Death Stranding have been played by 16 million people

Announced during a livestream by Kojima Production just few hours ago.

Definitely not a flop and Kojima said it may be nearer to 17 million by now. I personally loved DS1 but its definitely a divisive game. Hope KojiPro able to make improvements in DS2 from lessons learnt in DS!

Wasn't it free on ps+ and possibly epic? This "played by X amount" is just fluff to obfuscate the real number of sales, while also giving you an impressive amount just so people believe its very successful. This is all Microsoft has been doing, and it lead them to fire everyone at 343i, and now go full third party🤣

So yea, when i see the Played By, i think of a developer that doesn't have anything impressive to say, but wants to be noticed, so they bring you an illusion of success🤷‍♂️and Microsoft is the perfect example of that.

Gonna start up another playthrough, one of these days, in anticipation of the sequel.

@freedomfreak: been thinking about doing NG+ myself. There something about rebuilding roads and connecting ziplines just so engaging I could spend hours doing that.

Fun fact: More people have played Death Stranding than any Metal Gear game.

That's actually really sad. I believe MGS4 sold 6-7 million copies.

I beat it last weekend. Flippin game ended like 8 times before it ended.

It was like 2 hours or so for me lmao I was trapped at that beach for ages. Not to mention after the whole revelation regarding Die-hardman and Fragile Express reestablishment you still got another ending to go through for BB. This game is so weird yet I fking love it.

I'm one of those 16 million. Bought the PS5 Director's Cut. Very much enjoyed it and am really looking forward to the upcoming sequel.

I saw the BB stuff coming half way through. The Die-hardman scene was pure cinema. But damn it I just wanted the game to end already lol. It's a decent game though and gets much better when you start unlocking real weapons and vehicles.

This is the one game that I look at and say, "part of me wants to play you, but a bigger part of me knows I'm gonna have my time completely trampled on with mindless drivel..."

Forza Horizon 5 has been played by over 40 million people and they say racing games are niche. Kojima hasn't even reached niche level yet, still on Indies level 🤣🤣🤣

The game is on freaking anything and everything apart from Xbox. It's even on iPhone and Macs and yet all they had to say was played by. That's all you need to know that the game haven't sold anywhere close to the numbers of the usual MGS games. No wonder Kojima is back to announcing that he will going to make a MG like game again.

But how many people actually beat it? Can we check global achievements? I tapped out after... Oh, Epic client doesn't track hours.

Did it take you awhile to get into it? I stopped playing fairly early, considering on trying it again.

I mean.. that's cool and all until you realize it has dropped for free or on many services. Sales say more than people that have played.

Played it on PS4 day one and even replayed it on PC as well. I for one like it, the world itself is as creepy as Kojima himself. I'll start on my 3rd play whenever Death Stranding 2 gets closer to its released date.

I'll also add that it's a slow burn game, but once you unlock more equipment like the bike and stuff, the game really pick up. I too was intrigued what Kojima was cooking after he left Konami.

Its one of the best selling new IP of last gen, topped Steam Charts on release, profitable for KojiPro and it was PC publisher 505 Games highest revenue game of 2020.

His next game better have a ton of combat. Having weapons in a game with barely anything to shoot at is a stupid af game design.

@sakaixx: Yeah, I'm not denying the game sold well regardless, but over a third of those numbers aren't from people who bought the game. Still big numbers, but not as big as that number would suggest.

The last confirmed sales figure was 5 million units, shortly before they announced 10 million players. If they're at 16 million players now, then the sales are probably around 6-8 million. That would put it in the same ball park as the best-selling MGS games.

Death Stranding received the most GOTY picks that year:

2019 GAME OF THE YEAR

1. Death Stranding - 80
2. Resident Evil 2 - 79

However, it was Sekiro that won the most prestigious GOTY award from The Game Awards. That's basically the gaming equivalent to the Oscars. So ultimately, Sekiro was the real GOTY winner that year.

6 hours into the game and the only thing I learned is how to walk.....the story hadn't even become interesting and all that you pretty much do is walk. Only reason I even tried the game was because I got it free on Epic. Glad I didn't pay money for it.

So, is Death Stranding a "chill" game? I played for a couple hours and it seemed pretty intense but I'm just wondering if that was just some story building and stuff.

Basically, what I'm asking is: is this a game I can play with a podcast playing in the background? I've heard so many people call it a boring delivery sim and that kind of sounds fun when I need to relax.

Right now I'm playing Snowrunner which basically has me delivering logs through the frozen tundra in a big truck going 2 mph and it's fun for me lol.

On-topic: Congratulations to Death Stranding! It certainly an interesting game and people seem to be very split on it, but the quality seems good and it's certainly artistic and interesting, so I'm all in favor of it being successful!
