they promised 60fps.

__

Totally unrelated but did you see the revival for Battlefield V this week? It was pretty glorious, was even playing some Grand Ops again yesterday :-)

@R4gn4r0k: Well, they are cheap consoles with old tech that gets more outdated with each passing year. Games like Hellblade 2 are using demanding features on advanced game engines. Of course the consoles will struggle. The hardware is ill suited for the task. If you want the advanced graphics and performance at the same time, you go PC.

BFV is still the best. :)

Being that I am a cow, I really should just wait for Uncle Phil to port this to our PS5 Pro.

Baffles as to why these pro consoles are so geared towards resolution over frame rate. We need a pro with a better CPU.

Nothing is really pushing the CPU, 4K resolutions are handled almost entirely on the GPU.

It feels a lot of people are jumping on a train without realising the number 1 issue these days is lack of optimization.

Even if the PS6 had a 16 core CPU with 32 threads it would still default to 30fps two years later.

The first game played in VR is one of my favourite gaming experiences. Hopefully this will be playable in VR as well but either way I'm looking forward to it.

@R4gn4r0k: Yeah but that's only because devs will keep on pushing for visuals.

PS3 gen: HD > 60 fps

PS4 gen: Full HD > 60 fps

PS5 gen: native 4K > 60 fps | 1440p with ray tracing > 60 fps

PS6 gen: Path tracing > 30 fps.

Believe me the PS6 when it releases in 2027 should have no trouble running the PS6 titles in 4K/120, but knowing the industry they will push to have path traced unreal engine 6 games on a console that costs less than 1/3 of a flagship PC GPU alone.

the $2000 RTX 6090 will eat up Unreal Engine 6, 4K, 120 and path tracing no problem but but the PS6 will only be able to do that at 30 fps.

I'd much rather have pre baked lighting and 120 fps rather than per-pixel based perfectly traced lighting and shadows with only 30 fps...

@Mozelleple112: The evolutions in graphics have been kind of insane come to think of it:

Not only did graphics increase from PS2 to X360, but we also got a nice bump in resolution up to 720P

Then a gen later, graphics keep increasing, but so do pixels: 1080p.

1440p and recronstruction up to 4K with games that still look AMAZING today (Ghost of Tsushima and TLOU 2) on PS4 pro

And yeah now this, again graphics keep improving as well as resolutions increasing (in the best case scenario, because in the worst case they are decreasing).

Oh well, it's like two evolutions happening at once. And with ray tracing perhaps even 3 evolutions at once.

@R4gn4r0k: Exactly... So sadly consoles are always going to focus on 30-60fps. when 4K UE5 games are easy to run we'll want path tracing and UE6 games.

When the PS7 releases we will want UE7 games with path tracing *AND* 8K etc. etc.

But have you read all the comments on various media (YouTube, TikTok, IG, Reddit, etc.)? A lot of the general gaming consensus is that 30 fps is perfectly fine for single player games while 60 fps is only needed for multiplayer.

Lol. Devs are never going to push for 120+ fps...

Resolutions have at least reached a plateau. People aren't chasing 8K. They realize 4K is good enough and upscaling/reconstruction techniques can work good with higher resolutions. I think RT/path tracing has been the killer of this gen in terms of performance. The consoles were not prepared to take on that workload. The good thing is that games can scale. So, if they are pushing fidelity on consoles at 30fps, PC gamers benefit with better hardware that can run it at 60fps or higher with increased fidelity.

I look forward to the discrepancy between the earlier preview and the review. It should be entertaining.😏

a common thing now sadly.

I concur. Previews being overly positive has been a common thing for so long now. For all we know they show the best part of a game and the rest of the game is just dull as dishwater, we have no way of knowing.

I still remember Far Cry 6 previews being overly positive, and then I tried that game and it was unplayable, only became playable through a ton of modding and tweaking making it closer to previous Far Cry entries.

At the same time, the few instances where previews have been negative (Skull & Bones, SuSquad) is something publishers will look at and probably take the wrong lessons from so it doesn't happen anymore (being more restrictive what gets shown, who gets access, and what gets talked about).

A sad trend indeed.

i had early access on skull. shock on how buggy it was.

did not get early access to susquad thing.

real path tracing wont be a thing for gaming for a long time. if you have to use upscaling in any form.

patch tracing (legit stuff not cheating low lvl garbage that game dev use)

render frames per hour... for a reason. on render farms... for a very good reseason.

fy what ever reason this finale reply back... very very strange.

@firedrakes: When I say path tracing I mean the kind we have today in Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2. I believe some of the RTX remakes (Portal, Prelude, HL2, Quake 2, Minecraft.) Also have path tracing but I am not sure.

I realise that Hollywood/Disney/Pixar has a whole different kind of path tracing with probably dozens more bounces per pixel or something that means even 10,000 RTX 4090s working together wouldn't be able to run it in real time.

But that's like PS9 stuff. When the PS6 releases devs will probably push the CP2077/AW2 type of path tracing. Which sucks. I'd rather just have baked lighting and HFR lol.

surprisingly enjoyed the first one so looking forward to seeing how the sequel turns out..

i really appreciate that they are laser focused on their vision for the game.. they could have easily tacked-on a bunch of stuff to bloat the playtime but they seem to want to do a tight experience that is in line with what was accomplished with the original..

good on them.. i hope it's well received..

People were delusional to think this would be a 60fps gen. I said years ago. Consoles are sold on graphics. There's no way they weren't going to halve the frame rate to increase graphical output.

But I don't care that much for a game like this tbh.

@BassMan: That's true.

I remember imaging PS6 gen was going to focus on 8K, PS7 would focus on 16K, PS8 on 32K, PS9 on 64K etc.

I wonder if we ever will get a "final resolution" but yeah.

I can't imagine who would take 8K/60fps over 4K/240fps lol. be it on a 4090 or 5090.

In the future we'll see 16K/30fps vs 4K/480fps on the 6090/7090.

What is your opinion on ray-tracing and the more advanced path tracing?

I leave it on on CP2077 and AW2 cause I fee like "that's the point" but in general I absolutely do not think PT with 70fps is a better gaming experience than rasterised gameplay at 144fps.

I think HFW maxed out 4K/170 fps > AW2 maxed out at 4K/80fps. > CP2077 maxed out at 4K/70fps.

I love ray/path tracing as long as you can comfortably run it at a high frame rate. If not, I would recommend people turn it off. For single player games, especially third person where you typically use a controller, you don't need 100fps+ for precision aiming and fluidity. So, I will happily turn RT/PT as long as I get around 70fps or more. For first person games, I always like to play at a higher frame rate. So, I played CP2077 on my 3080 with RT OFF on my first play through to keep high fps. Now I play with full path tracing on my 4090 with DLSS Quality, frame gen, and can play at 3440x1440/100fps+. Good times! :)

“The preview encode is fortunately high enough quality that we can make out individual pixel edges in a few moments, with results coming in between 1296p and 1440p or thereabouts, though with the letterboxing effect, it's more like 2304x964 to 2560x1070.”

I'm liking what I see.

First game was very much more art than game, and there is room for that in the world, but naturally the gameplay elements suffered: shallow combat, specifically.

I'm liking that they're building off the success of the original and making it more of a game game while appearing to stay true to the original concept of the original game (focus on mental health, hallucinations, etc.).

And, as always, I recommend people check out the development diaries for the orignal Hellblade because they were really fascinating to watch from a variety of perspectives.

Dont mind 30fps if it's stable I've become more of a fidelity gamer as this gen has been a bit disappointing so far.

Disappointing in gameplay, and that every game wants to be the same live service game, right?

Because when it comes to graphics I think the fidelity, and the fluidity of graphics this gen are unsurpassed.

Xbox should have the mode 120hrz at 40fps like Sony does to there games. Both company's should push that. Best way to play in my opinion.

Best welfare way, yea. With all the hype from Cerny/Sony for so long before the launch of the ps5, a system with 60fps/4k on the box, i am supposed to accept 40fps at 640-1440p?
